Chapter 161: New home

"So what? I save your life and don’t even get a thank you? This attitude may fly with that silver blood sucker but not with me, darling,"

Arabella saw no humour in his tone. In fact, she never took anyone lightly when addressed in that manner. Especially when the chastising came from men in power.

Thus, in response, her heart grew fussier, leading to a louder and faster breathing cadence, "Please forgive me. I meant no disrespect! I was merely-"

"Calm down," Cynric immediately put an end to her frantic raving, "I won’t bite your head off for that," the look of exasperation on him shifted back into one of amusement, "Had I not met other humans before you, I’d have believed your kind can’t take a joke at all,"

Her lips trembled, but air was all they’d expelled. Eyes on the ground, the young woman tried to keep her tears from flowing but the image of Cynric ripping Vali’s vocal cords out persisted, haunting her the whole time.

Her state of mind worsened when the Alpha decided to move closer. Although not so sudden, his first step wrenching a jolt out of her.

"When will you stop crying, girl?"

He did not stomp. On the contrary, his feet were soft on the ground, walking with a lot of confidence but quite carefully.

In the end, he stopped mere inches away before crouching down to her level. So close his warmth engulfed her entirely. It was much stronger than Silas’ ever was, much more suffocating, nearly unbearable...

The young woman inched away as much as possible, but the wall behind her allowed no more distance between herself and the Alpha. Any more of it and her body would have fused with the stone.

"Don’t get me wrong, you are still very beautiful even with those tears clouding your sight, but I much preferred your looks the first time we met," he pushed a light chuckle as his hand extended towards her, delicately grasping a strand of her soft hair before slowly moving it away from her face then tucking it behind her ear.

His skin barely grazed her own, but that fleeting connection emboldened the shivers consuming her body.

"I admit, Dresses do suit you better," he spoke in the huskiest voice his throat allowed, the smell of raw meat and blood wafting through his mouth, "It’s a shame they are inconvenient for a life led in caves,"

It was at those words that her eyes finally snapped onto his. They no longer glowed the way they did under the full moon, revealing their true shade, a remarkable azure, very similar to Remus’.

If she ever doubted the familiarity that linked them, their irises stood as proof enough they were father and son.

"What’s with that look?" once again, it was Cynric that ended the silence between them.

Arabella instantly broke eye contact but remained mute, turning and tossing his latest words regarding her in mind.

Many other statements knocked at her consciousness’ doors, seemingly for the sole purpose of igniting further angst at her core.

First, Katherine’s words about how wolf folk always took what they wanted, then Ada’s about how the Alpha had proposed. Next in line was Remus’ observation about how she’d soon become family...

"Tsk, tsk, tsk...," he clicked his tongue right by her ear, "You weren’t expecting me to deliver you back to the blood suckers on a silver platter, were you?" he chuckled, "How fair would that be to me and my people, huh?" the grin never left his features, "I go through all of the trouble to free you from whoever wanted to get their hands on you and you think I’d simply let you go," he half asked towards the end.

Once again, the young woman held her peace, but while keeping her voice on a tight leash, her expression betrayed her completely.

Eyebrows knitted and eyes wide, the sheer terror devouring her face needed no words to transpire.

"I see you held out hope until now," he said, "Well get those ideas out of your head. This is your new home. The sooner you accept it, the better," his hand traveled near her face and fit her entire jaw between his fingers before forcing her to look at him, and while Cynric wasn’t by any means rough, he seemed determined to make it happen, "Besides, what would be more ideal for a young woman like you than to start and raise her own family?" he stared through to her soul, never allowing her eyes to drift away for a second.

That was it! The drop that flooded the dam, the feather that disrupted the balance, the final of last straws. No amount of strength or courage managed to contain the deluge of tears, sniveling and sobbing that overcame her in that moment.

Arabella attempted to turn away but his hand, hard as stone, cemented her neck still.

When all else failed, it was up to her eyelids squeezing shut as a last haven for her eyes to escape his sight.

"Don’t worry," he brought his face even closer to hers for his warm breath to brush her skin, "Once I make you mine, all of your doubts and fears will evaporate. You’ll be the happiest you’ve ever been in your life. That’s a promise," he nodded slowly, "The only reason I haven’t done so yet is to keep my word, but it won’t be long before that gets settled. Only a few hours," Cynric did his best to whisper those words as near to her mouth as possible, making sure to breathe into it.

Through her cries, a sentence finally aligned, "But I am human!" she protested in the meekest of voices.

"And?" the index finger on his free hand gently trailed along her face from her forehead down to the bridge of her nose, "You won’t be the first human to breed with a wolf. In fact, you already met one such result," he marked a pause before continuing, "Cherreka is one of the strongest members of this pack and had it not been for her physical state at this age, she’d have null doubt been our leader,"
