Chapter 462: 8.62 The Past And Future

It was a déjà vu. As soon as his consciousness surfaced, Lu Yizhou snapped his eyes open to find that he was standing on two feet!

Glancing around warily, Lu Yizhou discovered that he was currently in a long narrow hallway, one whose end he could not see. Everywhere around him was pure white; the wall, ceiling, floor... if Lu Yizhou did not know any better, he would think that he was in a vast, boundless space of nothingness.

[666? Ozzie?] He could not find Ozzie where she was usually perching on his shoulder, nor could he connect with both of them. [Where are you two?]

Goddamnit, his mind link with them had been cut off!

He might understand it if it was Ozzie, but 666... It was Lu Yizhou’s system. Disconnecting their link meant messing with Lu Yizhou’s mind and going against the simulator itself which had not happened before — except when they were fighting the bug, but even then the connection would be disturbed, not cut off entirely — so Lu Yizhou instinctively knew that something was definitely amiss here.

Lu Yizhou tried to recall the last event he remembered. The three of them were standing before the master bedroom. Ji Yan had just wanted to open the door when something suddenly rushed out to pull them in. Yes, it was the same dark shadows he had seen the previous night. Lu Yizhou could not be mistaken.

Could it be... Were they experiencing the same thing as the two women?

With that doubt in mind, Lu Yizhou tentatively reached out to pinch the tender flesh of his arm. It indeed hurt, but Lu Yizhou noted that the sensation had been dampened. Blurred; almost as if he was put on mild anesthetic or something.

He breathed out through his mouth. Alright, calm down now. He’d better play it by ear until he could sort out his current situation.

So far, Lu Yizhou could not detect anything off with himself other than his muted senses. He started to walk along the white hallway, boots clacking against the smooth floor.

Lu Yizhou had no idea how long he had walked until he suddenly halted in his tracks. Someone was there, a few hundreds meters in front of him.

A woman. Clad in a bright yellow sundress, she was a sight to behold. Her wavy platinum blonde hair draped over her back, yet its lustre could not be compared with the radiance of her smile. The kind of outfit she wore definitely did not exist in this era, Lu Yizhou noted in alarm.

When Lu Yizhou inched closer, he discovered that the woman was staring at him with a soft gaze, almost fondly as though they had known each other forever.

He frowned. "Who are you?"

The woman’s smile faltered. "You’ve forgotten me?"

Something tugged in the back of Lu Yizhou’s memory. Again. He had had the same feeling when he was playing Ella’s favorite song earlier. But he shook his head and reminded himself to remain alert. This world was the bug’s nest, and their specialty was to mess with his mind. He could not fall into their trap.

"Should I remember you?" he asked in a nonchalant tone.

The woman did not hold any weapon, in Lu Yizhou’s observation. Instead, she looked soft, fragile, so relaxed and defenseless as if she knew that Lu Yizhou would not be able to attack her. The frown on Lu Yizhou’s brows deepened.

"Ah... Right, it’s no wonder that you have forgotten me." The woman said, her smile morphing into a wistful one. "Afterall, it has almost been two decades — no, it’s been even longer for you." Her gaze mellowed in affection. "It’s me, silly, your big sister."

Lu Yizhou froze. As if the woman’s words were a cue, the memory which Lu Yizhou had locked firmly deep inside his mind suddenly burst open.

He saw, behind his eyelids, the woman crouching under the bright sunshine, her silhouette blurred along the edges. Smiling at him, she opened her arms wide and cooed softly. "Come on. You can walk. I know you can, little brother."

He saw her, face haggard and cast with exhaustion, forcing a smile as she ruffled his hair. "It’s okay. Everything will be fine. Big sister will protect you." 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

The image shifted again. This time, the smile on her face was desperate, pained yet somehow still as bright as ever. Blood was trickling down her mouth as she forced out through the gurgle on her throat, "It’s okay. Big sister will protect you... You will live. You will live, my beloved brother." She was hugging him tightly in her arms. His tiny body, screaming and struggling. He was crying too, he noticed distantly. Struggling and kicking, he screamed himself hoarse, pleading for her to take him along. He cried and cried, until her heart no longer beat, until her body became unnaturally stiff, until the last breath of life dissipated from her body.

Even then, she did not let him go. Even then, she was still smiling.

Lu Yizhou snapped back to his senses with a sharp gasp. His face was wet and he touched it with trembling hands, bewildered. That... That was...

"You remembered me, didn’t you?" She smiled sadly. "I regretted the day I left you behind. Mom and Dad too, nobody wished to leave you behind. We all regretted it. That day, you asked me to take you along with you." She stretched out a hand. "Now I have come to fulfill your wish. Let’s go, little brother."

Tears welled up in Lu Yizhou’s eyes and he let it trail down his cheek, one drop after another. It was a dusty box of memory, one that he had buried to the deepest recess of his mind. But now, it had forcefully been forced open, the chains shattered to pieces, bringing light to one of the worst days of his life.

His throat closed up painfully as he murmured. "I forgot you... I forgot what you look like, your smile," he raked his gaze all across the woman. In his memory, she had always been the bigger one, always protecting and shielding him from harm. Yet now, she looked small and weak. Lu Yizhou had no doubt if he were to step closer, he would find out that he had already grown two heads taller than her. Had she always looked like this? "I forgot your face..." He ground his jaws tensely and closed his eyes to take a few steadying breaths. "I’ve even forgotten your name..."

Her smile became even brighter, if it was possible. "It’s okay. Big sister doesn’t blame you." Her hand was still there, waiting for him to take it. "Let’s go?"

The pure white space around him suddenly shifted into a land full of blooming flowers. The sky was clear blue and there she was, wearing a flower crown as she called out for him with wind fluttering her long hair. Just like those old good days.

Lu Yizhou closed his eyes and took a step forward, then another.

"Yes, that’s right." Too deep in his thoughts Lu Yizhou was that he failed to realize the malice that flashed through her soft eyes. She whispered in a bewitching tone, "Come to me, little brother."

Lu Yizhou arrived in front of her and offered her a smile. She smiled in return and reached out to grab his hand, except before she did, Lu Yizhou suddenly said,

"Thank you for showing me this beautiful daydream." The smile abruptly froze on her face. As though Lu Yizhou did not notice anything, he continued. "But you’re already in the past. I have already avenged your death. I have already returned your suffering to them a hundred folds and now... I have a future I have to grasp with my own hands."

In the next second, a glittering black scythe appeared in Lu Yizhou’s grip and without a pause, he swung it heavily until the sharp tip pierced through her body and cut her into two! The woman’s face contorted and she let out a shrill scream.

Lu Yizhou’s silver eyes gleamed in determination, cold and dangerous against the dark weapon. "This time, I won’t let anyone take away anyone who is precious to me. Not again."

When Lu Yizhou opened his eyes again, the field of flowers and clear blue sky had disappeared and in its place was a wide and dim bedroom.

In front of him, the broken mannequin fell down like a doll whose strings were cut. From the large cleave on her abdomen, a puff of black smoke floated out before disappearing somewhere beyond the sheer curtain.

If Lu Yizhou were to take the woman’s hand just now, he would definitely be done for. That was a close call!
