When the Side Character Gets a System and Travels through Difference Worlds-Chapter 108: Chi Mo 62
Why would Shen Jinling pay any attention to Cheng Ye? Friends were important, of course, but the person you liked was far more so. He and Chi Mo had never crossed paths before, so wasn’t this the perfect chance for her to get to know him?
’I always thought Jintang was just a kid, but I never expected a kid could be so useful.’ As these thoughts crossed his mind, Shen Jinling quickened his pace.
Chi Mo pulled Gao Jing with one hand and led Shen Jintang with the other as she quietly slipped away from their seats. If they didn’t leave now, they would surely get stuck in the crowd when the event let out. Besides, Chi Mo really couldn’t stand being in the hall a moment longer.
’All I did was one dance,’ she thought. ’Why are people still staring at me?’
Shen Jintang let Chi Mo pull her along. As far as she was concerned, she would go anywhere as long as she could be with Chi Mo.
"Brother? What are you doing here?" Shen Jintang suddenly called out just a few steps after they left the main hall.
Chi Mo and Gao Jing looked over to see a man in his mid-thirties standing before them. He was dressed simply in a white shirt and black trousers, the top two buttons of his shirt undone, giving him a relaxed, casual air.
Chi Mo glanced quickly at his attire before immediately lowering her eyes. She was always a little intimidated by people who exuded such an elite aura. Knowing they were from different worlds, she had no intention of trying to get close to him.
Shen Jinling gave a perfunctory reply, "I just got off work. Since you were nearby, I thought I’d swing by to pick you up. Hello, I’m Jintang’s brother, Shen Jinling."
Staring at the hand offered to her, Chi Mo glanced up at him before extending her own. "Hello, I’m Chi Mo." She then turned to Shen Jintang. "Thank you for taking care of me today, Tangtang. I was going to invite you to dinner, but since your family’s here, maybe we can do it another time..."
But Shen Jintang was a crafty one. One look at her brother’s expression and she understood everything. ’The prize is right in front of him,’ she thought. ’How could I let this opportunity slip away?’
"Momo, you don’t mind if one more person joins us, do you? I so rarely get to see you, and I want to spend more time together..." She hugged Chi Mo’s arm and started to wheedle, clinging to her like a piece of sticky mochi and refusing to let go.
Her head spinning from the girl’s pestering, Chi Mo turned to her friend for help. "Jingjing... what do you think?"
Gao Jing agreed in a heartbeat. "Of course! The more, the merrier. Plus, Xiang Zhe is here, too. It feels like fate that we all get to hang out."
’How could she not see right through Shen Jinling?’ To think of Chi Mo with someone like him... Gao Jing felt a thrill of excitement just imagining it.
The four of them walked out of the venue, where Xiang Zhe was waiting for them at the main entrance. "I saw you leaving on the livestream," he said. "Are you tired?"
Gao Jing accepted the insulated flask he offered. "A little, yeah. I screamed so much from the audience my voice is completely shot."
Xiang Zhe chuckled. "I saw. While Little Chi was dancing up there, you were stomping your feet and screaming. I saw the whole thing on the livestream."
He glanced over at Shen Jinling as he spoke. "Hello, I’m Xiang Zhe, Gao Jing’s husband."
Shen Jinling arched an eyebrow and smiled back. "Hello. I’m Shen Jinling."
"That’s my brother. My *actual* brother," Shen Jintang chimed in, still attached to Chi Mo’s side. "Momo, what do you feel like eating? S City has way too many delicious options..."
As Shen Jintang chattered away, Shen Jinling shot her an approving look from an angle Chi Mo couldn’t see. Shen Jintang secretly gave him a little thumbs-up. Shen Jinling gave a slight nod in return, and Shen Jintang immediately beamed.
’Another successful transaction! Now I can order more pretty little dresses for Chi Mo!’
Watching this exchange, Xiang Zhe suddenly remarked, "Blatantly obvious."
Gao Jing replied, "You noticed it too? His eyes have been glued to Chi Mo this whole time—so intense, yet restrained. In any case, I think he’s far more respectable than Xu Jike."
Xiang Zhe said, "Maybe Lawyer Xu could get to his level after another ten years of maturing. But not everyone is willing to stick around and wait for someone else to grow up. Helping a man mature can come at a steep price."
The couple intentionally lagged a step behind, listening as Shen Jintang expertly drew Chi Mo into conversation. Chi Mo was an open book; she was no match for Shen Jintang. In a daze, she ended up spilling her entire schedule for the next few days.
Gao Jing put a hand to her forehead. "What a wingman... Nope, I’ve got to go defend our girl."
With that, she zipped over to Chi Mo’s side, conveniently squeezing Shen Jinling out of the way. "Momo, have you forgotten? Didn’t you already make plans with Wenwen and Mengmeng? You all promised you’d spend a few days having fun in S City."
Shen Jinling ground his teeth. ’I knew it. Of Chi Mo’s three friends, Gao Jing is the trickiest. She seems bubbly and outgoing, but she’s actually the most cautious. There’s no way she’d just stand by and let me get what I want.’
Gao Jing could feel the waves of resentment rolling off Shen Jinling without even having to look back. As if she cared. Now, she and Shen Jintang flanked Chi Mo on either side, forcing Shen Jinling to lag behind and walk with Xiang Zhe.
Xiang Zhe hid the smile playing on his lips. "Gao Jing and Little Chi haven’t seen each other in a while."
He was indirectly making excuses for Gao Jing. And while he was quite amused by the whole situation, he agreed with his wife. ’Can’t let the guy succeed that easily.’
Shen Jinling glanced at Chi Mo’s retreating figure. "Mm, I know. When did you two get married? I remember from the show that you both had your reservations."
Xiang Zhe wasn’t surprised that Shen Jinling knew this. If he were truly interested in Chi Mo, he would have done his research.
"Just recently. We realized a lot of our reservations were just us overthinking things. Of course, it probably also helped that our child is growing up, and our work and home lives have both been improving."
Shen Jinling said nonchalantly, "Congratulations. I seem to recall that the company you work for is in talks with mine..."
Xiang Zhe’s eyes shot up. Shen Jinling was brazen. "So, rein in your wife. Tell her not to overdo it."
Xiang Zhe laughed, his smile growing wider. "I admit, your offer is tempting. But I won’t be saying a word to Gao Jing. This is about Little Chi. You should overcome these challenges yourself, President Shen."
Shen Jinling finally broke into a smile. "As long as Gao Jing doesn’t deliberately sabotage things, that’s fine."
Xiang Zhe replied, "She won’t. Gao Jing knows her limits."
’Of course, he was on Gao Jing’s side. This President Shen might be mysterious and clearly influential, but Xiang Zhe wasn’t the kind of person to sell out a friend for the sake of his career.’
Ever since Shen Jinling showed up, Chi Mo had felt a strange tension in the air. That tension reached its peak when they got to the parking garage.
Shen Jintang clung to Chi Mo’s right arm. "Get in my brother’s car."
Gao Jing said, "We haven’t seen each other in ages. Shouldn’t we be spending more time together?"
Not to be outdone, Shen Jintang retorted, "But this is the first time I’ve ever met Momo! You’ve all known her for years. You can’t steal her from me now, Jingjing!"
Gao Jing looked at Chi Mo. "Momo, you decide. Whose car are you riding in?"
Chi Mo looked at Shen Jintang, whose face was flushed with exertion, then back at Gao Jing. She couldn’t bring herself to disappoint the younger girl. "I’ll ride with Tangtang," she said softly. "As a thank you for lending me her dance costume today."
