What Do You Mean I'm The Captain Of A Yandere Mercenary Company?-Chapter 791: Insurgents In Inner Colonies
We weaved through another mass of HoloBuoys to reach another Warp Gate, this one meant to send us to a further system that we would then use to jump to a system that is owned by Crusaders Inc.
Apparently if you have enough money, you can buy out an entire system and own it like you own a piece of land.
Well... That’s the least surprising thing I’ve heard so far to be honest.
Unlike the previous system where the Warp Gate was located near a major traffic location, this Warp Gate was relatively far from anything else.
Which meant that while there were still HoloBuoys floating around the Warp Gate, we only needed to travel out a little further before we found ourselves in familiar, empty space once again.
Apparently this was one of the systems that some other company had bought over and was using it to house their production facilities.
This was a desolate system with a single barren planet which orbited a white dwarf.
The planet itself was barely visible as it was surrounded by several orbiting satellite stations that I assumed were production facilities belonging to the company.
Our ships turned towards the next Warp Gate and we started charging our Travel Drives, preparing to launch ourselves in the direction of the next Warp Gate.
I turned to the side where Yumiko was seated at the communications console, "Yumiko?"
She immediately turned towards me, her tail wagging behind her excitedly, "Yes, Mistress?"
"Could you ask Theresa to confirm on how long we would be travelling again?"
"Of course, Mistress~"
As Yumiko turned back to the console, a sudden flash of light came from one of the stations that was hovering above the barren planet.
I turned my gaze towards that direction, only to realise that the light came from the station being engulfed in an explosion that broke the entire station apart.
I blinked at the sight, wondering if I was mistaken before realising I wasn’t.
"What is going on there?!" I cried out, drawing Renata’s and Yumiko’s attention towards the explosion.
Renata didn’t seem too bothered by the sight, "Maybe it’s an industrial accident or something, Daddy~"
As soon as she said that, my console started letting out a warning about a distress call.
I tapped on the screen, prompting a new window to open up where a voice only recording started to play.
"This is an emergency message being broadcasted in the station EZ-Three-One-One, located in the Travin system! We are under attack from insurgents! Please help us! There are insurgents attacking us! I repeat, there are insurgents attacking us!!"
I frowned at the message, "What? I thought the Inner Colonies was supposed to be safer? What the heck are these insurgents?"
I turned to Yumiko as she made a face at me, "To put it bluntly... There are still people who do not support the current government and have formed into a rebellion group within the Inner Colonies."
"So they’re... Rebels then?"
"Yes, Mistress. It’s a known saying that in the Outer Colonies, you have the pirates and in the Inner Colonies, you have the insurgents."
Geez... And here I thought that travelling within the Inner Colonies would guarantee that we were always safe... Guess space is never peaceful...
Right then, Yumiko’s call connected to Theresa’s ship and the sales rep’s voice came through the communications console.
"Hello~ I’m receiving you~ Is there a problem?"
Yumiko immediately answered her, "The system is under insurgent attack right now. They’ve already destroyed a station."
"What?!!" Theresa screeched.
Her voice was replaced by panicked footsteps as she most likely was trying to look out of her ship’s window to confirm what Yumiko had informed her of.
She must have also seen the remains of the destroyed station as her panicked voice returned soon after.
"We have to inform the military!! Quickly!" She cried out.
"They have already sent a distress beacon so they should be on their way here. But most likely not before destroying another station."
There was a pause before Theresa gasped, "You’re not suggesting..."
Yumiko turned to me, "Mistress..."
We could, of course, just run away from here but if we could deal with them... That would also mean a big payday, right?
I tapped on my console, "Can we do a scan of the area?"
Renata gave a cute salute, "On it, Daddy!"
A long range pulse was fired from our ship, propagating outwards and showing me the results on my screen.
My screen was then filled with a mix of dots that were blue and red in colour, the blue ones most likely representing the defense force of this system while the red ones were the insurgents.
I did a quick count to find that there were sixteen ships in total and they must have been responsible for the destruction of the first station as they were in the midst of shooting at a second station.
From what I can tell, these insurgents were mainly piloting B and C class ships.
"What are our chances?" I asked.
Yumiko came over to me and looked at the screen that showed the map of the sector.
She seemed to be doing a quick mental calculation before she turned to nod at me, "We should be able to provide fire support from a distance without directly engaging them. That would at least take the pressure off from the defense forces and buy time for the military to arrive." 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
I nodded, "We can do that then. Would that be alright with you, Theresa?"
"Ah... Ah... I suppose it is our duty as people of the UTG to deal with these rebels..." She sputtered.
I chuckled, "It’s fine, Theresa, we will only be firing at them from a distance. We won’t be participating in the fight up close."
"Umm... Please be careful!"
I’m not sure if she was saying that so that we don’t put her in danger or she doesn’t want a potential investment slash asset like myself to be lost here.
Either way, I had already made up my mind to take part in this so I signalled to Yumiko to end the call before turning to my console.
I pressed the button to sound the battle stations alarm, broadcasting it throughout the ship and calling my girls to man their stations.
"Get us within range of them, Renata," I ordered.
"Aye, aye, Daddy!!" She saluted cheerfully, undocking our ship from Theresa’s before we spun towards the battle.
From here, I could still see the flashes of explosions as the insurgents attacked the stations orbiting above the planet, the defenders putting up a valiant defence despite the overwhelming odds.
It was clear the defence forces here were not equipped to fight a force of this size as the only ships I see flying out amongst them were mostly A Class and B Class ships.
They had to rely on the defense platforms on the stations but those had blind spots that they could not target and the insurgents were making full use of that to avoid being shot down.
"Why are they even targeting this place anyway? Isn’t this owned by a private company? These insurgents should be targeting the government instead, right?" I asked.
Renata turned back, "This place belongs to Aelor Refineries, Daddy! They refine raw materials into other usable materials such as armour plating and bullets which the military would use~"
Oh... I guess they were aiming to try and cripple the supply lines to give themselves a better chance at trying to overthrow the government.
That brings up another question.
"Why aren’t the nobles dealing with them, then? Are they expecting to be able to overthrow the nobles as well?"
Yumiko shrugged, "I don’t know, Mistress. I suppose you could just say that these people are suicidally stupid. Perhaps they just believe if they fight hard enough, they would still win regardless."
"Oh... I thought for sure you would tell me they managed to work a deal out with them or something?"
"That shouldn’t be possible because one of the reasons why the insurgents are fighting was to overthrow the nobles and strip them of their power. Perhaps they have some kind of secret weapon that works really well against Psionics but it’s a fact that the government has rarely deployed a Psionic against the insurgents. Some believe that it would only further their cause if a noble was sent to quell their uprising and people become sympathetic to them."
I wanted to say that sounds like a stupid decision but I can see that happening.
Oh well... I don’t really think we’d be involved with this that deeply anyway. This is all just good business right now~
Soon enough, my girls flooded into the room and Lea immediately jumped onto the weapons console, powering up the guns right as we got within firing range of the insurgents.
"I have target lock, Mistress," Lea announced.
I nodded at everyone to confirm we were ready.
"Fire at will."
