When Love is a Question Mark-Chapter 243: Between Trust and Turmoil
Zinnia nodded, still unable to find the right words to express the whirlwind in her mind.
Lily, sensing Zinnia’s inner turmoil, hugged her again for comfort.
Zinnia, with her face pressed against Lily’s shoulder, let the comfort of her friend’s presence settle in. She let out a shaky breath, wiping away the remnants of her tears, feeling a sense of quiet relief wash over her. It was so easy to feel like she was falling apart on her own, but with Lily here, it was as though the burden was just a little lighter.
"I don’t know what to do, Lily," Zinnia whispered, her voice trembling. "Everything’s falling apart. I don’t even know what to think anymore."
Lily pulled back slightly, holding her at arm’s length so she could look into her eyes. "You don’t have to have all the answers right now, Zinnia. You just need to breathe. Take it one step at a time. I’m here for you. And I’ll stay by your side, no matter what happens."
Zinnia nodded, the small comfort easing the tightness in her chest. But as she looked at Lily, her friend’s expression shifted, something flickering behind her eyes. Zinnia knew Lily well enough to see that she was holding something back. "What is it, Lily?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Lily hesitated, taking a deep breath before speaking.
It’s better for her to open it up than wait for Zinnia to tell her. "Zinnia, earlier today, I got more information... about James. He really is alive. I just... I just found out." Her voice wavered slightly as she continued. "His memory’s not all there. He only just remembered you."
Zinnia’s heart skipped a beat. "Yeah, I know. Sorry for not telling you about it sooner."
Lily nodded, but her expression was still a mixture of concern and confusion. "Yes, but the thing is—his return... it’s all too sudden. And there’s something more, something that doesn’t add up. I got news about Lucas Realty Group... and Samuel. The company’s in turmoil right now. There’s a lot of pressure, and Samuel’s... he’s somewhere in the middle of it."
Zinnia frowned, not expecting Lily to find out about it so soon. Her brow furrowed as she asked, "What do you think is happening at the company? Why would all of this happen now? What’s James got to do with it?"
Lily hesitated again, a flicker of doubt crossing her features. She wanted to tell Zinnia everything, to make sense of the mess in her own mind, but now was not the right time. "Zinnia doesn’t need to know everything just yet," she thought, taking a breath before continuing.
"I don’t know yet. Everything is still unfolding. But I have a feeling that James’s return is connected to all of this in some way. I’ll find out more, I promise."
Zinnia nodded, though she felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach. "James, Samuel, the company... none of it makes sense. But I have to figure it out," she thought. "I need to make sure Samuel is okay... and I need to figure out where James fits into all of this."
Lily placed a hand on her shoulder, her grip firm and reassuring. "Right now, Zinnia, the most important thing is you. Take care of yourself. And I’ll help you get through this. We’ll get to the bottom of all of it."
Zinnia’s eyes welled up with gratitude, the weight of everything suddenly feeling just a little less unbearable. She needed Lily by her side. There was no one else she could trust with this—no one who could understand the mess she was in.
"Thank you," Zinnia whispered, her voice full of emotion. "I don’t know what I’d do without you."
Lily smiled softly, her eyes reflecting a deep understanding. "You’ll never have to find out, Zinnia. I’m here, always."
---
The next morning, Lily and Zinnia walked toward James’s hospital room. Zinnia’s mind was heavy with thoughts, a tangled mess of emotions about Samuel, James, and everything that had unfolded over the past days. She glanced at Lily, who gave her a reassuring nod as they reached the door.
Taking a deep breath, Zinnia knocked softly. The door opened almost immediately, and to her surprise, it was Timmy standing there, his expression serious but calm.
"Timmy?" Zinnia blurted, taken aback. "Why are you still here? What about Samuel?"
Timmy looked at her steadily, his posture firm but his voice soft. "Sir Samuel told me to stay here to help you."
The words made Zinnia’s heart tighten. "What about him then?" she asked, her voice rising slightly, betraying her frustration. "He needs you most right now!"
Timmy hesitated, his gaze faltering for a moment before he straightened. "I—I’m only following his instructions, Miss Zinnia. He said he’d be more at ease knowing I’m here to assist you. He values you more than anything." His voice was steady, but there was a faint quiver in his tone, as though he felt the weight of the words as deeply as Zinnia did.
Zinnia’s heart skipped a beat, her breath catching at the implication behind Timmy’s words. Samuel’s actions spoke volumes, and yet, she didn’t know how to feel.
A mix of guilt and gratitude coursed through her, making it hard to form a response. Before she could say anything more, a soft noise from inside the room drew their attention.
Turning their heads, they saw James stirring, his movements slow but deliberate as he tried to sit up in bed. Noticing the sudden shift in attention, he smiled, his expression warm and lighthearted despite his weakened state. "Oh, don’t mind me," he said casually, his voice a little raspy. "I just felt thirsty and needed some water."
Zinnia immediately stepped inside, followed closely by Lily, who remained silent, her presence supportive but unobtrusive.
Zinnia’s heart softened as she saw James, his familiar smile tugging at memories she thought she’d buried long ago. She walked closer to him, her voice gentle but tinged with a nervous edge. "James, how are you today?" she asked, trying to lighten the mood.
