Chapter 50: My hair has grown back

He added, "So, we can cross out the issue that he might want him for himself. Still, most of his reasons would be personal. I’m sure I told you that humans are treasures because they can be used for guidance, protection, and breeding. In time, many have used them for breeding alone. The reason humans are being pressured right now, if one is ever seen, is because they are rare—almost termed extinct until now."

"Humans were once treated as trash when they were many. They were used as slaves forced into breeding, forced to work as guides, and compelled to heal royal families during those times. They were regarded as outcasts and treated cruelly. Then, one day, they all went extinct, and the beast world felt that shock deeply. Since then, none have been seen... not for over ten thousand years."

"Wow..." Lucien muttered softly. He had never known the truth ran that deep.

So, it meant that the king would likely do one of two things.

Which choice his father would make, Lucien did not know. Would the king use Aries against his will—forcing him to protect, guide, or breed as he pleased? Or would he work around Aries’s wishes, treating him as an honored guest while hiding his true intentions?

Neither option sat well with Lucien, and neither could he predict. All they could do was wait for the day Aries opened his eyes and declared himself well again.

The physician had said Aries needed warmth, and that warmth had been provided even at the cost of offending His Majesty’s favorite consort.

The physician had said Aries required silence, and the king ensured the guards stationed nearby lived as though they themselves did not exist.

The physician had said Aries needed rare tonics, their ingredients nearly impossible to procure, and the king had ordered every market searched until they were found.

Yet after all of this, Aries still refused to wake.

The physician was summoned before the king to explain himself. Then another physician was brought in, and the conclusion remained the same. In the end, the king recalled the first physician and left matters as they were.

Aries was eventually deduced to be in a state where his consciousness had left his body and had yet to return. When it did, they said, he would wake.

Days blurred into weeks, weeks into months, and by the time Aries finally opened his eyes, spring had already arrived quietly replacing the long, merciless winter he had slept through.

Darkness was all Aries perceived as his consciousness slowly slipped back into place. Everything felt heavy, distant, confusing. For a moment, panic rose until he realized his eyes were still closed.

He tried to open them.

Or rather, he tried, and failed. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

His brain fought against his body, his eyelids stubborn and unresponsive. Only after several strained attempts did sensation return, and at last, his eyes fluttered open.

Aries was met with an unfamiliar white bed canopy above him. Purple lace framed the bed, soft and delicate, and when he glanced around, the room itself felt entirely foreign. The decorations suggested it belonged to a lady as rich colors, intricate patterns, and gentle warmth filled the space, soaking him inside this sort of derived happiness.

He exhaled slowly and muttered, "Has it been long?"

He tried to lift his hand, intending to sit up, but his body protested. After several struggles, Aries managed to push himself upright, resting his back against the bed’s armrest. When he finally touched his own arm, his fingers paused.

He was thin. Too thin.

His cheeks felt dry and chapped. When he reached for his head, realization struck.

"Seriously... how many years have gone by?" Aries murmured. "My hair has grown back."

It wasn’t especially long, but it reached toward his neck, curling slightly.

"I need a mirror," he muttered, spotting one a few meters away. Reaching it, however, was another matter entirely.

Just waking up, Aries knew walking would be difficult, that was if he could even manage it at all.

As that thought lingered, the door creaked open.

A familiar figure stepped inside.

"Lucien," Aries called softly.

Shock flashed across Lucien’s face. He dashed toward the bed, and before Aries could react, he was swept into a tight embrace.

The sudden hug caught him completely off guard. He found himself pressed against Lucien’s broad chest, inhaling the familiar scent he remembered from before everything went wrong.

Then it became too much, too tight, too suffocating. Aries pushed gently against Lucien’s hands, his neck pressed awkwardly against Lucien’s chest.

"I’m so sorry," Lucien said quickly, releasing him at once.

Aries rubbed his neck, embarrassment blooming as warmth crept into his cheeks.

"It’s not a bother," he replied softly.

"How are you feeling?" Lucien asked anxiously.

Aries could hear it in his voice, see it in the way Lucien’s eyes scanned his body as though afraid he might vanish again. The concern was so raw that Aries couldn’t help but smile faintly.

It seemed the time that had passed had changed something in Lucien. Had it helped him forget all the saga he had shown him in the courtroom, helped him heal? Or had he simply chosen to bury it?

The questions lingered in Aries’s mind, pressing at his chest until he finally asked,

"Are you not angry at me?"

Lucien froze, caught off guard. He hesitated, searching for the right words before finally answering.

"Why would I be angry at you?"

"I mean..." Aries began, but Lucien interrupted him.

"If it’s about the suicide—yes, I was angry," Lucien admitted quietly. "At first. When I realized what you did, how selfish you were. But that was it."

He swallowed, his voice lowering.

"Waiting all this time for you to open your eyes made me realize I couldn’t stay angry. Not when all I wanted was for you to still be here with me. For you to open your eyes and I’ll be sure you are here with me"
