What Do You Mean I Have To Comprehend Dao As A Mortal God?-Chapter 104: They Build Fast
You know... I was thinking that they might be exaggerating with the speed of their building...
But I spent one night sleeping on the island and the next morning, I saw a structure in the horizon that wasn’t there before.
It took me a moment to realise that the structure I was seeing was the lower floors of the tower that the Bunarfs were building as our new HQ.
Curious of how much progress they made, I opened up a teleportation door and jumped through it to appear on that part of the island.
When I emerged, I found myself standing at the base of a building where the foundations were already properly laid out and the Bunarfs were building up the skeleton of the tower, their progress already high enough where I have to tilt backwards to see the top of the skeleton.
Despite the fact that it was barely sunrise, there were still people working on the building.
Did they work through the entire night?
Just as I wondering about that, a figure hopped down from the top of the tower and started manoeuvring between the metal skeleton to hop down to the ground floor, the figure then blurring towards me and stopped in front of me.
"Qi... Qing! You’re here! Good morning!" Maylene greeted, the blonde haired bunnygirl hopping up and down excitedly.
"Good morning," I greeted back before looking at the construction going on behind her. "Did you girls not sleep at all?"
"Oh! We’re working in shifts right now! We want to finish this as fast as possible after all!"
"I mean... That’s fine and all but... I think you should at least rest? And also be safe? I don’t want to hear about anyone collapsing just to work on this, you know?"
She waved her hand, "You don’t need to worry about that, Qing! This isn’t the first time we are working on a big construction project after all! Besides... This is basically the only thing that we can do right now. Aside from some fabrication jobs and maintenance of the camp, we don’t really have anything else to do. That’s why everyone is happy that we got a job like this where we can work to feel fulfilled!"
I frowned, "Feel fulfilled? Wait... Are you telling me that if your people don’t have anything to do... They feel pointless?"
"Of course! That’s what life is about isn’t it? Is it different for the people in this World?"
"I mean... Do you have rest days? You know? Days when you take a break?"
"Oh, of course!"
Oh good... I was afraid that she might tell me that their entire race of Bunarfs were just workaholics and--
"On those days, we do something relaxing like guard duty or maybe sewing and other craft works~"
...
You know... I would have accepted the craft work as something that is relaxing but the fact that she lumped guard duty on the same level as that, I’m not even sure anymore...
And this also basically confirmed my fears that they are basically a bunch of workaholics.
"Don’t you girls get tired of work?" I asked.
She tilted her head, "Eh? Why would we get tired of seeing something being created with our own two hands?"
Ah... Ok, I think I can understand how their civilisation functions I suppose. They probably have a culture of creating and building stuff so they’re used to always making things.
It’s to the point of obsession where if they don’t work on something, they actually do not feel at ease.
I’m not sure if this was something that was already present in their civilisation or they grew into it because they had to hide from the Anomalies in that chasm of theirs.
Because I could also see them developing this mentality over the ten years they were trapped in that chasm since it would at least distract them from the crushing weight of being trapped in their hideout.
Still...
"You at least get physically tired, right?" I pointed out, nodding in the direction of the other Bunarfs who were still working. "How many people do you have working on this?"
"Hmm... We divided ourselves into four shifts so we’re working six hours a day here. Counting the people back at the base camp, we have about eighty to ninety of us working on building this each shift. On that note, it’s fortunate you have the same time keeping as we do so it was easy to adapt to that~"
Huh... In other words, there’s at least three hundred Bunarfs working on building this thing and they basically got the place a quarter done in just twenty four hours...
At this rate, they’ll be done with it by the end of the week.
Another question then came to mind, "Wait... This is definitely going to draw attention especially from the boats that are passing by. They’re definitely going to see you girls working on this building... Are we even trying to hide it?"
Maylene grinned at me, "Oh you don’t need to worry about that! We’ve deployed an optical barrier around the edge of the island that’s facing the sea!"
I blinked at her, "A what?"
"An optical barrier! Here!"
She reached into the bag she was carrying behind her back and fished out a small cube shaped object which she dropped on the ground.
The object then expanded to turn into some kind of privacy screen which she quickly unfolded to expand it until it reached me in height and was wide enough that it would cover me even if I were to stretch out my arms.
Even though I call it a privacy screen, it was completely transparent so I could see Maylene on the other side fiddling with a box that she pulled out of her bag.
I was wondering how this was supposed to help until the screen suddenly fizzled and it changed to show a piece of empty land.
Not only had Maylene disappeared, the part of the tower that had been visible was now also gone.
I immediately understood what this was.
"You’re projecting a photorealistic projection on this side of the screen to hide the tower?" I asked.
She peeked out from behind the screen, "Ehehehe~ That’s right! I had to deploy these during my expeditions sometimes when I’m out scavenging so these were a crucial part of my gear!"
"Ah, to prevent Anomalies from wandering into places you don’t want it to go I take it?"
"Yeah, but it’s only good against the smaller Anomalies though, as the larger ones seemed to know its fake and will try to crush it."
I wonder if it’s because of the Commander Class Anomaly controlling them to do so?
I looked behind the tower and I realised that sure enough, there were quite a number of these privacy screens that were set up at the edge of the island.
On our side, however, it was still transparent so I could easily see what’s on the other side.
That’s the reason why I didn’t even notice it at the start since the only indication they were there were the really thin lines between each of the screens that were borders of the privacy screens.
I frowned, "There’s only a few of them though? Do you not have enough to match the height of the tower?"
"Oh, we don’t actually need to build it as high as the tower, Qing! The sea is at a lower elevation so the people on the boats passing by would need to look up to see the island.. We just need to match the highest angle with the furthest point out to sea for this to work~ And Miss Olivia did mention that we would eventually be going public with this tower anyway so once we are about halfway done with it, there would be no need to hide anymore!"
I’m more concerned about the fact that people figure out we have a new group of other worlders living in our world but I guess the plan was to not try to hide them at all and let things play out naturally.
So when the time comes that the public finds out about the bunny girls, it wouldn’t matter anymore.
By that, I mean that we would be able to integrate the bunny girls into our society well enough that the public won’t be able to take advantage of them as easily.
Especially considering the fact that they have access to a higher level of technology so there’s definitely countries out there who would want to get them on their side.
For now, the plan was to have them work for us and get more other worlders here so our innovations look to be contributions from everyone instead of being just from them.
Speaking of which... I wonder how’s the recruiting going?
Last I heard, Olivia was already planning to ship in another group of other worlders to be added to the work force here...
Where is she?
