Traveler of the River of Time and Space-Chapter 479 - 6: Kabukicho
Kabukicho First Street.
Su Ziyu looked up at the red light sign ahead, his eyebrows slightly raised, and said softly, "The work of a Yin Yang Master?"
If you take a closer look at the sign at the entrance, you’ll find it somewhat resembles an unusual torii. The place is filled with a rather mixed miasma, murky air tinged with slight malice enveloping this small parcel of land.
In Huaxia terms, this sign is meant to suppress the feng shui.
However, this thing can’t suppress the demon aura inside. Su Ziyu could smell a faint scent of corpse gas from afar.
Kabuki is traditionally a form of Japanese national performance art, originating in the early Edo period of the 17th century.
After the flames of World War Two extinguished, the designers and constructors of Kabukicho First Street originally intended to make this a traditional entertainment district centered around kabuki performances. But later on, the development took another route. This mere 0.35 square kilometers has become a world-famous area for entertainment, the largest red light district in all of Asia, densely packed with over 5,000 hotels, hostess bars, love hotels, pachinko parlors, and various other establishments, divided up among over 70 extreme path organizations with thousands of gang members. It’s the region with the highest crime rate in Japan.
A mix of all sorts.
It’s Su Ziyu’s first time in such a place, though he did know some people back in Shanghai who liked to frequent Japan. Besides often going to Akihabara, the places they visited most were these exotic locales.
But in their words, these places were all a bit of a rip-off.
Today’s Kabukicho seemed unusually restless, as Su Ziyu could see quite a number of police from afar. Not far off, a crowd had gathered, comprised mostly of policemen, along with members of extreme path organizations characterized by their tattoos, dyed hair, and missing fingers. In Japan, the black organizations are legally recognized entities. Kabukicho has always been jointly managed by the police and extreme path organizations; indeed, most of the time, it’s the latter who maintain law and order.
"Chinese?"
Just as Su Ziyu was about to enter, a man aged about 25 or 26 walked over, dressed quite formally. He glanced up and down at Su Ziyu and, with a somewhat familiar tone, asked, "Bro? Where are you coming from for fun?"
"Shanghai." Su Ziyu stopped and glanced at him.
A faint hint of blood-colored spiritual light emanated from the man’s forehead, indicating his luck hadn’t been very good lately.
"Better not go in today for fun."
"Something’s happened inside." The man pulled a business card from his pocket, earnestly handing it over, "My surname is Tao. You can just call me Little Tao."
"Call me in a couple of days and no matter what type of girl you like, I can arrange it."
"The price will be absolutely fair, guaranteed not to rip off our own people."
A pimp?
Su Ziyu, with a wry smile, reached out to take the business card. He’d heard before that there were Chinese pimps in Tokyo’s red-light streets, specially catering to visiting Chinese, but he hadn’t expected to actually meet one today.
"What happened?" A weak glimmer of spiritual light flickered in Su Ziyu’s eyes.
The man who identified himself as Tao grew momentarily dazed, then mumbled, "Not too sure."
"Just heard that someone died."
"There’s been a conflict with the organizing groups controlling this area, something about a turf war shuffle. I’m just responsible for pimping here, never dealing with the higher-ups."
Su Ziyu, with a thoughtful expression, casually said, "Alright."
"Your luck hasn’t been too good lately; don’t wander around aimlessly. Find a place to stay put for a while before coming out again." 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚
The man responded, "Oh."
Then, he turned and walked to his place, intending to lie low at home for ten days to half a month before going out again.
Demon aura?
Dismissing the Chinese pimp, Su Ziyu suddenly furrowed his brow, glanced around him, and walked in a particular direction.
Kabukicho is divided into Ichome and Nichome.
But basically, it’s the distinction between chicken shops and duck shops. This place has a large number of duck shops. Japan even used to shoot some melodramatic TV series about "Duck Kings."
Su Ziyu sensed the demon aura in a young man with dyed yellow hair, probably not even twenty. He was wandering nearby, then suddenly, apparently sensing something, looked terrified and ran toward the direction of Nichome. Ichome is directly in through the sign, while Nichome is slightly different, filled with countless love hotels, nightclubs, clubs, etc., but without sex shops. It’s primarily an area servicing female clients, with the walls plastered with countless posters of flamboyantly dressed men.
It was gradually getting dark.
There weren’t many people around Kabukicho today, likely related to the recent deterioration in security.
Su Ziyu walked neither too fast nor too slow.
But the young man with dyed yellow hair couldn’t escape his sight. The man’s expression grew increasingly frightened, as if he was trying to get a clear look at Su Ziyu. While running away, he suddenly turned back, continuing to run forward with his body, but his neck and head twisted 180 degrees, running forward with his face in the opposite direction.
"Huh?" Su Ziyu raised an eyebrow at the man’s nearly twisted like a pretzel neck.
The blonde-haired young man turned and ducked into a nearby dark alley.
When Su Ziyu followed him into the alley, a ferocious human head suddenly came flying towards him, with a blue face and long fangs, a flicker of ghostly fire burning in its eyes, and it opened its mouth to spit a ball of ghostly green flames at him.
