Unlimited estates for rural beauty-Chapter 498: Returning to Feng Family Village (4)
Feng Xuxu listened to her daughter’s "adorable" conversation, and with a soft ache in her belly, her face struggled to maintain a smile as tears started to fall. Dugu Chen, holding his laughing wife, also had the first smile on his face in two days.
Qiqi sat there with a reddened face, arms crossed, eyes closed, quietly reciting the aphorisms of martial arts to herself.
The morning was filled with laughter and chatter as they hurried along to a small town. Tian Yi, who had endured hours of non-human torture to his ears, finally found relief and insisted on not hurrying the carriage any further that afternoon.
Arriving in town, they found a decent restaurant. Everyone had a quick lunch and took a brief rest before setting out again, hoping to reach the next town and stay overnight before continuing on their journey.
The skies were kind, and for three days, it had not rained. Finally, on the evening of the third day, they reached Yunzhou Prefecture and met with Uncle Ma at Zuiyun Pavilion in Longgang Town. After a chat, they settled into the inn to wait for dawn before heading to Feng Family Village.
The stars faded as the eastern sky turned the color of fish bellies, then dark blue, which gradually lightened as the sun rose, heralding the arrival of a new day.
Yueyue woke up early and ran to her mother’s room, seeing that both her father and mother were ready to go. Her excited little face was flushed with a brilliant red, her two deep dimples hung on her cheeks, her eyes squeezed into crescent moons, revealing two small canine teeth, showing how happy she was at that moment.
"Dad, Mom, hurry up, we are almost at Uncle’s house." 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
Feng Xuxu watched her daughter hop and skip ahead, her heart slowly filling with love, her face embracing a happy smile.
Without any surprise, when the couple came downstairs, the other guards were already prepared. After breakfast, the group set off for Feng Family Village.
The once muddy path had now turned into a paved road with bricks, and on both sides were planted wisteria trees. At the end of July and the beginning of August, wisteria was in full bloom. From afar, a wave of blue and purple stretched out, and walking on this road felt like walking in a fairyland.
Both Qiqi and Yueyue were captivated by the scenery ahead, and even though they had seen countless flowers, they had never seen such an extensive display of wisteria. The clusters of flowers linked together, hanging down like long ribbons, swaying in the breeze and filling the air with fragrance.
Feng Xuxu had not expected such a dramatic change in Feng Family Village and was even more emotional at heart.
Walking through the village, they saw no children running around. A wide road led directly to Mandala Villa on Nameless Mountain. The carriages entered Feng Family Village smoothly and quickly made their way toward the villa.
"Halt, who goes there?" A muscular man guarding the gate stood in front of them, his face wary as he sized up Xuan Yue.
Unable to restrain her curiosity, Yueyue pulled back the carriage curtain to peer outside with wide eyes. Xuan Yue got off the carriage, glanced at the muscular gatekeeper, and approached him saying, "Go report to Young Master Feng that Miss Feng and the Young Master-in-law have arrived. Ask him to come and meet us quickly."
The gatekeeper was dubious but, seeing they did not appear to be lying and exchanging a glance with another, he turned and ran back to report to the Young Master.
Mi Yan, who had just finished checking the sour beans on the back hill, returned to the front courtyard to see the gatekeeper, Wang Cong, rushing over.
"Wang Cong, you should be guarding the gate. Where are you off to in such a hurry?"
"Butler, two carriages and several men on horseback have arrived at the gate. They claim to be Miss Feng and the Young Master-in-law, and they are asking for the Young Master to come and greet them!"
Mi Yan was stunned. Miss Feng? That was the Empress. They were here, right outside the estate. Without waiting to collect his senses, he walked quickly toward the gate, urgently saying to Wang Cong as he went, "Go call back the Young Master who is inspecting the fields. Tell him... Miss Feng Xuxu and the Young Master-in-law have arrived at the estate, and he should return quickly to welcome them."
Although Wang Cong did not understand why the arrival of the Miss for a family visit warranted such a stir, he followed the butler’s instructions and sprinted out through the side door.
Mi Yan’s heart was filled with an excitement no one else could understand. He was the first to be recognized for his talent by Miss Feng, who had agreed to employ him for five hundred silver per annum, and what’s more, when he proposed a five-year contract, she did not even blink an eye before agreeing. He had watched Miss Feng and Young Master Feng start from nothing, though the hardships were known to no one but himself.
"Quick, open the gates to welcome Miss Feng and the Young Master-in-law into the estate." Having just reached the main gate, without even walking over, he called out to Wang Min, the other gatekeeper.
Wang Min obeyed the butler and, using his strong arms, struggled to push one of the large doors open. Huang Yi and Di An, seeing this, dismounted and, flinging their sleeves, gathered their inner strength from their Dantian, assisting Wang Min to open the doors.
With a creaking sound, the heavy doors were opened by the three of them. Mi Yan stepped outside, bent down respectfully and greeted them: "Miss, Young Master-in-law, this old servant has arrived late, please forgive me."
From inside the carriage, Feng Xuxu, hearing the familiar voice, felt a surge of emotion: "No need for such formality, Butler Mi. We’d better talk inside the estate."
"Yes, yes, yes, the old servant is simply too overjoyed." Mi Yan bent forward, voice trembling with excitement, stepped aside, and respectfully let the carriages enter the estate.
Tian Yi and Di An then helped Wang Min close the heavy gate again. Before Wang Min could thank them, they had already vanished from the spot. Wang Min turned around, finding that the others had disappeared, his intended words stuck in his throat.
Arriving at the second gate, Feng Xuxu, holding Yueyue, and Dugu Chen carrying Qiqi, stepped down from the carriage. Feng Xuxu, looking upon the villa she had not seen for so long, felt a deep sense of familiarity. She put down her restless daughter and proceeded toward the Lotus Garden.
Entering the Lotus Garden, crossing the small bridge, she saw the pond full of blooming lotuses swaying in the wind and rippling in the water. Below them, she could just make out the large fish swimming back and forth. A skiff remained moored in its original spot, unchanged.
