Chapter 1: Chapter 1: I Will Be Responsible

Vivian Quinn was dragged into the memorial hall and thrown onto the dead man in the coffin.

The dim candlelight made the dead man’s face appear even paler, and a terrifying, bone-chilling aura emanated from him.

Trembling with fear, Vivian Quinn pushed against his cold, hard chest, trying to climb out of the coffin. But in the next second, the dead man’s eyes flew open, and a pair of strong, powerful hands suddenly seized her by the waist!

"Ah!" Vivian Quinn screamed, her voice trembling. "You... You’re not dead?"

"I can’t die!"

A chilling voice echoed as the man, like an awakened beast, took everything from her.

Pain!

Vivian Quinn gasped, her nails digging fiercely into the muscles of the man’s shoulders.

Torn between terror and pain, she nearly passed out.

By the time it was over, Vivian Quinn was barely conscious.

She heard the man whisper in her ear, "I’ll take responsibility for this."

Vivian Quinn grabbed his head and, before he could react, slammed it hard against the side of the coffin. "Get lost! Just die!"

She shoved the man off her and tried to climb out of the coffin to escape, but her vision suddenly went black, and she lost consciousness.

「 ... 」

When Vivian Quinn woke again, she was completely disoriented, as if she’d lost all track of time. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

She forced open her leaden eyelids. Every inch of her body ached.

’Web novels are no joke!’

’It really does feel like you’ve been run over by a truck!’

"You’re awake?"

A deep, cold voice suddenly spoke beside her, startling her. She shot up in bed, her eyes locking with a man in a wheelchair.

The man wore a perfectly tailored black suit, and his face looked as if it had been divinely sculpted.

He had deep-set features, a high-bridged nose, and unfathomably deep phoenix eyes under sharp brows. Exquisite to the point of perfection, he radiated the noble, powerful aura of a sovereign king.

Vivian Quinn frowned. ’Why does his face look so familiar?’

It took her a moment to collect herself. She quickly looked down to check her clothes. Thankfully, everything was in place. ’Nothing else must have happened.’

"Did you bring me here?" Vivian Quinn demanded. "How dare you kidnap me in broad daylight?"

Jett Sterling said calmly, "I was bringing my wife home. Is there something wrong with that?"

"Are you insane? Who’s your wife?!" Vivian Quinn threw off the covers and got out of bed, forcing herself to walk toward the door despite her aching body.

The man’s deep, magnetic voice followed her. "It seems I didn’t fulfill my duties as a husband properly last night, otherwise you would have remembered me."

Vivian Quinn froze and whipped her head around to face him.

’This is the man from the coffin!’

"So it was you! Don’t worry, I’d know you even if you were burned to ashes!" Blood rushed to Vivian Quinn’s head as she searched for her phone. "Get ready to go to prison for this!"

The man said calmly, "Miss Quinn, you’re the one who came on to me."

"I was set up!" Vivian Quinn suddenly realized. "Tell me," she demanded, "are you in on this with Rachel Quinn? Did you two conspire to set me up?!"

"She isn’t worthy of conspiring with me," the man said coolly. "You’re the one who should be in jail."

Instead of getting angry, Vivian Quinn laughed. "And now you’re trying to pin this on me?"

The man calmly began to unbutton his shirt.

Vivian Quinn quickly covered her eyes. "What are you doing?! Don’t you dare try anything funny!"

"Look at the evidence of your crime."

Vivian Quinn cautiously lowered her hands and saw that the man’s neck was covered in scratches, and his shoulder bore a bite mark.

Vivian Quinn’s face flushed uncontrollably.

’I did all that!’

His long, slender fingers re-fastened the buttons, every gesture exuding an innate nobility. "See clearly now? This many injuries is enough to constitute assault."

Vivian Quinn was speechless.

Vivian Quinn took a deep breath, suppressing the stinging in her eyes. "Fine," she warned viciously, "A wise woman knows when not to pick a fight. I’ll just write this off as getting bitten by a stray dog. But don’t you ever let me see you again, or I’ll beat you every single time!"

She had just opened the door to leave when a loud THUD sounded behind her, followed by the man’s pained groans.

Vivian Quinn turned to see the man had fallen from his wheelchair to the floor, his hands striking his own head in pain.

"What’s wrong with you?" Vivian Quinn walked over. "You’re not trying to scam me, are you? I said I’d hit you, but I haven’t even had the chance!"

"Master Sterling!" Easton Rivers rushed in. "You’re having another attack! I’ll get the doctor!"

Vivian Quinn saw that the man’s face was pale and his forehead was beaded with sweat; he certainly didn’t look like he was faking it.

Realizing something was genuinely wrong, she quickly grabbed his hand to take his pulse.

"Hold still and try to bear it, or I can’t get a reading!"

Jett Sterling stared at the girl before him with bloodshot eyes, gritting his teeth against the pain.

After checking his pulse, Vivian Quinn asked, "Do you have any silver needles?"

Jett Sterling was in too much pain to speak and just pointed a finger at the nightstand drawer.

Vivian Quinn immediately retrieved the silver needles, sterilized them, and inserted them into specific points on the man’s head.

"Master Sterling, the doctor’s here!"

When the doctor saw Vivian Quinn administering acupuncture to Jett Sterling, his face went white with horror. "Are you insane? Master Sterling’s health is invaluable! How can you just casually stick needles in him? If anything goes wrong, can you bear the responsibility?!"

"Stop this instant! I’m going to give Master Sterling a sedative!"

Vivian Quinn shot him a glare. "All sedatives are harmful. His attacks are frequent. If you keep this up, even if it doesn’t kill him, it’ll cause serious problems!"

Not just the doctor, but even Easton Rivers was stunned.

The girl’s aura was overwhelming, and the cold glint in her eyes was strangely familiar... ’Isn’t that the same look Master Sterling has?!’

The doctor collected himself and said, "What are you implying? I am Master Sterling’s personal physician. How dare you question me?"

"I’m not questioning you." Vivian Quinn’s gaze returned to her work as she continued inserting the needles. "I’m invalidating you," she said coolly.

The doctor was speechless.

Easton Rivers was speechless.

"The audacity!" the doctor fumed. "Can’t you see Master Sterling is in so much pain he can barely open his eyes? I have reason to believe you’re trying to harm him. Stop immediately, or I’ll have you thrown out!"

Vivian Quinn remained unfazed.

Just then, the pale man’s thin lips parted, and he slowly spoke, "Get out!"

The doctor was smug. "Did you hear that? Master Sterling told you to get out. So hurry up and scram!"

Easton Rivers cleared his throat and looked at the doctor. "Master Sterling was talking to you."

"..." The doctor was dumbfounded. "That’s impossible!"

Easton Rivers said nothing more and simply escorted the doctor out, then returned to stand guard.

Vivian Quinn was a little surprised. ’He wasn’t telling me to get out?’

’Guess he has some sense after all.’

As she continued her treatment, Jett Sterling gradually calmed, and a bit of color returned to his face.

Easton Rivers was so shocked his jaw nearly hit the floor. ’Master Sterling is... better already?’

’Every other time he’s had an attack, they had to give him a sedative strong enough to knock him out just to make it stop. And he always looked awful when he woke up.’

’And what’s even crazier is that Master Sterling was just saved by the Quinn family’s supposedly useless second daughter, the one they just brought back from the countryside?’

Vivian Quinn removed the silver needles. "He’s stable for now."

Easton Rivers immediately helped Jett Sterling back into his wheelchair, then closed the door and left them alone.

Jett Sterling’s gaze was heavy as he watched the girl before him. "You saved my life. Now I have even more reason to offer myself to you. Marry me!"
