Chapter 53 - Crossing The Boundaries

As if that wasn't enough, she continued,

"I know the contract says we shouldn't meddle in each other's business, but I'd say bringing a woman home is crossing the boundaries. I hope you respect that and do whatever you want outside this mansion. You're a wealthy man, and I'm sure this isn't the only mansion you own. So, for the good of both of us, I advise you to take your blondes somewhere else."

Zethan's brow arched slightly in surprise.

"Blondes, huh?"

He chuckled, the amusement in his tone unmistakable.

"What makes you say that? What if I told you the lady who came here earlier was my sister?"

Lilia's eyes widened slightly.

"That's a lie! Zethan, you told me earlier that you have no family."

Zethan grinned at her sharpness.

"Oh, Lilia, you're wrong. I do have a family now... you. You're my family," he said, his voice smooth, playful, and maddeningly composed.

Lilia's heart began to race.

'Don't mind him. He is just trying to distract you,' She told herself.

She squared her shoulders, refusing to let his words affect her.

"I see my Loris is displeased that I brought a lady home, hmm? So tell me, are you jealous?" he teased.

Lilia's lips pressed together into a thin line. Then, slowly, she spoke.

"My husband."

Zethan fell silent, momentarily stunned by her words. He stilled, his sharp eyes fixed on her as she continued.

"It is normal to feel displeased because it is disrespectful. But still, if you choose to keep bringing your blondes here..." she paused, her breath hitching when she suddenly felt Zethan's fingers slip into her silky dark hair, rubbing against it with slow, deliberate movements.

Lilia's breath caught in her throat.

Zethan's smirk deepened.

"Blondes, you keep saying," he murmured, tilting his head slightly as he continued stroking her hair. "But this is no blonde, dear. This is even prettier than all the blondes I've seen."

Lilia wasn't sure whether she should be pleased or annoyed by his words.

She parted her lips to speak, but Zethan beat her to it.

"So tell me, what if I still bring these blondes home?"

He watched as her expression shifted, her displeasure unmistakable.

Lilia held his gaze, her voice cool and steady.

"Fine then," she said, crossing her arms. "That means you wouldn't mind if I brought my brunettes here too, hmm?"

Zethan's eyes widened at her unexpected retort, but what truly caught him off guard was the brunette part.

His smirk faded.

"You won't," he said, his voice quieter now, as if something had suddenly clicked in his mind.

Lilia lifted her chin, enjoying the way his teasing demeanor suddenly shifted.

"Oh yeah? Watch me," she challenged, a slow smile curving her lips.

Before Lilia knew it, as she lifted her head, she caught a flicker of something on his face—displeasure.

Was he annoyed?

Her smile deepened slightly. But just as she parted her lips to speak further, Zethan turned away. And just like that, he left, closing the door with a soft click.

Lilia blinked.

What had just happened?

What he had done a few seconds ago... was he truly upset?

She remained silent, but regret never crossed her mind. Not even in the slightest.

Why would he be annoyed at her for calling a name when he had been the one to bring someone home?

Lilia had just finished dinner and was freshening up in the bathroom when she realized that Zethan hadn't come to eat. Had he left again? But she hadn't said anything wrong—at least, she didn't think so.

Had she gone overboard? Been too much? No. She had simply spoken her mind, and for that, she felt a small sense of pride. But still... was it because of what she said that he had left? She hadn't seen him all day, and now it was already dark. Did that mean she would be spending the night here alone?

Not that it bothered her. Or rather, it did—but she didn't want to admit it. At least she had her space, right?

A sigh escaped her lips as she turned her focus back to bathing. The warm water cascaded over her skin, washing away the tension she hadn't even realized she was holding. After rinsing off, she massaged shampoo into her scalp, fingers working through the strands of her hair before rinsing it out. The scent of vanilla and honey filled the air, calming her nerves ever so slightly.

Once she was done, she grabbed a towel and wrapped it around her body before stepping out of the shower. She took her time blow-drying her hair, making sure it wasn't dripping wet before gathering it into a loose bun. Not too tight, not too loose—just enough to prevent it from looking like a bird's nest in the morning, she then slipped into a silk nightwear.

With that done, she walked toward the door.

