Chapter 783: Pilot Simulator Interview

We followed her towards the building and I still had no idea what this was about.

The drones followed alongside us, their cameras all focused on us.

It certainly feels a little disconcerting with all of them just staring at us silently while floating around us.

Theresa led us to the entrance of the building and there was a console panel at the side of the door which she had to scan her face on before the door slid open.

Behind the door was a large glass sphere with a path surrounding said sphere. Inside said sphere was what looked like a white marble chair and nothing else.

It kind of made me think of a torture chamber for some reason.

Theresa waited for all of us to walk past the doorway before she went up to another console that rose up from the ground to start manipulating the controls on it.

The door closed behind us and the entire building seemed to change as parts of the wall started to detach itself to start rotating around the glass sphere, revealing the interior of the building was made up of hexagonal panels.

Interestingly, the panels were floating around the sphere and were suspended in midair without anything holding them up and the first thing I thought of was that there was Psionic energy involved.

Then I realised that was a dumb assumption and it’s most likely to do with magnets or something.

Railings then rose up from the ground around us, cutting us off from the doorway.

"Please hold on to the railings, Miss Tera and company. The path will be lifting up."

We did as she asked though I was a little confused about what she meant by that.

It became clear when the ground beneath us rumbled and it started to rise up from the ground, the path breaking into multiple sections before stopping halfway up the sphere.

The floor then extended to connect them together with the other sections that had been split up earlier, forming a viewing platform that surrounded the sphere.

A part of the glass sphere that was in front of us then slid open and a ramp extended towards the marble looking chair at the centre of the glass sphere.

Ok, this really looks weird.

I turned to Theresa, wondering what this is all about.

She turned to face me and all the drones gathered behind her, focusing on our group.

"Miss Tera! I would like to welcome you to our pilot simulator! This is one of our finest simulators in the Outer Colonies!"

Oh... So that’s what it was...

I mean... The simulator I was used to looked more like a pod, you know? And since they’ve brought me here, I figured out what they want from us.

I crossed my arms, "Let me guess... You want us to take turns trying out the simulator to show your bosses that we are worth the resources that you would be using to hire us before you officially hire us?"

She nodded, "As expected of a platinum ranked Mercenary! That is exactly right, Miss Tera!"

I shrugged, "Not that I mind but... I do want to know what’s the difference between this one and the pod version? This entire thing looks really unnecessarily elaborate for a simulator."

"I’m glad you asked, Miss Tera! Unlike normal simulators that function on projecting the simulation in a virtual space, this one is actually a physical simulator!"

...

"What?" I couldn’t help but blurt out.

What the hell does that even mean? A ’physical simulator’? Do you just mean like piloting an actual Exo-Knight to practice or something? Because that’s what a physical simulator is, isn’t it?

Theresa smiled at me, "I understand your confusion but you will find out what the difference is when you use it. Please trust me."

I don’t know why but that sounded more ominous than reassuring...

Yumiko turned to me, "Should I test the machine out first, Mistress?"

I considered it for a moment before shaking my head, "It’s fine. I’ll do it."

As I stepped towards the ramp that would lead me down towards the centre of the glass sphere, I paused and turned back to Theresa.

"Would all of this be recorded?"

Theresa seemed surprised by my question before she gestured towards herself, "Do not worry, Miss Tera! This is a live stream that will not be recorded! We do not wish to leave something that our competitors are able to steal after all!"

Err... I’m not sure how calling it a live stream will assure me that it won’t be recorded since it’s a form of recording itself...

I’ll just operate under the assumption that they are recording me I guess.

That means I can’t use the Psionic controls for the cockpit I guess...

I’m assuming the chair would let me choose the control methods since I don’t exactly see anything around the chair itself and I assume they would form around the chair once I sit down on it.

I made my way down to the chair and sat down on it, expecting it to hold my way like a solid piece of stone only for the seat to sink in as I lowered myself into it.

I looked down and realised that instead of it being a singular piece of stone, it was made up of individual cubes and they conformed around my butt and back to support me ergonomically.

It’s... Actually pretty comfortable.

Arm rests even rose up from the sides with the white cubes flowing out of the sides of the chair like it was a liquid.

As I settled into this chair that felt like a more comfortable bean bag, the floor around me started to sink into the ground revealing that the building actually extended further underground.

They left me with just a circular platform while the rest of the floor broke apart into the same white cubes and started floating around the air, filling the space with those white cubes.

A sort of stand then appeared in front of me and it turned out to be a menu to let me choose what Exo-Knight and control schemes I would like to use.

Theresa’s voice then came from the seat behind me and I realised there were built in speakers in the char I was sitting on.

"Testing, testing~ Can you hear me, miss Tera?"

"I can hear you if you can hear me."

"Perfect~ Yes I can hear you, miss Tera! Seems like everything is working as it should~ Ahem... As you might have figured out, we are using these cubes to transform into physical manifestations of the simulation. So every weight and movement can be simulated to near perfect accuracy without needing to worry about the cost of using actual Exo-Knights and risk damaging them."

I don’t know what the cost difference is in using an Exo-Knight as compared to a simulator like this because it certainly feels like this would be pretty expensive by itself... So I kept my mouth shut and just nodded.

Theresa continued, "For now, we would be having you run some simulations with this so feel free to pick any Exo-Knight you might want to use from the screen, miss Tera!"

I made a face, "I mean... I would have a better idea on which one to choose if I know what I will be doing, you know? Is this going to be a combat simulator or will there be other situations involved?"

"Please operate under the assumption that anything could happen, miss Tera. We would like to see how you would deal with any kind of situation that you might meet."

Hmm... In that case...

I scrolled down on the screen until I found the Squire model of their Exo-Knight which I remember Ries saying was their all rounder type.

As for the control scheme... I just went for the normal controls and the moment I tapped on the confirm button at the bottom of the screen, the entire space began to change.

The white cubes around me started assembling themselves around me and they reconstructed themselves into the cockpit of an Exo-Knight as well as the control schemes I had selected.

Judging by the sounds happening outside, they might also be transforming into an actual Exo-Knight around me as well.

Sure enough, when the screens in front of me activated, I saw the cubes flying towards me to form into the hands of the Exo-Knight to finish the transformation process.

The sphere that I had initially thought to be made of glass then turned black before they seemed to fade away from existence, making it look like I was in a completely white space and no longer in the spherical building anymore.

"It seems like there are no issues with the startup, please go ahead and warm up yourself first, miss Tera! We will be starting shortly!"

Alright then... I’m not sure what they want to see here but I need to show them what I’ve got here!
