Chapter 277: Sweet Wine

A few weeks ago, Mukhulai was accompanying an entourage of a squad of ten soldiers. In accompanying these soldiers, he met an old man in their journey

The circumstances of meeting this old man is already very weird, bizarre and surreal

This old man is blind in one eye and ask for a piece of food from him. Not the soldiers. Not the officers.

But him. A slave. A mere messenger. Mukhulai when he sees this old man, he feels pity.

Mukhulai suggested to the old man that if he wanted food, he could ask the soldiers. The soldiers might not be very kind to enemies but they could spare some food

But the old man insisted on asking him.

Mukhulai felt that the old man reminded him of himself in the past and shares a bit of his meat, give him some food, some water, so that the old man could refresh himself.

A law of hospitality is honoured. The old man thank him gracefully, hold his hand and kiss it and then after doing this, he walk away from them.

And he thought nothing of it until a few days ago, he met this old man among the people of the tribe.

At that time Mukhulai was in the market, wanting to buy some supplies, some food and some tools when he noticed the old man walking among the crowd.

He chases after the old man and arrive at a tent a bit further than the main settlement.

A lone tent in the middle of the grassland, not too far away from the main settlement, not too close.

He enters the tent and sees the old man.

The old man smiles at him and invites him in.

before he could even ask the old man how he arrived at the Brolgadhr tribe and ask him what is his purpose, it was then that the old man said to him that he had come to repay that bite of meat, that bite of food, that bit of water.

The old man said that a day later, there would be people coming to bring glad tidings to the Kan

Wait for that messenger and be the first to relay these message and good fortune would follow.

At first, he was very doubtful.

But then he understood what the old man is doing.

This is divining the future and the way he looks at the old man is full of wariness.

Mukhulai once heard stories about deities wandering the mortal world as old wanderers, old crones in distress, a child that is crying and Mukhulai wonders whether that such thing happens to him

But there is also many charlatans and people pretending to be mages of the ancient past.

Mukhulai has a half believing attitude to it and whatever he wanted to say to the old man did not come out of his mouth

And then today it happened.

He waited for a messenger, a messenger came and he relay the news and he is now appreciated by the Kan.

Good fortune has come to him.

But he also knows good fortune could change in an instant. The Gods are fickle and envious.

So, he wanted to speak again to that old man. He wanted to know who is the old man. Why did he tells him all of those things?

Things about the future.....revealing such secrets of the sky has a price. He wondered many thing as he walk toward the tent

And his breath quickened.

His feet move faster. The more question there is in his mind, the more impatient his heart becomes

His pace is now is as the same pace as someone that is running.

And not before long, he arrives at the area, seeing that lone tent in the distance, he did not slow down his running, instead he become even faster.

By now, he is basically running

And in just a few minutes, he arrives in front of that tent, panting as he stand in front of that tent

His eyes is narrowed looking at this tent, and he sighed

He had run all this way just to come here. But when he really arrive in front of the tent, suddenly he stopped and did not do anything.

Like he was recollecting himself.

"Old man, I am here" he announces himself. But he heard nothing. Only the wind of the night, the sound of the grass.

Silence all over.

And his face turns darker

There is a feeling in his heart. An ominous premonition as he rush into the tent and when he look inside the tent, there is shock in his heart.

It is empty.

Truly empty.

Before, when he enter this tent, there is fur carpets and there is all kinds of things hanging from the hangings.

There is cushions and there is blankets and beds.

Thinking about it again, why have he never ask that old man about those peculiarities? Someone who is an outsider has a tent and has all kinds of things that he should not have

But right now, that is not what he should be thinking about.

And he is now too shocked to even think about that matter.

Because all that he sees right now, is an empty tent.

All of those things he had seen before is all gone.

An empty tent, with only the ground as the floor.

And looking at this Mukhulai could not help but gasped

"Did I really met a deity?’ he thought to himself

"or did I meet an ancient mage?"

For a moment he was just standing there, speechless.

But then after a few second, he accepted what had happened

There is still question in his heart but this question will have no answer for now.

He comes out of the tent and look at the sky above him and then he wonders

"What you said about the messenger is true. Then is what you said about my future, is it also true?" he mutters to himself

The old man said that he would one day help the destined one to unite what is broken. He would stand behind this Destined One to be a ruler below one person.

What he understood from that is the old title of Hugan which is equivalate to the Prime Minister.

The old man also said that when the Destined Oen recognise him and recognizes his talent, it would be like putting wings on a tiger.

The old man prophesied that he would open day broke the gates of the Western Zhou and he would life a live of never being defeated in the battlefield

That is why it was hard to believe that old man when he first heard it. He was a slave. He is still a slave.

His world is small and he is like a frog looking at the world from the bottom of the well

How could he believe that one day, he would be such a great man that is talked about in that old man prophecy?

He could not believe it.

But, tonight, when that prophecy of him being appreciated by the Kan comes into being, he began to believe.

And now when he enters this tent and see that there is nobody inside it, he believes it even more.

He looks around at the tent and sees nothing.

But as he was about to go out, and push the flap of the curtain, the moonlight come shining in and he could see that there is something shining on the corner of the tent.

He walk to that area, crouch and see a pendant.

He look at it and smile

"Is this something you left for me? Or is this something you forgot to take away?" Saying this he took the pendant.

His thoughts is quite simple.

If this is something that the old man left for him, then it is not wrong for him to take it.

And if this is something he forgot to take away, then someday, when the old man shows himself again, he could return to this pendant back to him

He took the pedant and put it over his neck

He returns back to his small tent near the large military tent and alone in his tent, he brought out a cup and a bottle of wine outside his tent

He set up a small table as he look at the moon in the sky. He sees the clouds moving, pushed by the wind.

He looks at it and smiles. And then he looks at the wine.

"I promised myself that when there is a good occasional would open this wine and drink it. Tonight, is as good as any" he mutters to himself.

Mukhulai is a slave.

He does not have money to buy such expensive wine.

Nor did he ever have such opportunity to drink such luxuries before.

But his position as a messenger does give him some advantages.

The wine is given to him by some merchants that wanted to bribe him to meet the military commanders. He looks at the wine, uncork the bottle and pour some of it into the glass

Drinking it, looking at the moon, the wind of the Steppe blowing his hair, he smiles. Tonight, it felt different.

Tonight, he felt hope. Tonight, he feels happy. He look at the empty wine cup, chuckles.

"Tonight, it is sweet"

That night that slave has a new name. he look at the moon and sips some wine, and for the first time in his life, the bitter wine feel sweet to him
