When Love is a Question Mark-Chapter 52: Catching up
Lily leaned back, her expression shifting to one of relief. "I was really glad you were doing okay, Zinnia. I was so worried about you. But seeing you now, it felt like you were finally finding your way."
"Thanks, Lily. I really needed you here," Zinnia said, her voice softening. "Your support meant the world to me."
Lily smiled warmly, but her eyes suddenly turned serious. "I know things are complicated with James’s return. But I want you to remember, no matter what happens, you deserve happiness, Zinnia."
Zinnia nodded, the weight of Lily’s words sinking in. "I know. It’s just hard to reconcile everything right now. But I’m trying."
"Good. That’s all I can ask for," Lily replied, squeezing her hand. "Now, tell me more about this Samuel guy. How does he treat you?"
Zinnia recalled how Samuel had been treating her these past few days. "He’s been incredibly understanding, especially with everything going on," Zinnia said, her heart warming at the thought of him. "He’s patient and kind, and he really cares about me."
Lily smiled knowingly. "Sounds like you’ve got a keeper there. Just make sure you don’t lose him in all this chaos."
"I won’t," Zinnia assured her, determination filling her voice. "I’ll do my best to hold onto what we have."
As the laughter faded and a comfortable silence settled over the room, Zinnia glanced at the clock. It was getting late, and she could feel the weight of everything that had happened pressing down on her. Still, the presence of Lily provided a comfort she hadn’t realized she desperately needed.
"Do you want some tea or coffee? I know it’s been a long day for you," Zinnia asked, standing up and heading toward the kitchen.
Lily stretched her arms over her head and smiled. "Tea sounds perfect. I could use something to unwind."
Zinnia busied herself in the kitchen, filling the kettle with water and setting it on the stove. As she waited for it to boil, her thoughts wandered back to Samuel. He had disappeared into the kitchen to give them space, but she knew he was likely deep in thought about everything, just like she was.
"Hey, Samuel?" Zinnia called out, poking her head around the corner.
Samuel turned from where he was wiping down the counters, his expression calm. "Yeah?"
"You want some tea? Lily and I are having some," she asked, trying to gauge his mood.
He shook his head lightly, a small smile forming on his lips. "No, thanks. You two enjoy your catch-up. I’m almost done here."
Zinnia nodded, though a part of her wished he would join them. She wanted him to feel included, but she also understood his need for space, especially with Lily being there. There was a lot to unpack with everything going on, and it felt like they were all tiptoeing around the larger issue that loomed over them—James’s return.
Back in the living room, Zinnia set down two cups of steaming tea on the coffee table. Lily smiled gratefully, wrapping her hands around the warm cup.
"So," Zinnia began, settling back onto the couch next to her friend. "What’s the real reason for your sudden visit? I know you said you were worried, but something tells me there’s more to it."
Lily took a sip of her tea, her eyes briefly darting to the side before she let out a long sigh. "You always could see right through me, couldn’t you?"
Zinnia raised an eyebrow, waiting for her to continue.
"Okay, yes. I was worried about you, but..." Lily hesitated for a moment, then continued. "I’ve also been feeling pretty lost myself lately. After everything we went through looking for James, it changed me in ways I didn’t expect. I thought once we gave up the search, I’d move on. But I hadn’t."
Zinnia’s expression softened. She had never fully understood the toll that the search had taken on Lily, but hearing it now made sense. "I’m sorry, Lily. I didn’t realize it affected you that much."
Lily shrugged, trying to play it off. "It’s not your fault. You were going through your own stuff, and I was happy to help. But now, seeing the news about James being alive... I guess it just brought up all those old feelings. Like, what was the point of all that searching if he’s back now, and we didn’t even find him?"
Zinnia nodded, her own emotions swirling inside her. "I’ve been asking myself the same thing. It feels like... I don’t even know if it’s really him. How could he be alive and not reach out? It doesn’t make sense."
Lily’s eyes softened with sympathy as she reached out and placed a hand on Zinnia’s. "Whatever happens, just know I’m here for you. You don’t have to go through this alone."
Zinnia smiled, her heart feeling a little lighter with Lily’s words. "Thanks, Lily. I really needed to hear that."
They sat in silence for a moment, the tension easing between them. Then, as if to lighten the mood, Lily grinned. "Now, let’s get back to the important stuff—my epic adventures with men while I was away."
Zinnia burst out laughing, the image of Lily in a romantic café scene playing in her mind. "Oh, right! I was dying to hear more about that!"
Lily leaned forward, her voice dropping conspiratorially. "Okay, so after that disaster with the volleyball guy, I thought my luck had run out. But then I met this French guy. Gorgeous, like straight out of a magazine. And guess what? He could cook! Like actual French cuisine."
Zinnia gasped, her eyes wide. "No way. That’s amazing. How did you meet him?"
"At this little café by the beach," Lily replied, her eyes twinkling with excitement. "I was sitting there, sipping my coffee, when he just came up to me and offered me a croissant. Like, who does that? Anyway, he starts telling me all about how he’s a chef and teaches cooking classes. I swear, Zinnia, it felt like fate."
Zinnia couldn’t stop laughing, the idea of Lily in a romantic café scene making her smile. "So, did you two hit it off?"
Lily shrugged, a playful smile on her lips. "We spent a few days together. He showed me around the city, and I ate more croissants than I care to admit. But... it wasn’t meant to be. I realized I wasn’t looking for anything serious."
Zinnia shook her head, grinning. "You’re unbelievable, Lily."
"I know," Lily said with a wink. "But hey, it was fun while it lasted. And now I’m back here, ready to face the real world."
As they laughed and shared stories, Zinnia felt a deep sense of gratitude for having Lily in her life. Despite the chaos surrounding her, this moment of normalcy was exactly what she needed.
Lily took a long sip of her tea, her gaze softening as she looked at her best friend. "I was really glad I came. You seemed okay, but I could tell this whole thing with James had been weighing on you."
Zinnia sighed, leaning back against the couch. "It had. I was just trying to figure out where I stood in all of this... it was complicated."
Lily nodded in understanding. "You didn’t have to figure it all out right then. You could take your time. Just remember, you had people who cared about you—like me."
Zinnia smiled, her eyes glistening with emotion. "Thank you, Lily. I didn’t know what I would do without you."
"Luckily, you wouldn’t have to find out," Lily teased, giving her a playful nudge.
