Unlimited estates for rural beauty-Chapter 19 Feng Xi Resolutely Wants to Break Ties
Lady Liu Li stood up and was about to leave. "Hey, big sister-in-law, wait a moment. Wait." Grandmother hurried forward to hold onto Liu Li, fearing that this important guest would walk away.
"Big sister-in-law, please take a seat. Your aunt is long of hair but short of insight, don’t concern yourself with her. Let’s proceed as we discussed earlier, what do you say, sister-in-law?" Seeing that things were not going well and acknowledging that the other party wouldn’t add to the dowry, Grandfather stepped in, playing the good guy.
"Alright, then we’ll do as we previously agreed. Tomorrow, we’ll come to give the marriage gifts and would also like to take the bride back with us. Although it’s a bit abrupt and not quite proper, we can make proper arrangements when they have their grand wedding. Elder, what do you say, can we?" Lady Liu Li asked.
"Yes, since she’s to be a child bride, it doesn’t matter when she’s taken away, as it’s to her fortune, not her misfortune. Do we still need to set a specific time for it?" Grandfather said casually.
Feng Xi scoffed coldly as he watched his younger sister being bartered away like goods, sneering at Grandfather, "Grandfather, I’ve told you, I will not allow my sister to marry an idiot. If you’re so keen on that dowry, please find someone else to marry off."
"When adults are speaking, what business is it of a kid to intervene? You have no place in this conversation, go stand aside," Third Uncle joked from the side, nervous that the arrangement might fall through.
"Third Uncle, how is it that my brother has no say in this? Right now, he’s the head of our family," Feng Xuxu challenged Third Uncle with raised eyebrows.
"You little wench, this has nothing to do with you, go off and play," Aunt Feng Dongzhi said, waving her handkerchief, anxious inside because her own dowry would be secure if this marriage went through.
"Aunt, if I’m a little wench, then are you a man? They’re discussing my marriage, and it has nothing to do with me? Or is it your business perhaps?" Feng Xuxu retorted.
"You sharp-tongued brat, once we marry you off tomorrow, we’ll see how you can continue to be so arrogant," Feng Dongzhi said, her face twisted menacingly at Feng Xuxu.
"Everybody shut up, look at yourselves," Grandfather glared at Third Uncle and Aunt Feng Dongzhi, then turned to Feng Xi, "I’ll make the decisions on this matter. You’ll marry her off whether you want to or not. I’m in charge of this household."
"Big sister-in-law, sorry to have amused you with our affairs. We’ll handle it just like this. Tomorrow I’ll be at home waiting for you to come with the marriage gifts," Grandfather turned back to Liu Li and said.
"That’s settled then, with your word, I can rest assured. I’ll head back now to prepare, and I’ll return tomorrow," she said, standing up to leave.
"Hold on, Lady Liu, my sister won’t be marrying your son," Feng Xi, red-faced with anger, told Liu Li.
Turning to Grandfather he continued, "Grandfather, I am firmly against letting my sister marry an idiot. Since you claim to be the head of this household, then I will take my sister and formally leave the clan. We’ll no longer be descendants of the Feng Family," Feng Xi said, and after his words, the room fell silent. Grandfather stood stunned, Grandmother’s mouth agape, both utterly shocked that such words could come from their well-behaved grandson Feng Xi. Third Uncle and his wife were dumbfounded, Aunt Feng Dongzhi’s face looked constipated, all her thoughts on her lost dowry, while Lady Liu Li, standing aside, was even more furious, seeing this as a slight against her intellectually challenged son.
Lady Liu Li let out a cold laugh, "Aunt, since the girl disagrees, I won’t force the issue. There are plenty of others waiting for a dowry of a hundred taels. If it weren’t for your niece crying poverty at my place, saying she couldn’t get by, I wouldn’t have bothered with this discomfort, nor caused your grandson and you to break off relations. If this gets out, where will I put my face? Fine, let’s end this here, and consider it never happened," said Liu Li, angrily waving her handkerchief before getting up and heading out.
"Hey, hey, big sister-in-law, wait, wait," Third Aunt Feng Liu, called out while tugging at Liu Li’s sleeve.
"What am I waiting for, Auntie, waiting to be chased out, or waiting to break off relations? Enough, you stop pulling at me. And don’t you come back to cry poverty later on, look at the mess you’ve made," Liu Li said, shaking off her sleeve and leaving. She walked out of the courtyard, got into her family’s carriage, and went back home.
