Alex split off from the group, disappearing into the nearby hallway. The shadows wrapped around him as he vanished from sight, already scouting.
Steve, Natasha, Tony, and Bruce stood together for a moment.
Tony exhaled. "We’re really doing this. Hunting our own people."
Steve shook his head. "We’re hunting the ones who betrayed us."
Natasha glanced around to make sure no one was listening. "We need to move now. HYDRA could already be covering their tracks after Garrett got caught."
Bruce checked his tablet. "I’ll set up the monitoring system in the lab. Tony, I’ll meet you there."
Tony nodded and started walking. "Let’s keep the explosions to zero today."
Bruce followed him. "Working on it."
Steve and Natasha headed in the opposite direction.
"We should start with security reports," Steve said. "Anyone who’s been acting strange or accessing restricted areas."
Natasha switched on her tablet. "I’ll cross-check with Garrett’s known contacts."
Steve asked quietly, "Do you think someone close to us might be involved?"
Natasha looked serious. "HYDRA wants positions of power. The closer to Fury, the better."
Steve didn’t like the sound of that. "Then we need to be ready."
Meanwhile...
Alex
Alex moved through the halls unseen. Agents walked past without noticing him. He listened for anything that sounded like secret planning.
After a few minutes he spotted a group of three agents whispering near a locked storage room. They glanced around nervously before entering.
Alex narrowed his eyes. "Well, that was suspicious..."
He slipped forward silently and phased through the door right behind them.
Inside, the agents opened a hidden panel and pulled out a small device with the HYDRA logo on it.
Alex grinned. "Got you."
Before he could grab them, one of the agents turned and whispered sharply:
"We’re being watched."
They scattered and ran in different directions.
Alex groaned. "Seriously? How do they always know?"
He chased the closest one, knocking him down and pinning him to the floor.
Alex growled, "Start talking. What was that device?"
The agent smirked. "You have no idea how deep HYDRA goes."
Alex tightened the shadows. "Last chance."
The agent’s eyes bulged. He gasped out a few words:
"Look closer... your friends—"
Before he could finish, a small click sounded. The HYDRA device beeped.
Alex swore. "Oh come on—"
BOOM!
A small explosion rocked the room.
The lights went out.
The other two agents were gone.
Alex stood back up, annoyed but unharmed.
"Fury is not going to like this," he muttered.
Back with the team
An alarm blared through the building.
Tony checked his tablet. "Something just exploded near Storage Wing B."
Steve looked at Natasha. "Alex."
Natasha nodded. "Let’s go."
The group ran through the halls.
They found Alex standing in the dark hallway, covered in dust but looking fine.
Steve crossed his arms. "This is what ’don’t act alone’ means."
Alex pointed to the scorch marks. "Hydra agents. They were hiding a device. They blew it up before I could stop them."
Tony crouched near the debris, holding up a small piece of twisted metal. "That’s advanced tech. Not S.H.I.E.L.D. standard."
Bruce scanned the piece. "This wasn’t meant to kill anyone. Just erase evidence."
Natasha frowned. "That means they’re spooked already."
Steve looked around carefully. "HYDRA knows we’re onto them."
Fury arrived with two armed guards, furious.
"What happened?"
Alex answered first. "Mini bomb. They escaped."
Fury nodded. "Then they’ll alert more of them. We need to move faster."
Steve stepped forward. "We’ll find them. And we’ll stop them."
Fury nodded slowly.
"No more mistakes. HYDRA is active, and they’re dangerous."
He looked around the group.
"We start the real hunt now."
Right after Fury finished speaking, Tony’s tablet buzzed. He looked down and frowned.
"Uh... guys? Someone is trying to access Level 10 restricted files."
Bruce leaned closer. "That’s Fury’s clearance level."
Natasha’s eyes narrowed. "Who has access to those besides Fury?"
Fury answered with a tight voice. "Only a handful of people. And most of them are trusted leaders."
Steve looked at the others. "We need to move. Now."
Tony started typing fast on his device. "I can trace the signal’s location—"
He stopped, blinking.
"That can’t be right."
Bruce asked, "Where is it coming from?"
Tony swallowed.
"It’s coming from inside this floor."
Everyone looked around.
Alex nodded looking around "So we have another traitor very close."
Natasha readied her gun. "Let’s split up and sweep the area."
Fury pointed at Alex. "You stick with us this time."
Alex sighed. "Fine... team effort."
Moments later — Operations Wing
The team moved quietly through the hallway. It was mostly empty — too empty.
Steve whispered, "Where is everyone?"
Bruce checked his tablet. "Most agents were called to a false briefing upstairs. Someone wanted this area clear."
Natasha raised her gun. "Classic Hydra setup."
Suddenly, metal shutters slammed down behind them — sealing the hallway.
CLANG!
Steve turned around. "We’re locked in."
Alex clenched his fists. "Trap."
Tony tapped his wrist device. "Trying override... no luck. The system isn’t obeying."
Fury stepped forward. "Show yourself."
For a moment, there was silence.
Then a voice came through the speakers — calm and cold.
"You should have stayed blind, Director."
Natasha stiffened. She recognized the voice.
"Sitwell."
Agent Jasper Sitwell walked into view from the far end of the corridor, clapping slowly.
He smiled.
"HYDRA has been waiting for this moment."
Alex stepped forward, shadows rising. "I’ve been waiting too. Let’s skip the monologue."
Sitwell smirked. "Always impatient. Typical."
He pressed a button. The floor panels shifted.
Dozens of automated turrets unfolded from the walls and ceiling, aiming at the team.
Tony raised his hands slightly. "Please tell me these are the friendly type."
The turrets whirred louder, charging up.
Bruce whispered, "That’s a no."
Steve moved into a defensive stance. "Ready yourselves."
Alex grinned. "Finally, something fun."
Sitwell raised his hand dramatically.
"Goodbye, Avengers—"
Before he could finish, Alex vanished into shadows.
Tony’s eyes widened. "Here we go."
Sitwell’s face dropped.
"Where did he—"
A dark tendril shot out from behind Sitwell, grabbing him by the collar and yanking him backward.
Sitwell screamed as he was dragged into the darkness.
Turrets fired in panic.
PEW-PEW-PEW!
Steve blocked bullets with his shield.
Natasha ducked behind him and returned precise shots.
Bruce accidentally started hulking out. "This was supposed to be a quiet mission!"
Tony took cover. "My bad! This always happens!"