As Lillia opened the door and stepped into the bedroom, the lights flickered twice.

Her breath caught in her throat.

Then, just as quickly as they had flickered, the room was plunged into darkness.

A chill ran down her spine.

Her heart pounded. What was happening?

A tightness crept into her chest as she tried to move. This had never happened before—so why now? Her instincts screamed at her to stay still, to listen, to be aware. Fear gripped her as she took slow, cautious steps toward the bed, reaching out blindly for her phone.

But then—

A chilling realization struck her.

Where was her phone?

She had placed it on the nightstand before entering the bathroom. It should have been within reach.

A prickle of unease crawled up her arms.

Then, suddenly, the phone screen lit up.

A wave of relief washed over her.

She exhaled, taking a step toward it.

But just as quickly, the screen went blank.

She tapped on it—only to find nothing.

The phone was gone.

What?

Lillia's fingers curled into the fabric of her nightgown as she shook her head.

"No, this can't be happening." She whispered the words to herself, her breath shaky.

Snapping her head to the side, she searched the darkness for any sign of movement, any figure, anything at all.

But there was nothing.

What was all this?

For the past few days, nothing strange had happened—so why now?

A sudden glow illuminated the room.

Her phone screen.

Only this time, it wasn't on the nightstand.

It was on the sofa.

Lillia's heart dropped.

Her throat tightened as her fingers clenched into a fist.

This wasn't normal.

This wasn't possible.

She swallowed hard, forcing herself to stay calm. Think, Lillia. Think.

Her mind screamed at her to stay away, but a deeper, more foolish part of her wanted to grab the phone, to see if someone—or something—had touched it.

She took a shaky step back instead.

No.

Don't touch the phone.

Go turn on the light.

Her fingers fumbled in the darkness as she reached out for the switch.

Then—

A soft footstep.

Lillia's heart stopped.

She didn't know what to do.

No—she didn't even know if she could do anything.

Then, before she could react, a hand settled on her shoulder.

A scream tore from her lips.

"Ahhh!"

She stumbled back, her body jolting in fear. "Loris, you don't have to worry. It's me."

That voice—unmistakable.

"Zethan?" Lilia's breath hitched.

"Yes, it's me."

Her body trembled, the adrenaline still rushing through her veins. Before she could think, she launched herself at him—literally.

Her arms wrapped around his neck, her legs locking around his waist, silk nightgown and all.

She buried her face into his shoulder, her breath coming out in uneven gasps. "Let's go. Let's go."

Zethan exhaled, his arms instinctively securing her against him. He could feel the slight tremble in her body, but slowly, she began to calm down.

Not to mention the maddening scent of vanilla that clung to his senses like an intoxicating spell.

For some odd reason, she didn't feel the need to look around anymore.

There was safety in him.

Then, his voice broke through the silence, low and amused.

"It's fine. I'm here now. You can come down."

But Lillia shook her head against his neck. "I can't. I won't."

She shut her eyes tightly as Zethan's grip on her waist firmed, steadying her as he carried her across the room.

With one hand, he flicked on the light.

The brightness stung her eyes, but she refused to let go of him.

Then he spoke again, voice melting into her ears. "Loris, don't move. Whatever you do, don't move."

Lillia's heart pounded.

The way he said it sent a shiver down her spine.

Still, she nodded immediately, obeying without hesitation.

And then—

Zethan laughed.

Not just any laugh—one of amused surprise, as if he couldn't quite believe what he was seeing.

Lillia's eyes flew open, her brows furrowing in confusion.

"Who knew my Loris could be this scared, huh?"

The teasing in his voice made her heart stutter. "But wait... I thought Mr. Brunette was going to save you?"

Her breath caught.

"You...." she whispered in surprise.

Her lips parted in disbelief.

The heat rushed to her face as she pulled away slightly, her cheeks burning.

He was laughing at her.

For the first time, she saw his perfect teeth—sharp, white, and annoyingly mesmerizing.

She was awestruck.

But beyond that—

So this was all because of what she had said earlier?

Had he done all this just to mess with her?

Oh my—

What was wrong with this man?

Zethan's lips parted as if to speak again.

But before he could, Lilia did something completely unexpected.

She bit him.

Hard.

Right on the neck.
