Transmigration: From Farmer To Empress-Chapter 2023 - 2031: Marrying Off My Son, Second Watch (3)
Firstly, it’s because the elders in the County Town have always trusted the old brand of Huìyánzhāi. Secondly, the rouge Yanran produces is made from top-quality flowers and herbs, which makes the cost much higher than the rouge casually made by others. As a result, ever since it has been for sale, there has been no interest. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺
Yanran is very concerned about this. She personally approaches customers to introduce and sell the products, but to no avail. Everyone is set on the old brand of Huìyánzhāi, and it’s indeed quite difficult to make them accept rouge that costs several times more than the original, the effects of which are unknown.
One day, while Yanran was tallying accounts at the counter, a very impressive horse carriage stopped in front of Wényàn Pavilion. A well-dressed young woman stepped down as the carriage curtain was lifted. She appeared to be around thirty years old. Her attire, though not as sophisticated as the ladies from the Capital, was elegant, made of high-quality double-sided embroidered silk with a horse face skirt in lake blue, accompanied by a maid. She seemed to be the mistress of a wealthy family in the County Town.
The young woman was pretty with delicate features. Her face was not flawless, but there were no significant blemishes. Her complexion was fair and smooth, without any visible flaws.
"Madam, please, our shop has new blush, copper blush, various fragrance creams, hair oil, and other items. May I ask what Madam would like to purchase?"
The young woman covered her mouth with a handkerchief and coughed lightly, casting a quick glance at the shopkeeper without speaking, but her face turned red first.
It’s just buying rouge powder. It’s not something shameful, so why the shyness?
Adhering to the principle that no customers should be let go, Yanran approached the young woman with a smile and said, "What would Madam like? Why not accompany me upstairs for a cup of tea, and we can talk slowly."
"Yes, indeed. Our store has some new products made from fresh seasonal flowers and herbs, far superior to goods from other stores. Such an elegant beauty as yourself should be using them. We don’t even recommend them to just anybody," the shopkeeper chimed in sweetly on Yanran’s side.
Women cannot resist flattering words, and upon hearing this, the young woman was intrigued and followed Yanran upstairs for tea.
As they sat together, Yanran suddenly caught a strong, pungent scent. It startled her slightly. It’s not unusual for a lady to wear perfume, but this young woman’s body fragrance was overpoweringly strong to the point of being odd, like spoiled food in summer.
The two of them began to chat in the elegant room on the second floor.
Unexpectedly, this young woman was actually Madam Ge, the magistrate’s wife from Nong’an County.
The magistrate’s wife shopping the streets with only a maid in tow? Yanran found it even stranger.
Seeing no one else around, Madam Ge softly confided, "To be honest, I’m here today to buy fragrance dew for the body."
Fragrance dew? It’s not anything that rare. Why is Madam Ge hesitating and looking so embarrassed? What kind of fragrance dew does she want?
Seeing Yanran’s puzzled expression, Madam Ge’s cheeks flushed red to her neck as she exchanged a glance with her maid beside her, revealing an awkward personal matter: "I suffer from fox’s odor, a condition that hasn’t been treated for many years. I’ve always used fragrant dew under my arms. It used to be manageable, but in the past two years, the condition worsened, and ordinary fragrance sprays can’t suppress it. I came to see if there was something suitable, but..."
Yanran came to a realization. No wonder she detected such a strong scent from Madam Ge. Presumably, the spices used to mask the body odor were very potent. This is actually a misconception; the issue with the underarm is often due to obstructions in the sweat glands. Strong fragrances can ironically produce a peculiar smell, uncomfortable for those close by.
Seeing her exquisite appearance but recognizing that no one is perfect and having such an unspeakable personal hidden disease, Yanran thought for a moment and said, "In that case, Madam might as well try the peach blossom cold incense powder."
Most of the fragrances Madam Ge used were strong scents like rose. Hearing about peach blossom, she frowned, "The peach blossom scent is mild; can it work..."
Yanran explained, "Strong scents are effective for a short time. Over time, the smell spreads, turning into a sour, odd scent. It’s better to use subtlety to overcome. Peach blossom cold incense powder is a powder; Madam can apply a little with a soft sheep wool brush on the affected area each time, leaving it dry and clean. Unlike regular fragrant dew, which can leave an oily residue under the arms, creating unsightly marks and inhibiting sweat release."
Though still skeptical, Madam Ge had no other remedies. This condition was genuinely annoying; once severe, she couldn’t even attend banquets, having to endure others’ uncomfortable expressions when speaking to her, a kind of embarrassment others couldn’t understand.
Alas, better to try it, she thought. After expressing gratitude, she instructed her maid to settle the bill at the counter. Yanran suddenly asked, "The cold incense powder only treats the symptoms. Have you considered curing the root cause, Madam?"
"Easier said than done. Of course, I’ve thought about it. Madam has also bought some wind-dispelling and sweat-repelling, fragrant and filth-avoiding medicines from the pharmacy—oral, applied, washed, all tried, but to no avail," the little maid beside Madam Ge interjected.
Yanran said, "I do have a personal ancient formula here, called dark fragrance pill, for internal use. After taking it for fifteen days according to the formula, it starts to show some effect. Depending on the severity of the condition, there will be varying degrees of improvement after more than thirty days. I wonder if Madam would like to try, though it will take about a day’s work to make."
Madam Ge was taken aback. Could this girl’s formula work when even the doctors in the Medical Center couldn’t cure this ailment? Moreover, if it can be made in just a day, there shouldn’t be any precious medicinal materials involved, yet she clung to a glimmer of hope: "Then I’ll trouble the girl. I’ll send my maid to collect it the day after tomorrow in the late morning."
