Chapter 256: Past and Present

Elena reached out, placing a comforting hand over Zinnia’s. "It’s okay to feel that way. Life isn’t always simple, and love... well, love has a way of surprising us. All I want is for you to live a life without regrets. Follow your heart, and don’t worry about what others might think. I will always support you."

Elena’s mind raced as she spoke. This was her way of letting Zinnia know that, no matter what she decided, she had her full support.

The wedding with Samuel was just a week away, but if Zinnia chose to stop it and be with James instead, Elena would stand by her. Her daughter’s happiness mattered more than societal expectations or fleeting opinions.

Zinnia nodded, her mother’s words offering a small sense of comfort. She leaned back in her chair, her gaze drifting to her father’s still form. "I just want things to get better, Mom. For all of us."

"They will, Zinnia," Elena said firmly. Then, with a teasing glint in her eye, she added, "But I still think it would’ve been fun if you had a twin."

Zinnia couldn’t help but laugh, shaking her head. "You’re impossible."

Elena smiled, her laughter mingling with her daughter’s. "What can I say? A mother can dream."

Zinnia leaned against the armrest of her chair, her mind an uncontrollable whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. Elena’s words, though meant to comfort her, only seemed to stir up the chaos in her heart. The mention of following her heart brought memories flooding back—memories of James.

She closed her eyes, her mother’s soft laughter fading into the background as she was transported to those carefree teenage days. Days when James’s laughter echoed in her ears, when his presence felt like the anchor to her world.

She remembered the way he would wait for her after school, his backpack slung lazily over one shoulder, a crooked smile on his face as if he didn’t have a care in the world. They’d talk for hours about everything and nothing, their bond as effortless as breathing. Those were the days when her heart felt light, unburdened by the complexities of adult life.

But then the memories shifted, turning darker. She remembered the day James went missing—the uncertainty, the sleepless nights spent praying for news, and the hollow ache in her chest that never fully went away.

The pain had shaped her, made her stronger, but it had also left a scar that no time could fully heal. And now, seeing James again had reopened wounds she thought had long since closed.

Her eyes snapped open, and she let out a shaky breath. The weight of the past collided with the reality of the present. "Mom," she murmured, almost to herself, "what am I supposed to do?"

Elena, noticing her daughter’s troubled expression, reached out to gently stroke her arm. "What do you mean, Zinnia?" she asked, her voice soft and encouraging.

Zinnia hesitated, the words catching in her throat. But she couldn’t hold it in any longer. "It’s James," she confessed, her voice trembling. "Seeing him again... it’s stirred up so many feelings. I don’t even know how to describe it. I thought I’d moved on, but... now I’m not so sure."

Elena’s brows furrowed as she listened, giving Zinnia her undivided attention. "It’s only natural, sweetheart," she said gently. "He was a big part of your life. And seeing him again after everything you’ve been through... it’s bound to bring up emotions."

Zinnia nodded, tears pricking at the corners of her eyes. "But, Mom, it’s not just about James. It’s about Samuel too. Our wedding is in a week. I promised him I’d build a life with him. I’ve been trying so hard to be there for him, especially now, with everything happening in his company. He needs me. I can’t just... walk away."

Elena’s expression softened, and she leaned closer. "Zinnia, no one is saying you should walk away. But you also can’t ignore your feelings. This is your life, your happiness. You deserve to be with someone who makes you feel complete—whether that’s Samuel or James."

Zinnia’s voice broke as she replied, "I care about Samuel, Mom. I really do. We’ve been through so much together, and I’ve seen a side of him that no one else gets to see. He’s kind, even if he doesn’t show it easily. And I know he loves me, even if he struggles to say it sometimes."

Elena nodded, her eyes full of understanding. "And what about James?" she asked gently. "What do you feel when you think about him?"

Zinnia hesitated, her fingers nervously twisting the strap of her bag. "I... I don’t know," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "Seeing him again brought back so many memories. I can’t deny that I still care about him. But it’s complicated. I don’t even know if he wants to be with me. And even if he did... would it be fair to Samuel? He’s already been through so much, and this is the time he needs me the most."

Elena sighed, her hand resting over Zinnia’s. "Sweetheart, life is rarely black and white. It’s okay to feel conflicted. But whatever decision you make, it has to come from your heart. Not out of obligation or guilt, but because it’s what you truly want."

Zinnia leaned back, tears slipping down her cheeks. "I’m scared, Mom," she admitted. "What if I make the wrong choice? What if I hurt Samuel? What if I hurt James? I don’t want to ruin everything."

Elena squeezed her hand reassuringly. "You’re stronger than you think, Zinnia. And whatever happens, you’ll find a way to make it right. Just remember—this is your life. You have to live it for yourself, not for anyone else."

Zinnia nodded, her mother’s words offering a sliver of clarity amidst the storm in her mind. But as she sat there, the weight of the week ahead pressed down on her. Her wedding to Samuel was just days away, and yet her heart was caught in a tug-of-war between the past and the present. She could only hope she’d find the strength to make the right choice before it was too late.
