Welcome To Hell, Dear Wife-Chapter 68: Pack Politics
Elias felt the realization hit him like a physical blow to the chest. He couldn’t believe it.
She doesn’t know?
He could easily tell that her confusion was completely genuine and not an act all. She truly didn’t understand what alpha meant at all
She was living in an estate full of wolves and didn’t even know it?
She thinks they were all human like her?
Elias looked at her all Curled up on his sofa like that was exactly where she belonged. She looked so small and breakable In a way that made his chest ache.
Her beauty was so surreal and was one that he found himself admiring at any given time he had with her.
He had been captivated since he found her in a movie and now more enthralled on seeing her for the first time ghat very first day. The defiant glint in her eyes contradicted every spoiler and shallow story that he has had heard about Lorena Sanders and he now understood why he was so captivated by some actress.
He had felt this surge of protectiveness since that day that he went into her room and it’s refused to leave him.
And now he could hardly be live that she really didn’t know the most important secret about her husband or even all of them.
The thought almost made him angry. Why on earth would Lucas keep her in the dark like this?
Was this yet another strategic move from him as usual?
Even at that, it all just seem like cruelty to him no matter what.
"What do you mean? He asked as if stalling for time while his mind screamed as much as it wanted to. His voice even came out very much neutral without giving anything away.
It was just weird that she didn’t know they we can run of four legs and that her husband could smell her fear properly... that Everyone in this estate could tear her apart if they so wanted.
It was a crucial information, at least to make sure she knows she needs to walk on eggshells.
"Know what?" Lorena’s voice was small and now laced with so sort of suspicion and wariness.
She was even now pulling back from him and he could see that plainly, the way her body language was closing off.
Elias felt like he was being torn into two.
He so badly wanted to tell her what she clearly needed and wanted to know but then it also felt like it would be a betrayal of pack law since Lucas himself has refused to tell her, who knows if that would even be some sort of direct challenge to Lucas’ authority.
But then he couldn’t stomach how it felt like watching someone walk blindfolded toward a cliff and doing nothing to stop it.
"Lucas should have just told you." The words burst out of him before he could stop them, fueled by anger on her behalf and frustration with his alpha.
Lorena shrank back against the sofa cushions like a wounded animal.
And Elias quickly backtracked frantically with his hands out.
"Uhm, it might not be understandable to you but whenever you end up getting told, you should know that we’re not exactly monsters or anything. You need to understand that first. Okay?"
But even as the words left his mouth, he knew that they were useless because vague reassurances meant nothing.
But then what else was he supposed to say?
We are wolves and the man you married is the apex and most dangerous of us all?
While he dwelled on this, he hadn’t noticed the door opening until the familiar voice that he knew too well spoke. "Elias?"
He looked at the entrance to see his mother standing at the doorway as she took in the scene in one sweeping glance. At him and then the visibly shaken Lorena sanders.
And he could immediately tell that he needed to stop her before she goes wild like Sienna because if there’s anyone who hates Lorena sanders so much, his mother would surely be their leader.
"Hello," Lorena offered in a whispery voice, she was clearly just trying to be polite even though she clearly knew his mother didn’t like her.
Their first breakfast together was proof of that after all.
Victoria ignored her completely like she wasn’t even there. Like she was just a piece of furniture that didn’t deserve acknowledgement.
Her laser focused contempt was aimed solely at Elias.
"My room. Now!"
The words were low yet absolutely final like that of a woman who expected instant obedience.
She turned on her heel without waiting for a response and marched down the hallway.
Elias shot Lorena a quick look of apology before following his mother.
And the moment the door closed behind them, Victoria white led around with the speed of a striking snake.
"Have you lost your damn mind?" Her voice was sharp enough to cut through glass. "How dare you entertain that thing in my house."
"It’s my house too, mother." Elias crossed his arms as if to grace for the fight that he could already foresee. "And she was attacked, okay? Sienna went after her with salt."
"I do not care if a dragon attacked her!" Victoria’s voice rose to a shout. "That is Gregory sanders’ daughter! The bitch that we’re all going to have to tear apart eventually! Or is this your own grand strategy to become alpha? By comforting the enemy?"
Elias was tired of the old argument seeping through into even something like this again.
He ran a hand through his hair as that familiar frustration built. "For the last time, mother, I do not want to be alpha! Lucas is the leader and he was born for it. Bred for it even! He’s a better alpha than I could ever be and I have absolutely no desire to challenge him!"
Victoria scoffed unable to stop her hand that was twitching like it needed to hit something. "You’re week and spineless! Just like your father was. Lucas is out there securing our future, expanding our territory, making deals that’ll set us up for generations to come and you’re in her doing what? Playing nursemaid to a dead woman walking!"
Her phone sitting on her bed vibrates with an angry buzz and the screen lit up to reveal the caller ID in bright letters.
Aurelian.
Elias brow furrowed immediately.
That was the third time this week, maybe the fourth even that he knew of.
Why was uncle Aurelian who was supposed to be Lucas most loyal ally and right hand man calling his scheming and ambitious mother so frequently?
Last he checked, they didn’t even have any business together.
Victoria snatched the phone off the bed as he expression shifted from fury to that of pleasantness so fast that it was almost disturbing to watch even for her son.
"This conversation is not over," she hissed at him while pointing one manicured finger in his face. "We will discuss your pathetic lack of vision when I return."
She then started to walk out the room while heading straight for the back door and already answering the phone in a sickly sweet tone that made Elias’ skin crawl.
"Aurelian darling..."
Her voice faded as she stepped outside and closed the door behind her.
Elias could not turn of the red light twitching over and over at the side of his head.
Something was wrong, this made no sense. His mother used to hate Uncle Aurelian as much as uncle Aurelian used to hate his mother so much too.
So why on earth was he calling her frequently?
Elias could however do nothing other than shake his head to try and clear the dark thoughts forming in them.
He couldn’t deal with pack politics right now. He had immediate concerns.
Lorena.
He just remembered that he he left her alone in the living room and she must be so frightened and confused right after his mothers obvious venomous entrance.
So he rushed back to the living room as a heartfelt apology already started to form on his lips. "Lorena, I am so sorry about that. My other is just-" 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
But the room was empty. Lorena had left.
