When Will My Childhood Sweetheart Marry Me?-Chapter 194: Lying Without Blinking
After lunch break, Boss Pei still had no intention of assigning her any tasks.
How should she spend the afternoon—continue reading and practicing?
She had been weak-hearted because of the rooftop incident.
But now, every time she saw that guy’s computer screen filled with dense code, her frustration couldn’t help but surge.
She stood for a while, and then the door to the meeting room opened.
When Pei Yan returned, his hair seemed even messier than before.
She moved to the side, "If you’re not busy, I can go out with you to get a haircut."
She felt the question was redundant, even to herself.
Under the light, he looked at her with apparent surprise, then marked something in the requirement document and said calmly, "Let’s go after dinner in the evening."
"I have plans tonight."
Pei Yan asked casually, "What plans?"
The air fell silent.
He suddenly stopped typing, looked up, and frowned at her, "Are you thinking of going to a bar?"
Jiang Shuyao was about to nod.
"No way!"
His voice was fierce and cold as it pierced through the air.
"Chen Jin and the others are going too, not just me," she hurriedly explained.
"Still not allowed."
Pei Yan rubbed his temples, "I could just about agree if Old He were there, but that kid Chen Jin, he’s unreliable."
Yeah, unfortunately, He Qingzhou wouldn’t be there tonight.
Jiang Shuyao whispered softly, "But I’ve already promised Zhong Yuan."
It was agreed beforehand, she couldn’t just bail on him at the last minute; plus, she had never been to a bar and was very curious about it.
She moved closer and tugged at Pei Yan’s sleeve, "It’s not just Chen Jin; Tang Xing and Wen Lin will be there too. A whole bunch of people will be there, it’s not a problem."
Princess was incredibly tender when she spoke like this, her voice soft and sweet even in the air.
Damn it, this was frustrating.
Pei Yan irritatedly ran his fingers through his hair, suggesting with a negotiating tone, "How about this, wait for me till eight o’clock, and we can go together."
The performance started at seven, and even for Zhong Yuan’s sake, at most, the bar would only give the band three slots.
Eight o’clock... That was a bit late.
Pondering this, a senior came over with the requirement document, seemingly with a question.
Jiang Shuyao pursed her lips and consciously moved back to her seat to give space to the senior.
After the senior left, the base again became a serene and busy place.
She didn’t disturb anyone and forced herself to calmly revisit the problems from the morning.
Slowly, it became five o’clock, and most of the tricky issues had been resolved, though some parts went beyond her current understanding and remained unsolved for the time being.
Jiang Shuyao picked up her cup and stood up to get water. The water dispenser was next to where Boss Pei’s old seat was, now occupied by Jiang Xubai.
With Zhang Xinxin not around, God Jiang was working with exceptional focus.
She glanced unintentionally and saw him perfecting a search function, his face serious, which seemed somewhat challenging.
Jiang Shuyao didn’t realize how long she had stood there watching until Jiang Xubai finished the module and turned around to find her standing there.
Uh-oh.
Perhaps her expression was too intense, it unsettled him.
"Is there something wrong with my code?"
Um?
Jiang Shuyao came back to her senses, shook her head, "No, I was just casually looking, just learning."
It’s really too boring, right.
She held the thermos cup, carefully chose her words, and tentatively said, "If you’re too busy, you can give me that preload part, and I’ll package it and send it to you."
Jiang Xubai was about to drink water when he suddenly heard the boss’s wife say this and put the cup down halfway.
He glanced out of the corner of his eye at the boss at the diagonal opposite, cleared his throat, and said, "Why don’t you go online and play some games for a while? There are a lot of games on these computers."
...
Why did she come here to play games online?
Never mind, Jiang Shuyao deflated and listlessly turned back to her seat.
After a while, Tang Xing sent a WeChat message saying he would reach the bar in about ten minutes and asked her what time she would be there.
She subconsciously looked at the messy hair opposite her, the continuous tapping sounds in her ears struck her heart, like an alarm clock.
Her gaze moved across the base, surveying the area thoroughly from left to right.
Everyone was deeply focused.
Jiang Shuyao sat upright, began to tidy up her things methodically—hair tie, tissue, cell phone, ID card, and campus card—and to be safe, she took the charging cable as well.
The pockets on the sides of her down jacket were spacious enough to fit all these items with no problem.
Before leaving, she knocked on Boss Pei’s desk, "I’m making a trip to the library to find some materials."
Her voice lowered, looking into his eyes, keeping her tone even.
Going to the library.
His gaze moved past the girl’s shoulder, nonchalantly looking towards the chair behind her.
The pink backpack was neatly placed on the back of the chair, bulging as before.
He smiled, "Come back early, I’ll go with you to the bar at eight."
"Okay."
Jiang Shuyao returned a sweet smile, casually picked up the web design book beside her, and under someone’s silent gaze, calmly walked out of the base’s main door.
The backpack stayed in its place, the three-leaf clover rhinestone on the buckle reflected in Pei Yan’s dark pupils, as clear and bright as the girl’s eyes.
Princess now could lie without even blinking an eye.
Impressive indeed.
Pei Yan lowered his gaze in thought for a while, then picked up his phone and dialed a string of numbers.
Jiang Shuyao first went to the library to return books, then entered the address of Luye Bar on her phone and took a taxi.
Because she was a year younger than the age listed on her ID card, she couldn’t enter the bar.
She waited outside for a few minutes, and then Chen Jin arrived.
Brother Yan had just called him, instructing him to take good care of Sister Yao, making three strict demands: no drinking, no going to the dance floor, and no being alone for more than two minutes.
He: "..."
Thinking that the boss was too overbearing, having come all the way here, he shouldn’t restrict Sister Yao from having fun, but he dared not utter a word of dissent.
On the phone, he nodded repeatedly, hung up eagerly, and went to find his fairy Wen Lin.
This bar was slightly away from the school, mostly frequented by working adults.
Jiang Shuyao followed Chen Jin inside, the sound waves were deafening, and the DJ was fervent and passionate.
Just as she had imagined, the atmosphere was good, just a bit noisy.
From a distance, she saw Tang Xing sitting on a sofa; tonight, that girl had put on more makeup than usual, with thicker foundation and eyeshadow.
"Yaoyao, come here quickly, we’re just missing you."
She sat down, the air that reached her nose was tinged with a faint smell of alcohol.
"This cocktail is really good, want to try one?" Tang Xing was about to pour her a drink.
Jiang Shuyao had not yet spoken when Chen Jin reflexively looked over, "Don’t get me in trouble, if Brother Yan finds out, he’ll skin me."
Tch, what a coward.
Tang Xing rolled her eyes and still put the bottle down.
Soon it was seven o’clock, Zhong Yuan made his debut as the lead singer of a band for the first time, the owner being an acquaintance came to the stage a few minutes before the start, giving a hearty introduction of the Moon group.
Whistles and cheers rose from below, but after a while, the disco ball gently shifted to a warm, soft light, and a mellow melody began to flow through this enchanting and blurry night.
