Wedding Night: My Disabled Husband Made Me Cry-Chapter 189: Paying It Back Double
Jett Sterling had dinner with Vivian Quinn and then went to his study to handle work. Just as Vivian was about to go for a walk in the garden, a maid came in to report, "Ma’am, the young master is back."
"Elle’s back?" Vivian’s face lit up. "Bring him in, quickly!"
"Vivian!" Elle came through the door, let go of Vincent Wentworth’s hand, and bolted toward Vivian.
Vivian crouched down and caught him in a big hug. "Elle, I’ve missed you so much."
"I missed you too, Vivian!" Elle complained tearfully. "Mommy hit me. I don’t like her anymore!"
Vivian was alarmed. "How did she hit you? Did she hurt you?"
"She hit my bottom."
Just as Vivian was about to check, a calm, strong voice sounded beside her. "I’ve already checked. He was wearing thick clothes, so he isn’t hurt."
Vivian looked up and saw Vincent Wentworth’s handsome face.
She stood up. "You’re the one who brought Elle here?"
"Yes. The boy was upset and crying to see you."
"But he’s Shirley Wentworth’s son. She might not want him staying here at Sycamore Bay."
"You don’t have to worry about that. If you’re willing to have him, Elle can stay. I’ll make things clear with Shirley; she won’t object."
"Of course I’m willing!" Vivian’s lips curved into a smile. "Thank you, Mr. Wentworth."
"Miss Quinn, could I have a word with you in private?"
"Of course." Vivian handed Elle to Nanny Jenner. "Please serve some tea."
"Yes, Ma’am."
The two went to the side parlor and sat down. After serving the tea, Nanny Jenner tactfully excused herself and left.
"Mr. Wentworth."
"Miss Quinn."
They spoke at almost the same time, then stopped, sharing a smile.
"You first," Vivian said.
"Besides bringing Elle here, I also came today to apologize to you. The banquet that night was hosted by the Wentworth Family, so everything that happened is our responsibility."
Vivian replied, "Mr. Wentworth, I’m not an unreasonable person. Jett told me there’s concrete proof that Shirley Wentworth drugged me, and she’s already admitted to it herself. As for the other things that happened, that was due to my own personal matters. It has nothing to do with the Wentworth Family."
Vincent said apologetically, "Shirley’s actions were too extreme; she nearly caused you great harm. As for the other matter, Miss Quinn... I want to say that you shouldn’t think so little of yourself. There are many things in this world we can’t choose. You were the victim. You are not the one at fault."
Vivian hadn’t expected him to say something like that. She was taken aback for a moment. "Thank you. I feel the same way."
Vincent smiled. "It seems our values are well-aligned."
Vivian gave a noncommittal response. "By the way, I went back to the hotel to look for that injured kitten. The staff said you took it. Is that true?"
"You went to so much trouble to save it; I couldn’t just let it fend for itself. I took it home, had a vet treat its injuries, and it’s almost completely healed now."
Vivian said, "Jett doesn’t like having cats or dogs in the house, so I can’t keep it here. But I’ve already found a place for it. I was planning to board it at a pet store, and then once my sister, Quinnie, gets out of the hospital, she would take it home."
Vincent raised an eyebrow. "Miss Quinn, I had a hand in saving this kitten, too. Couldn’t I be the one to keep it?" 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶
"You?" Vivian was surprised. "You’d keep it?"
"Aren’t I already?"
"I thought you were just looking after it for a few days."
"If you’re comfortable with it, you can leave it with me. You’re welcome to come see it anytime you want."
Vivian hesitated for a moment before nodding. "As you said, you helped save it, so of course you have a right to adopt it. In that case, thank you."
"There’s no need to thank me."
Vivian smiled. "Please, have some tea."
"Alright." Vincent took a sip of the hot tea. "Miss Quinn, with Elle staying here, I’m afraid taking care of him will be a lot of work for you."
"Elle is Jett’s son. We’ll do everything we can to take good care of him, so you don’t have to worry."
"I can tell you’re very fond of Elle."
"Elle is bright and adorable; anyone would like him." Vivian then recalled something. "I don’t understand why Shirley would hit him today. I need to know what happened so I can explain it to Elle properly and prevent it from leaving a mark on him."
Vincent sighed. "To be honest, I’m not sure. My sister can be headstrong, but her emotions are usually stable. It’s not like her to lose control and hit a child. How about this: I’ll find out what happened when I get home and let you know."
Vivian nodded. "Since this is about Elle, it would be best to get a clear answer."
"You’re very thoughtful, Miss Quinn."
"You’re too kind, Mr. Wentworth."
The door to the parlor was suddenly pushed open, and Jett Sterling wheeled himself in.
"Jett," Vivian said, standing up. "Mr. Wentworth is here."
"Mm," Jett said, looking at her warmly. "Why don’t you go play with Elle? I’m going to have a chat with Vincent."
"Okay." Vivian gave a polite nod. "Mr. Wentworth, please make yourself comfortable. I’ll take my leave now."
"Alright."
Once Vivian had closed the door behind her, Jett Sterling wheeled himself over. "What brings you here all of a sudden?"
"I brought Elle over."
"Is that so?" Jett’s lips curled into a faint smile. "Are you sure you aren’t just using Elle as an excuse to cheer Vivian up and, in turn, get me to cool off?"
"Jett, we’ve known each other since we were kids. You really do know me well." Vincent got straight to the point. "I am, in fact, here to apologize. To Miss Quinn, and to you."
"What Shirley Wentworth did to my wife can’t be resolved with a simple apology. And as for that father and son at the banquet—regardless of who arranged for them to be there—it was the Wentworth Family’s event, which means you’re inextricably linked to it."
Vincent spoke slowly. "I heard you’ve been interfering with several of the Wentworth Family’s most important projects this year. Is there truly no room for negotiation on this matter?"
"Did I say I was only interfering with a few projects?" Jett sneered. "Going after my wife comes with a price. A price you can’t afford to pay."
Vincent closed his eyes. "What do you want?"
"You know how I operate. When someone owes me, they pay it back double."
"No!" Vincent said at once. "Shirley’s actions were out of line, and she certainly deserves to be taught a lesson. But she is a Wentworth, after all. If she’s punished like that, the Wentworth Family can’t afford that kind of humiliation."
"That’s a problem for the Wentworth Family. As I’ve said, you need to give me a satisfactory resolution to this matter."
"Jett, for Elle’s sake—since she is his birth mother—let her off the hook this one time."
The man’s icy gaze locked onto his face as he spoke, enunciating every word. "I don’t care who it is. If they hurt my wife, I won’t let it slide. It doesn’t matter who they are or who’s asking."
Vincent nodded. "I understand now how important Miss Quinn is to you. But my position is also clear. The Wentworth Family’s honor is at stake, and I can’t let my sister be subjected to this."
Jett’s lips curled. "And you think if I refuse to back down, your Wentworth Family will have any honor left to speak of?"
