Chapter 249: A Web of Secrets

Lily, who had been uncharacteristically silent, cast one last glance toward the direction Zinnia had gone before following the two men. Her steps were deliberate, and there was a certain stiffness in her posture that didn’t go unnoticed.

Back in James’s hospital room, Timmy busied himself with rearranging a stack of papers on a side table, clearly trying to avoid the tension that had followed them in. James leaned back on the bed, his arms crossed over his chest, his gaze fixed on the ceiling as though lost in thought.

Lily, however, remained standing near the door, her arms folded tightly across her chest. Her eyes were sharp, scanning the room before settling on Timmy, who looked up nervously.

"Lily," Timmy started, his voice wavering slightly, "uh... thanks for helping us out earlier. You didn’t have to stay with us, you know."

Lily didn’t respond right away. She took a deep breath, her gaze never leaving Timmy. Finally, she spoke, her voice steady but laced with suspicion. "Tell me, what’s really going on here?"

Timmy froze, his hand still hovering over the papers he’d been fidgeting with. "I—I’m not sure what you mean," he stammered, glancing at James as if silently pleading for backup.

Lily stepped further into the room, her eyes narrowing as she looked between the two of them. "Don’t play dumb with me," she said firmly.

James finally lowered his gaze from the ceiling and met Lily’s eyes. His expression was calm but guarded. "Lily," he began slowly, "I understand your concerns, but this isn’t something we can explain right now."

"That’s not good enough," Lily snapped, her tone sharper than before. She turned her attention back to Timmy, whose nervous energy was practically vibrating through the room. "Timmy, you’re the worst liar I’ve ever met, so don’t even try. Just tell me the truth."

Timmy gulped, his face flushing. "I—uh—well..." He glanced at James again, clearly torn between loyalty and fear of Lily’s unwavering gaze.

James sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Lily, you’re right to ask questions," he admitted, his tone measured. "But this is more complicated than you think. It’s not something we can just blurt out."

Lily’s brow furrowed, frustration etched across her features. "Complicated?" she repeated. "You think Zinnia’s father almost dying isn’t complicated enough? Whatever you two are hiding, it better not make things worse for her. She’s been through enough."

James’s jaw tightened, and for a moment, a flicker of vulnerability crossed his face. "We’re not trying to hurt Zinnia," he said quietly. "In fact, everything we’re doing is to protect her."

"Protect her from what?" Lily pressed, her voice rising slightly. "You’re not making any sense. If you’re trying to help her, then why all the secrecy?"

Timmy, unable to take the pressure any longer, blurted out, "Because it’s not safe, okay? If we tell you everything, it could put you—and Zinnia—in danger!"

The room fell into a stunned silence. Lily stared at Timmy, her expression a mix of disbelief and concern. "Danger?" she repeated, her voice softer now but still insistent. "What kind of danger?"

James stood, his demeanor suddenly more serious. "Lily, you’re a good friend to Zinnia, and I respect that. But the less you know right now, the safer you’ll be. Trust me on this."

Lily’s eyes searched his face, trying to read the sincerity in his words. After a long pause, she exhaled sharply and shook her head. "Fine," she said reluctantly. "But I swear, if I find out you’re lying to me—or to Zinnia—I won’t let it slide."

James nodded, his gaze steady. "Fair enough."

Timmy slumped against the wall, visibly relieved that the interrogation was over, but the tension in the room lingered. Lily, still skeptical, moved toward the door, her hand resting on the handle.

"I’m going to check on Zinnia," she said firmly, her tone leaving no room for argument. "And don’t think this is the end of this conversation."

As the door clicked shut behind her, Timmy let out a long sigh. "That was close," he muttered, sinking into a chair.

James remained standing, his expression pensive. "Too close," he agreed quietly. "We need to be more careful. The last thing we want is to drag anyone else into this mess."

Timmy nodded, though the uneasy look on his face suggested he wasn’t entirely convinced they could keep Lily—and the truth—at bay for much longer.

Later that evening, Lily sat on the edge of her bed, her apartment dimly lit by the soft glow of a small lamp on her bedside table. The clock had ticked past midnight, and exhaustion weighed heavily on her.

She pulled the blanket over her legs and sighed, preparing to finally get some rest after an emotionally draining day. Just as she reached for the lamp to turn it off, her phone buzzed on the nightstand.

Frowning, she picked it up and saw her assistant’s name flashing on the screen. "What could this be about at this hour?" she murmured to herself before answering.

"Hello?" Lily’s voice was soft but tinged with concern.

"Miss Aquila," her assistant said in a rushed tone, barely pausing to breathe, "I think you need to know about something. It’s about Mr. Lucas... the one you were with earlier today."

Lily sat upright, her fatigue vanishing instantly. "What about him?" she demanded, her heart racing.

"I did some digging, like you asked me to earlier, and there’s something odd about him. I couldn’t find much about James Lucas in public records under the name he supposedly used when he went missing and lost his memories—at least, not until recently. It’s as if... it’s as if he didn’t exist before a certain point," the assistant said, her voice trembling slightly.

Lily’s grip on the phone tightened. "What do you mean by that?"

"There are discrepancies," the assistant continued. "Timelines that don’t add up. People who should know him but don’t. It’s like he appeared out of thin air, and the connections he does have seem deliberately planted. Miss Aquila... this isn’t normal."
