Way of Overlord-Chapter 264: Contradiction
Chapter 264: Contradiction
The Yindu people are like this.
The study of heavens relates to the study of life. Life is water. And so, the study of life is the study of water
Where water appears, there would be gras, trees, insects, birds, animals. Ecosystem of life are formed because of water.
It is why even though there is war and there is killing in Yindu, as long as you could find a wise man, you could survive famine, you would not get hungry for long and you would not die of starvation.
A Guru could show them ways to bring about life.
These are the methods of farming, of foresting of turning barrenness into bountiful life.
However, it is clear that while Dama did recruit warriors, he did not recruit wise man among them
But those who he could use, he would use.
In this he is very practical.
And unlike in Aeryon tribe, the Elders would not easily speak to Dama to stop this kind of integration.
Because the price of failure is their head.
Aeryon could be reasoned with.
And so, there is this false sense of security.
With Dama, that sense of security is nowhere to be found for he could smile and laugh with you in one second and in another second he could unsheathe his sword and take your head, while still smiling and laughing.
When Jayeux fund out about the Yindu people joining Dama, that is when he became even more sure that the enemy, the true enemy of the Kan, the obstacle that would be the hardest to remove would be Dama on the East.
Yindu tribe is also known for their expertise in wielding all kinds of weapons. This is a great help to Dama
Dama has these qualities of an overlord, a great hero in chaotic time.
And he uses these foreign people to fight in foreign lands. Any other leader with such composition of an army would have its army in disarray
But Dama could make sure that no dissension arose either among them or against him.
How did he do this?
The mountain tribe is known for their fearsome fighting abilities and their unruly behaviour and not for their discipline.
And it is for these reason that the mountain men is only invincible in the mountain and not when they come down.
The Eastern tribes of the Great Steppe has a long experience dealing with the mountain men.
However, even if they were subdued, they are hard to rein in because they have their own pride and they have their own strength.
Yet, these same people when they are under Dama, follows the lead of this leader of them and would not dare break rank unless Dama himself allows them to go crazy
What about the Yindu people?
These are people who burns their wives when they die and sometimes even bury them alive with them.
They painted their skin with all kinds of colours and uses the heads of their enemies to decorate their totems and their necklaces.
Fearsome, terrifying race of people. And also, Marynku people, Eresian and Ashran people that is already in his army.
None of them are easy for Dama to rein it. But he did it.
Did he preach to them the truth of military strategies? Did he persuade them with words? Beg them?
No, this arose from nothing else this inhuman cruelty toward those who do not listen to his order.
He combined dread and heroism in one method.
Hence, with dread he controls his men, with his bravery, he made himself revered and terrible in the sight of his soldiers
Can he do that without such cruel treatment?
Mayeux would surely believe so.
Jayeux doesn’t believe so.
Without that cruelty, his other virtues were not sufficient to produce this effect.
Jayeux and his teacher once debated about Dama. Like the Kan, his teacher also believe that Dama is quite an opponent.
It is clear from what he has been doing that he also has a great ambition. And his teacher would surely pay attention to such people with ambition
On one hand, his teacher admire Dama deeds. Yet, at the same time, his teacher condemn the principal cause of his deeds
Jayeux had read many stories and military anecdotes, histories and the study of success and failures.
He had seen that sometimes certain virtues, instead of helping the virtuous it would become an impediment.
Ironically enough this example that Jayeux found, it is in the Roma Annals of history.
There is a great general in Roma history.
He is a great general and defeated many enemies of Roma. The most excellent man of Roma that come from the bottom and rose to the top
But even this excellent man of Roma, nevertheless has his own army rebelled against him in a region called Spano
And why does this excellent man find himself being rebelled by his own men?
This arose from nothing but his own great mercy.
Too much forbearance.
Too much patience.
Too much clemency.
The problem was that he gave too much mercy, too much leeway.
This gave his soldiers more license than is consistent with military discipline. For this, this excellent man was upbraided in the Senate by one of the Senator, and called the corrupter of the Roma soldiery.
The Roma could learn a few things from Yan but the Yan could also learns a few things from the Roma
The Roma did not abandon the military discipline and instead each successive generation, they perfected it
Their legions could stand tall and could fight against army who outnumber then and still they would not falter.
Feared trumps being loved.
This is Jayeux thought.
Mayeux of course disagree with this.
He believes that if one day, Aeryon could take the land of Yan, defeat those who are stubborn and uses the talent of the people of Yan, the desire to conquer the world would not be that hard and is even possible
The people of Yan is also many and if they could integrated into the Great Steppe army, then with such quantity of men, who could stop the Steppe army from riding all over the world?
This is the contradiction between the two people.
Jayeux might learn many things from Mayeux but he has his own thoughts.
And Mayeux also realized that even though Jayeux respect him and listen to him for any other matter, he could not change what Jayeux believe.
Mayeux sit down across Jayeux
"You....Haish"
If Aeryon heard that Jayeux had such though, he probably would be tempted to agree with Jayeux on this matter. Because there is such example in his world of things going exactly like this
There is a dynasty in one of the nations in his world. This dynasty was taken by a "barbarian" according to the people of that nation.
They called themselves the people of the dragon.
The arrogance when in fact they grovel under the feet of the strong and when they are strong, they forget all of their high-minded words
This dynasty is even considered to be harmful to the past dynasty of that civilization.
Yet, that dynasty is the open that doubled the size of that nation in the past. It also has a prosperous era. The other dynasties of that nation, that have the same prosperous era is lauded over.
Yet, for this "barbarian" dynasty, even though it had expanded the territory, and for a moment crated prosperous age, they were looked upon with double standards.
In the late years of that dynasty, yes, it declined. So, did the other dynasties in that nation in the past. Yet, they are not judged so severely.
It is nothing more than the anti "barbarian ’sentiment that is played up by nationalist.
Even after all it has done, the people of that nation simply because they viewed it as a humiliation that they were ruled by other people of other races, a race they view as barbarians, they denigrate this dynasty, this barbarian dynasty.
It is because there is such an example in the real world that if Aeryon is here, he probably would even agree with Jayeux.
Mayeux sat in front of Jayeux.
He sighed. Jayeux smiles
"Yan is far away from the Kan plans right now. It is not yet time for him to focus on it"
Jayeux nodded.
"I understand. But the Kan should know that if he employs such method early, it would make more people to come to serve him. There is many great warriors that have gone to Dama. His stance against Yan is clear. But our Kan is different"
Mayeux shakes his head and then said
"Didn’t you see the benefit of having the Yan people slave away for us? The city works, the labour force"
"I see it. But I also see the danger. This race of people could not be trusted. They have proven it time and time again."
He paused for a second before he continued
"They would never accept a rule of a foreign ruler. No matter how good that ruler is because they are not Yan people, the Yan people would never accept it"
Jayeux then snorted and said ƒrēenovelkiss.com
"I could even see it. If the Kan become the Emperor of Yan , there would be all kinds of rebellions. They would use all kinds of slogans like "Expelling the Marynku people" "Expelling the barbarians and so on and so forth". Enemies on all side"
