Transmigrating from a zombie world to become the mecha kings wife-Chapter 667: A governor with a duke as a personal guard.
Chapter 667: A governor with a duke as a personal guard.
Adler watched her leave and he turned to Tion. "Thank you for telling her that you would stay on. I know you don’t mean it but it could keep her calm for a while."
"I am staying, or real." Tion assured him.
Adler gave the other a look that said stop being ridiculous. "You are a duke in waiting. A duke cannot be a personal guard."
"Is there a law which says I cannot be one?" he responded.
Adler raised his brows for a few seconds and he just looked at Tion, hefty confusion in his gaze. There was no such law, that much was true but a duke working as a personal guard for anyone, even for someone as powerful as the emperor himself would be ridiculous.
"There is no law but..."
Tion raised his hands and said with absolute confidence. "Case closed."
Adler then snorted. Tion was even using Scarlet’s way of settling an argument. But, just because someone said case closed did not mean that it was actually closed or that they had won the argument.
"You might be just as insane as my sister." he told Tion.
Tion shrugged at that. "Take it as me protecting the rest of the empire from her. Your sister, my lady, our governor is a loose canon. She acts without thinking sometimes, like when she blows up stuff.
Or when she decides to go trapezing to another planet at a seconds notice.
Let’s not forget all the nobles she has berated, stared down, called foolish or offended in many different ways. But, she has a heart for the commoners and she is always thinking of ways to make their lives better.
She is not charging a fee for the herbs which are used in the medicine to treat the darkness. She has built multiple orphanages around the empire and she personally funds them.
She has made sure that nobody ends up homeless on the Blue star and that nobles do not randomly criminalize commoners here. She has done a lot of good and she will do more.
I am proud to keep her alive and well as she continues on that mission."
Adler nodded and he agreed with most of what Tion was saying but the crux of the issue remained. He was a duke in waiting, a position that many would kill for. When the news broke that he planned to remain as Scarlet’s guards the nobles would lose their minds.
All the dukes in the empire would riot before the emperor. Tion’s choice of employment was akin to a slap on their faces and an insult to their positions.
He put a hand on Tion’s arm and said in a serious vice, "You need to think about this properly. Maybe you are being sentimental...."
Tion shook his head and jumped in. "She gave me a home and a second chance. What kind of man would I be if I abandoned her at such a time especially. We both know that she is not necessarily crying because she is afraid to lose me specifically. She is afraid to lose another person because the general is still lost out there.
I will not abandon her, now or ever. My duty will always be to protect her unless she fires me. As long as my Lora is okay with it, then I am okay with it. The opinions of the nobles which worry you are of no concern to me.
Which one of them extended a helping hand to me and my brother when we had nothing?"
Adler couldn’t argue with that. None of the nobles had helped Tion. In fact, many of them had mocked him after his downfall.
"A guest is at the door." the voice of the AI announced.
Adler stepped away from Tion and he opened the door. He was expecting his father because he had called their mother. When he did open the door, it was not just Dorian which did not surprise him. Their mother and Fey had come with him.
"Where is she?" Mega pushed him out of the way. Hastily she walked into the house while asking questions. "How bad is it? Has she broken anything? Has she said anything to you at all?"
She looked from side to side and looked at Adler impatiently.
"She has locked herself in her room. I don’t think she wants to see anyone."
Mega turned on her heels and headed straight in the direction of Scarlet’s bedroom.
"Aren’t you supposed to be in the hospital right now?" Adler jogged after her asking curiously. Even though he was the one that informed her about Scarlet, he had assumed that she would first deal with the planned extraction of the baby in her womb before coming over.
"The procedure is for tonight. Don’t you read your messages?" Dorian responded in place of Mega.
Mega was already pounding heavily on Scarlet’s door which was unnecessary since a simple knock would work.
"Scarlet, baby, open up. It’s mommy." she called out and she continued pounding her fist on the door as if it had personally offended her.
Standing to her right, Adler winced. "Mother, you might scare her if you keep hitting the door like that. "You have a call from whiny princess Carolyn." his bracelet AI alerted him.
He didn’t step away but answered the call from where he was.
He barely got in a hello when Carolyn loudly said, "She is finally crying. What happened? Has she heard from Esong?"
"How do you know already?" he asked her.
"I told her." Mega replied.
"Mother told me." Carolyn too said, at the same time. "So what happened? What finally made her snap?"
Adler got another call. "Hang on, Beord is calling." he told Carolyn. Then, he added Beord to the video call. Just like Carolyn, Beord impatiently started questioning him immediately.
"Hey, how bad is it? What do I need to do? Lanta and I are on our way."
Adler looked at their mother and pointed to Beord’s hologram. "Also you?"
"I told everyone in the family group chat. They have all been worried about her." Mega explained. Then, she went back to pounding on the door.
Worried, Dorian caught her hand and said softly. "Honey, slowly. I can break down the door if necessary so don’t strain yourself."
"Nobody is breaking down any doors." Adler told them.
Fey poked her head around Adler and she made a suggestion. "Maybe we should just let her rest and cry it out. Do we have to make her come out and talk about it? right now."
Undeterred from her mission, Mega continued knocking albeit gently. "Yes. My baby is hurting right now so I need to comfort her. I do the same for all of you when you cry, don’t I?"
Fey accepted that their mother did this. But she also didn’t think that it was the immediate solution to everyone’s pain. Sometimes, someone just needed to cry on their own without people saying everything would be okay when it wasn’t. Empty words and promises were not always comforting.
"It doesn’t mean we don’t like crying in private sometimes mother. I am not saying that don’t comfort her. What I am saying is that we can wait for her to come out. You have four hours until your doctor’s appointment. Let’s sit and wait. If we keep pushing then she might push us away further and become even more distant than she has been lately."
