Unlimited estates for rural beauty-Chapter 627: Arriving at Loka Town (1)
On December 15, three days after the banquet, Feng Xuxu sat by the window at night, gazing at the moon above. It was so bright that even without a candle lit in the room, one could still make out the furnishings inside. The night’s cold wind blew in through the open window, chilling to the bone. Outside, the bare trees stood stark in the yard, their leaves long gone, with only a few birds perched on the branches, seemingly stunned, curled up there, their feathers tightly wrapping their tiny, thin claws, eyes closed in deep sleep.
"It’s too cold, stop looking and go back to sleep,"
A cloak was draped over her; she hastily wiped the tears from her eyes, smiling and looking back at him coyly as she tugged at his hand, "I can’t sleep, keep me company a little longer."
Dugu Chen chuckled, picked her up, and sat in her place, placing her on his lap as they both watched the bright moon outside together.
"My lord, I must leave tomorrow. You must take care of yourself at home, and not go to bed too late," she said, wrapping her arms around his neck as the tears involuntarily started to stream down again.
Reaching out with a large hand to gently pat her back, his voice was slightly hoarse, somewhat choked up, "Mm, you too, pay attention to resting. Don’t hurry back; take your time on the road. If you move too quickly, you’ll get carsick."
In his embrace, she nodded vigorously, hands clutching tightly at his clothes, never willing to lift her head.
After sitting together for a while longer, Dugu Chen, feeling pity for her as she would be traveling by carriage the next day and wouldn’t be able to rest well for some time, picked her up with one arm and lightly waved his other hand, closing the window automatically, shutting out the bright moonlight.
In the bedroom, Feng Xuxu, exhausted from crying, unknowingly drifted off into a dazed sleep. Dugu Chen gazed at the woman in his arms as if he couldn’t get enough of her, watching her until dawn arrived, his posture unchanged from when she had first fallen asleep.
When it was time for the morning court, the eunuchs were anxious outside the door, but the person inside didn’t move an inch, still on the bed, his captivating eyes fixed on her, though they lacked their usual luster.
Seeing this, Eunuch Wei, the steward, understandingly nodded his head and waved his hand to dismiss the eunuchs beneath him. After they all left, he turned and walked toward the great hall.
By the time Feng Xuxu woke up, it was already daylight. Opening her slightly swollen eyelids, she was surprised to see a figure in white undergarments. She looked up to find him smiling at her: "Awake at last!"
"Mm," she said lazily, turning her head to look outside, noticing how the day had barely begun. He should be at court by now... Could it be... She turned back and asked the man beside her, "You didn’t go to court?"
"Seeing you sleep so restlessly, I was afraid that any movement would wake you, so I didn’t attend the morning court. I presume Eunuch Wei has already gone to inform the ministers," he explained.
Hearing his words, warmth filled her heart. She reached out to pinch his cheek, "You are so foolish, but I like that about you."
Pulling down his lady’s hand, he kissed it: "If my lady likes it, I shall continue to play the fool."
Giggling melodiously, her laughter echoed in the bedroom for a long time before Feng Xuxu stopped, straightening up to leave a kiss on his face: "You are only allowed to be foolish in front of me. Outside, you must be smart."
"Alright, as my lady wishes."
Xuxu yawned and blinked her heavy eyelids, then laughed bitterly, holding his hand coquettishly, "Do I look awful now? My eyelids seem so swollen."
Dugu Chen reached out to touch her bright eyes, shaking his head: "My lady is beautiful, not at all unsightly." He looked at his woman who was about to leave and forced a smile.
