Chapter 100: Adopt.

At night in Jiachen estate, Fu Mingze held Yang Meiyi in his arms as they both lay on the bed.

He kissed her forehead and asked, "Should I follow you to get the test result?"

Yang Meiyi smiled and shook her head saying "There is no need, I will just collect it on my way to the resort. I’m sure there is nothing wrong."

Fu Mingze brought her closer to him and said "You have to tell me what it says."

Yang Meiyi chuckled "Yes, I will." She used her fingers to play with his chest and suddenly placed her hand on his beating chest.

It has somehow become a routine for her. Before they sleep she loves feeling the strong beat of his heart because it is a sign that he is getting better, a sign that his heart is still beating fast and strong.

"Meiyi." Fu Mingze called out in the silent room.

"Hmmm." Yang Meiyi replied as she was feeling sleepy.

"Let’s.... let’s adopt a child."

Every trace of sleep left Yang Meiyi’s eyes when she heard Fu Mingze’s words, she looked at him as she asked "Adopt? But why? I don’t mind giving birth to a child."

Fu Mingze had a conflicted look for a moment before his eyes became indifferent as he said "I just don’t want a child of my blood at the moment."

"But that doesn’t make sense, you don’t want to have a child of your blood yet you want to adopt?"

"Yes, Meiyi because if it was up to me I wouldn’t even have a child at all." Fu Mingze spoke out coldly.

"What?" Yang Meiyi asked finally sitting upright.

Fu Mingze sighed and sat upright as well, holding her hand, he said: "I wanted to tell you this before but your enthusiasm for having a child has always stopped me from doing so and that’s why I thought of a better way for the two of us to be satisfied."

"So you will be satisfied by not having a child of your own?"

"Yes." Fu Mingze replied as he looked away from her, not being able to bear the sadness that was currently in her eyes.

"But why?" Yang Meiyi finally asked as her eyes became teary. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"Because.... Because I’m scared Meiyi. My Mom barely said anything to me about my dad but one thing I knew about him was that he also had issues with his heart. "

"But you are getting better, even the doctors said you were getting."

"But I’m still on drugs. Do you know what’s like to live every day on drugs? How it feels for someone to keep telling you about the consequences of not taking your medicine or have to set a timer so that you won’t forget about the daily check up. I don’t want my child to live like that. To live on drugs and always go to the doctor, I’m sorry because I know how much you wanted to have a child of your own but I can’t do it. I can’t see my child resenting his life because he is stuck on drugs and can’t live or play the way normal kids do."

Yang Meiyi’s heart broke when she heard his words, she suddenly hugged and said "You don’t have to be scared."

Fu Mingze embraced her back and said "But I am, I can’t watch and see my child suffer because of me. What if he ends up resenting me for giving him an unhealthy heart?"

"I never knew my Mingze could overthink this much." Yang Meiyi teased as Fu Mingze hid his face on her neck. They stayed in this position for a few moments before Yang Meiyi pulled away and said "Fine, but can you give me some time to think about this."

Fu Mingze nodded and kissed her forehead before placing one on her lips as he said "Let’s go to sleep. We will talk better tomorrow."

Yang Meiyi nodded and lay down on the bed with him, letting him pull her into his arms again. Although their minds were troubled with their own thoughts but the moment sleep approached them, their thoughts ended, even if it was for a little while.

...

Country M National Prison.

As Yang Jiu sat on the chair waiting for the man who had killed his wife to come in, he began having second thoughts.

Why was he here? He had received a call from the prison saying Hu Lihua wanted to talk to a family member of the woman he murdered. He wondered why they didn’t just call Yang Meiyi but they said they had lost her number and he was the only one they could find. He could have just called Yang Meiyi but for some reason, he was curious about what the man who had murdered his wife had to say.

Just then, a man wearing a prison uniform, who looked like he was in his late fifties walked in. The man brought his cuffed hands to a police officer who removed the cuff for him and left.

The man named Hu Lihua, sat down and asked "Are you that woman’s family?"

"I was her husband. You called saying you had something to say, so say it."

Hu Lihua smiled bitterly as tears left his eyes and said "I’m sorry for what happened to your wife. Though I am here paying for my sins but it isn’t the sin of killing your wife."

"What?"

"I guess it should be the sin of failing my family, of making that woman’s daughter think her mother’s soul has found peace because the killer has been caught."

"What nonsense are you saying?" Yang Jiu shouted with a frown.

Hu Lihua’s tired eyes looked at Yang Jiu and said "I want to relieve some of my sins, maybe then my family could forgive me. I wasn’t the one who killed your wife."

Yang Jiu scoffed and said "Isn’t it too late for you to start lying? Even you admitted to your crimes."

"I only did that because I needed to pay for my wife’s surgery. All my life, my wife and my son were the best thing that has ever happened to me and that’s why when he came with an offer of not only paying for my wife’s operation but also giving my family the sum of fifty million I accepted even before I heard the job offer. He promised me that I would only be here for five years but I can’t take the guilt anymore. My son Hu Yifan, came to see me yesterday and said she was gone. The woman who I did all these for was gone so what else should I leave for?"

"So you are saying that you weren’t the one who ran Sang Xiu over? You only took the blame because someone paid you to?"

Hu Lihua nodded as more tears left his eyes.

"Who paid you to take the blame?" Yang Jiu asked with a frown.

Hu Lihua cleaned his tears as he said "At first, I didn’t know who he was but he looked very good-looking and rich. Someone from my class could never meet someone from his class so I thought I might never see him again until I saw him in the business news. His name is Gu Zhen, the current CEO of Gu Corporation."

"What! Are you out of your mind? How dare you accuse that man of such a crime, do you even know who he is?"

"I know he is rich and powerful but still I hope that one-day justice will be brought to those who had hurt that woman and her daughter."

"When I heard my wife’s murderer wanted to speak to me I thought it was urgent, perhaps you wanted to apologize or something but I never knew you still had enough energy to spew such nonsense. Let this be the first and last time you reach out to any of Sang Xiu’s relatives, perhaps being in prison for too long has made you lose your mind, I would appreciate it if you didn’t pass that madness on to anyone else. Especially to my daughter Yang Meiyi." Yang Jiu said and stood up walking fast out of the prison.

Was Gu Zhen the one who paid Hu Lihua? But why? He was sure Gu Zhen had nothing to do with Sang Xiu’s accident unless..... Could it be that he was trying to cover up Yang Jia’s crime? Was Yang Jia the one who ran Sang Xiu over? He sincerely hopes that it isn’t true, his little girl may be many things but she isn’t a murderer, she can’t be the one responsible for Sang Xiu’s death.

Yang Jiu took out his phone and opened a photo of Yang Jia as a child, in the photo, she looked cute and innocent, and seeing that picture made Yang Jiu vow in his heart that even if it was true, even if Yang Jia was responsible for Sang Xiu’s death, then he will never let that truth see the light of day. He will protect his baby girl, no matter the cost he has to pay.
