Chapter 489: Chapter 489: Caterpillar Mom Doesn’t Bite (3)

Soon, Dugu Chen led the two of them to the field. Looking at the ground covered with water, topped with green rice seedlings, Qiqi bent over to roll up his trouser legs, his small feet stepping slowly into the paddy field.

Seeing her brother enter the field, Yueyue climbed down from their father’s strong body, imitating her brother by rolling up her trouser legs as well. As soon as her little feet entered the field, they provoked a burst of exclamations, "Wow... Wow."

"What’s wrong?"

"What’s wrong with sister?"

A deep and a crisp voice rose at the same time, both nervously looking at the little figures in the paddy field.

"Giggle, the water is so cool, and there are fish beside my feet!" Yueyue laughed openly, her small hands excitedly pointing at the rice field fish swimming back and forth under her feet, issuing a stream of gasps of surprise.

Dugu Chen and Qiqi both sighed in relief, their sighs so synchronized that they provoked a bout of light laughter from the long-term workers on the edge of the field.

"You two be careful, don’t walk into the paddy. Just play on the edge," Dugu Chen instructed, standing on the edge of the field, reminding the two little dumplings in the water.

"Got it, Dad, you’re such a nag," Yueyue said, waving her small hand and bending over to watch the bright red fish swimming back and forth at her feet.

Qiqi took another step forward and felt something swiftly pass under his foot. His curiosity piqued once more, he bent down and reached into the water, grasping a handful of mud, but when he opened his hand, he found nothing. Unwilling to accept defeat, he continued to search. He clearly felt something slippery move by his foot; there was no mistaking his feeling. Finally, by the edge of a rice stalk, he felt a hole and gently touched it. The creature moved a bit and was trying to escape when Qiqi caught it firmly. Then he pulled his hand out of the water and saw, "A snake!" Instantly, he fiercely threw the ’snake’ towards the shore, his little face turning somewhat pale. In the muddy paddy field, he quickly picked up his sister, who was having fun, and started to head back.

Startled by his daughter’s cry, Dugu Chen had just calmed down when his son’s yell made him break out in cold sweat. Following the trajectory of the ’snake’ thrown by Qiqi, a hidden weapon from his sleeve flew out, nailing the ’snake’ firmly to the ground. Without a chance to wriggle, the creature was left lifeless. Dugu Chen looked at the somewhat yellowish ’snake’ on the ground, and couldn’t help but think of that giant python.

"Son, did it bite you?"

Seeing his father so worried, Qiqi quickly shook his head, "No, I threw it away as soon as I caught it."

"You two stop playing and come up right now."

"Dad, I just started having fun, let me play a bit more!" Yueyue rolled her eyes at her big brother. Such a fuss over nothing; they were impervious to all poisons, so why worry about a snake?

"No, come up immediately," Dugu Chen furrowed his frowning brows and glared at his sister, who was more mischievous than her brother.

The long-term workers in the field, seeing the creature on the ground and the pitiful look on the little girl, who was obviously a daughter from a wealthy family and likely had not played in such a place before, were moved with compassion. A kind-hearted worker told the handsome gentleman on the edge, "My lord, that’s a slowworm, it doesn’t bite people. We often see them in the rice fields."

Dugu Chen looked half-believing and half-doubtful at the peasants with their baskets, then at the dead body that lay stiff on the ground, upon closer inspection, the thing which looked like a snake but not quite.

Seeing his skepticism, the workers took one out of the basket in front of them, "Look, although they don’t damage the crops, these creatures make holes in the ground. We are afraid the fish will suffer losses, so we catch them every few days."
