Chapter 145: Chapter 145: Let’s Have a Child

Vivian Quinn hesitated for a moment. "Mrs. Sterling, our past conversations haven’t been very pleasant. Since today is New Year’s Eve, I’d rather we keep things agreeable."

"Did I say I wanted things to be unpleasant?" Wendy Reeves commanded. "Sit."

Vivian Quinn had no choice but to sit down.

"I can see that Jett is very fond of you," Wendy Reeves said, getting straight to the point. "I honestly didn’t expect him to like you this much. In my eyes, there’s nothing particularly special about you, and you really aren’t worthy of him."

Vivian Quinn just smiled faintly, saying nothing.

"Of course, I’m not an unreasonable or biased person. You’re no longer lame or ugly, so in terms of looks, you are indeed a match for Jett. And while you do have a sordid past, our Jett is also disabled and suffers from a chronic illness. So, I suppose I’m in no position to look down on you." Wendy Reeves sighed. "That’s why I’m turning a blind eye and, for now, reluctantly accepting you. You must remember that your next task is to continue the Sterling family line."

Vivian Quinn was at a loss for words.

"Mrs. Sterling, you’ve already spoken to Jett about this. He’s clearly against it and doesn’t even want to discuss it, which is why he turned the conversation back to you."

"I know. That’s why I’m talking to you now." Wendy Reeves took a sip of her soup and spoke unhurriedly. "You’re the one who sleeps beside him. It’s easier for you to use some pillow talk. Besides, your relationship is so good right now. When it comes to having children, you can put in some effort."

Vivian Quinn was speechless.

’If Wendy Reeves knew that she and Jett Sterling had never consummated their marriage, would she have a stroke?’

"Mrs. Sterling, we’re not actually in any hurry to have children."

"Just because you’re not in a hurry doesn’t mean Jett isn’t," Wendy Reeves said sternly. "Don’t forget, Jett is ill. If you don’t hurry up and have a child now, and something were to happen to him, wouldn’t that mean the end of the Sterling family line?"

"Jett Sterling won’t die!" Vivian Quinn stated firmly. "I won’t let him die!"

"I don’t want Jett to die either, but the fact remains that the men of the Sterling family have never been able to escape this fate. That’s why I need to prepare." Wendy Reeves grew sadder as she spoke. "At the very least, if something unforeseen were to happen to Jett, leaving a child behind would give me something to hold on to. Otherwise, I’d rather just die with him..."

Vivian’s nose tingled with emotion. "It’s New Year’s. Let’s not talk about such unlucky things. Please, eat first."

Wendy Reeves sniffled and went back to her noodles. She finished the entire large bowl, down to the very last drop of broth.

Vivian Quinn went to clear the bowl and chopsticks. "I’ll be leaving now."

"What’s the rush? Stay and chat with me for a little while."

"Jett and I made plans to go out."

Wendy Reeves pouted. "How dull. If I’d known, I wouldn’t have come to spend New Year’s with you!"

Vivian Quinn smiled. "You could find something to do. If you need us, we’ll come back."

"Alright, go on then."

Vivian Quinn nodded and quickly left.

Jett Sterling had just finished his meeting. Vivian drove them away from Sycamore Bay herself.

The streets were bustling with life. The two of them went for a drive, soaking in the New Year’s Eve atmosphere of Aethelgard.

"Jett, I’m so happy today." Vivian glanced over at him. "I used to dread the New Year. With the Quinn Family, I never fit in. I’d watch the three of them enjoy their New Year’s Eve dinner, and I’d be sitting there, feeling like a complete outsider."

"So, as soon as dinner was over, I would go to the hospital to see Joy. Even if she was in a deep sleep, I would stay by her side until after midnight before going back."

Jett turned to look at her delicate, lovely profile. "Vivian, this is actually the happiest New Year I’ve ever had, too. In the past, it was always just me and my mom. As you saw, she doesn’t like celebrating it, because every year that passes means I’m one step closer to death."

A sharp pain pierced Vivian’s heart. "She really is terrified of losing you."

"I know that, of course." Jett pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration. "But the more afraid she is, the greater the pressure on me. That’s why I’ve always lived apart from her and kept my distance. For one, I’m not a very emotional person to begin with. For another, I was hoping she’d be able to shift her focus elsewhere."

"Vivian, what I said back at dinner was true. I genuinely hope she can remarry, have more children, and live her own life instead of dedicating her entire existence to the Sterling family."

Vivian pulled the car over to the side of the road and took Jett’s hand. "Jett, I won’t let you die. I absolutely won’t."

Jett returned her a gentle smile. "I believe in you, Vivian. I won’t die. I’ll grow old with you."

"Mhm."

BOOM!

A magnificent firework blossomed in the sky!

Vivian was thrilled. "Jett, look! It’s so beautiful!"

"Yeah."

More fireworks bloomed, creating a spectacular, beautiful rain of light.

Vivian and Jett watched the beautiful scene, their fingers tightly interlaced.

She glanced over at Jett, only to find his gaze fixed on her face.

"Why are you looking at me instead of the fireworks?"

"You’re more beautiful than the fireworks."

Vivian Quinn laughed. "Mr. Sterling, you’re such a sweet-talker."

"Vivian." Jett’s expression suddenly turned serious. "Let’s have a child."

Vivian Quinn froze.

"Why so suddenly?" Then, she remembered something. "Are you doing this because you feel bad for your mother? To grant her wish?"

"Of course not." He raised a hand to stroke her face. "I just want us to have a child of our own. Vivian, I need to know if you’re ready."

Vivian froze, a blush creeping up her face to the tips of her ears. "I... I don’t know..."

"You haven’t thought about it, have you?"

Vivian nodded faintly.

"Vivian." Jett lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it. "You don’t need to be conflicted. If I’m the one who wants a child, then I’ll be responsible for them. I’ll take good care of you, and I’ll take good care of our child."

Vivian’s mind was a mess. "I really haven’t thought about it..."

"So you’re not ready yet, is that it?" Jett hesitated before asking, "Is it because of your past?"

Vivian shook her head. "I’m not insecure about my past anymore. I just... never considered having a child so suddenly."

"Sorry, I’m being too hasty." Jett smiled. "So much has happened lately, and I almost lost you. It’s made me more desperate to make our family feel a little more complete."

Vivian considered it seriously for a moment before saying, "Jett, I’m not against us having a child, but now isn’t the right time. I need to focus on researching your condition. I can’t afford any distractions."

"Okay. I’ll listen to you."

"I know you respect me, but..." Vivian’s face grew even redder, her voice becoming so quiet it was little more than a murmur. "We’re already married. If you want to... well..."
