When Will My Childhood Sweetheart Marry Me?-Chapter 260: His Taste
The project team had a three-day collective vacation, but Pei Yan still faithfully stuck to his computer, and, moreover, he appeared punctually at the base of the office building where Yunteng was located every single day.
Jiang Shuyao, having nothing else to do, decided to keep this gentleman company and work overtime with him.
Most of the time, she browsed web pages by his side, while Boss Pei fiddled with the pitch-black coding interface which didn’t seem to be code for a medical system, and it was unclear what he was writing.
Jiang Shuyao couldn’t maintain the same level of composure as that certain someone; after waiting for two days and seeing no movement from Xinyuan, she inevitably started to get anxious.
Could she have been wrong? Perhaps the other party had no intention of making a move on this project at all; otherwise, given Xinyuan’s usual modus operandi, it didn’t seem like them to be so patient.
Now the entire development department had gone home for the vacation, and Yunteng’s servers were practically left wide open for anyone to look at.
Such a perfect opportunity for a bait-and-switch—if it were her, she would have been itching to act long ago.
At that thought, Jiang Shuyao suddenly realized a problem.
If this was a trap, they should have completely vacated the fortress; yet here they were, she and Pei Yancheng running to Yunteng so diligently every day, wasn’t that openly preventing others from making a rash move?
As her mind was halfway through that thought, her head was gently tapped by that large hand.
"Let’s go, time to eat."
Pei Yan closed his laptop and pulled her to leave.
"Are we staying here again tonight?" Jiang Shuyao asked.
"It’s possible we will, it’s possible we won’t."
What kind of answer was that?
She pouted, "Don’t try to play riddles with me, you must have a plan."
The elevator doors opened, and Pei Yan embraced her as they entered, raising an eyebrow, "Then Princess, what do you think my plan is?"
Jiang Shuyao huffed twice, "If I knew that, I wouldn’t need to waste the entire afternoon guessing."
After her grumpy retort, Pei Yan couldn’t help but let out a low chuckle.
"Plans can’t keep up with changes; we need to give the opponent complete initiative to truly show our sincerity."
Give whom the initiative, Xinyuan?
"Guarding the servers tightly every day, we still need to let others in, don’t we?" Jiang Shuyao was somewhat skeptical, "I feel if it goes on like this, Xinyuan will definitely seek other means. By then, we’ll be the ones who are passive."
When they exited the office building, they found it was still early. She tilted her head, "Why don’t we go to the Technology Park to eat? I need to pick up some things there."
"Mm, after eating, you’ll go straight back to the apartment," Pei Yan said as he walked to the roadside to hail a cab.
"What about you, are you really coming back to work overtime?" Jiang Shuyao clasped his arm and gave it a gentle shake, "Stop working overtime, let’s give Xinyuan a chance."
Ha.
Pei Yan, amused, pinched her nose, "Spoiled with me out of rare affection, just for something that’s not quite honorable—Princess, what am I to make of you?"
Jiang Shuyao’s simple expression froze.
Was she just acting coy with him?
She always felt like acting coy was a bit of a challenge for her.
But it seemed it was actually pretty easy to do.
She asked curiously, "Do all you men like it when women act coy? If I pampered you with affection every day, could I get away with murder and make any request I want?"
"Acting coy won’t work with me," Pei Yan glanced at her sidelong, "If you want something, bring something substantial, like—"
"Don’t say it; I don’t want to hear," she interrupted him ruthlessly before he could finish.
She could guess what he was about to say with just the tip of her toe.
Love is like a double-edged sword.
Jiang Shuyao sometimes wondered, if this guy was still single at this point, whether someone like Yuan Chong could seal the deal by just sending over a beautiful woman.
It was quite possible.
As she mulled this over, she felt the intense gaze of the person beside her.
Turning her head, she was suddenly met with his dark, deep eyes.
"Princess, what are you thinking about?" Pei Yan asked with a lazy smile.
Jiang Shuyao fell silent for a moment before replying earnestly, "I was thinking about whether Yuan Chong would use a beauty trap."
When they arrived at their destination, the car slowly pulled over and stopped.
After hearing her groggy statement, a faint smile formed at the corners of Pei Yan’s lips.
"Then he’s seriously underestimating my taste."
Jiang Shuyao unbuckled her seatbelt, got out of the car, and asked him, "What’s your taste? Do share."
Pei Yan smiled noncommittally and began to describe leisurely, "The woman I like must first have a pair of lofty eyes and a heart that is both rational and vulnerable. Also, add a little bit of reckless adventurous spirit, and that would be perfect."
"..."
She suspected he was describing the seven dwarfs from a fairy tale.
At this hour, the shopping strip near the Technology Park was bustling, and it being a holiday, the restaurants were almost all full to capacity.
Pei Yan led her into the mall and they took the elevator up to the third floor.
The two of them often came here to eat. The place he was taking her to now was where they had their first meal at the Technology Park back in their sophomore year, along with Jiang Xubai. The meal they shared just after leaving the office building was here.
Nearly three years had passed, yet the scenes of the past seemed so close at hand.
Back then, Jiang Xubai was sitting next to the window, staring blankly into the distance at the rising and falling skyscrapers, his eyes filled with a deep longing and eagerness for the future, a vision that Jiang Shuyao still couldn’t forget.
To be honest, Young Master Pei had poured his heart out back then in an attempt to recruit him: he had appealed to his emotions, explained the reasons, and had even shown one hundred percent sincerity in his efforts.
Unfortunately, fate plays cruel tricks, and just as everything was starting to take shape, so many unexpected problems cropped up.
But sometimes, you really get what you think about.
Midway through the meal, Jiang Shuyao went to the washroom and ran into an unexpected person, Zhang Xinxin.
The other party was also pleasantly surprised when she saw her.
"Yaoyao, is it really you?" Zhang Xinxin was the same enthusiastic person as before, rushing forward and hugging her while hopping in place a few times, "Oh my gosh, we haven’t seen each other in a year, right? I’ve missed you so much."
It had been more than a year, nearly two to be exact.
Zhang Xinxin was a grade above her, and since Jiang Shuyao had left the base, there was even less chance of bumping into each other at school.
Jiang Shuyao stepped back with a laugh, freeing her neck from the other’s grasp, "Are you alone? Where’s Jiang Xu?"
"He’s waiting for me outside. We’ve just finished eating and are planning to shop around and buy some clothes," Zhang Xinxin said jokingly, "How is it between you and Boss Pei? Have you registered your marriage yet?"
"Not yet."
"Me neither," Zhang Xinxin moaned with a deflated air, "We women are just so unlucky!"
She might have deliberately raised her voice for the people outside to hear.
A few pairs of eyes from passersby looked her way, and Jiang Shuyao fought the urge to cover her mouth, "Let nature take its course with these things, try to be open-minded."
"I can’t be open-minded." Zhang Xinxin pouted, "The young talents at my job are lined up all the way to the Pacific Ocean, but my heart is set on a blockhead. And no matter how much my family pressures me, the blockhead just won’t get a clue. What should I do?"
The truth wasn’t that the blockhead wouldn’t get a clue.
Rather, it was exactly because Jiang Xu had his own thoughts that he wasn’t willing to give in just yet.
