Chapter 208: Chapter 208: Connor’s True Colors

The two sat in the backseat, Vera whispered in Elara’s ear, "Be honest, where did you find such an amazing husband? Is he a second-generation rich?"

Elara thought for a moment and whispered back, "Probably not just second-generation, but several generations rich? He’s the family heir, but... we’re about to divorce."

Vera’s pupils shook, "What? What did you say? You’re kicking such a quality man to the curb? Elara, you have no heart!"

"It’s a long story," Elara quickly soothed, "I’ll explain it to you later."

Vera glared at her, gritting her teeth, "You better have a decent reason; otherwise, I can’t help but punch you."

She could understand why Elara would give up someone like Mason; being part of a big family isn’t easy, it’s full of chaotic stuff.

But she couldn’t understand giving up this handsome guy in front of her. So handsome, who cares about any messy affairs? Just have him!

On the way, Vera stole glances at Zion Fitzwilliam’s striking features several times, swooning into a mess, increasingly lamenting how her own husband pales in comparison—such a pity.

They quickly arrived at the hotel, where Vera’s husband, who was already there, was a gentlemanly man, and Vera introduced him to them, "Jason Carter, an engineer at the design institute. He’s not very lively, so please bear with him."

Jason greeted Elara with a smile and shook hands with Zion Fitzwilliam.

Zion Fitzwilliam took the moment to introduce himself, "Zion Fitzwilliam."

Jason, not good with words, was visibly sincere with his smile.

The four walked in and just after they sat down, Jean Dunn called, sounding a bit apologetic, "Vera, Elara, are you all there? I might be a bit late, Connor hasn’t arrived yet."

Vera said, "Okay, no worries, don’t rush. We’ll wait for you."

"Really sorry about this," Jean Dunn apologized, "I’ll push him again."

After hanging up, Vera’s expression was a bit off, secretly sending Elara a WeChat message, "Do you think Connor is with another woman? Jean Dunn is waiting while pregnant, why am I so unhappy?"

Elara replied with a helpless emoji, not knowing what to say.

As the Fitzwilliam Family head, Zion Fitzwilliam was insightful and knowledgeable, and since Jason was Elara’s friend, he treated him as such, deliberately fostering friendship, and they quickly started chatting warmly.

After more than half an hour, Jean Dunn, along with Connor at last arrived, immediately apologizing, "Really sorry, we hit traffic on the way, came late, sorry to keep you waiting."

Connor stood beside her, saying nothing, while Jean Dunn apologized profusely. He looked at the people present, with a hint of disdain in his eyes.

Elara glanced at Vera and slightly nodded; Jean Dunn’s boyfriend was indeed accompanying Rosalind at that time.

Vera’s face changed immediately, deliberately saying to Connor, "So you’re Jean Dunn’s boyfriend, right? To anyone who didn’t know better, she’d seem to be your servant—coming without a word, making her look low. Are you just fine with that?"

Connor glared instantly, unhappy, asked Jean Dunn, "Who’s this? Are your friends like this? I feel they’re unfriendly towards me. Jean, I’m leaving."

Jean Dunn hurriedly held him, explaining, "Connor, don’t misunderstand; Vera didn’t mean it like that. She was just joking, don’t be upset."

She turned to Vera, "Right, Vera?"

Knowing Vera isn’t usually like this, but unknown why she treated Connor this way, everyone attempting to gather was difficult; it’d be ugly to disperse unhappily.

Vera, after all, unwilling to see her struggle, reluctantly nodded.

Jean Dunn managed to convince Connor to sit down.

Connor eyed the hotel surroundings and said, "You picked a bad spot; The Rivage has a western restaurant with impeccable environment and service. I’d say, we’d be better off there."

Vera held back repeatedly and declared, "Why don’t you host, and we’ll dine there?"

Connor’s face froze, his expression turning sickeningly sour, after a while saying, "We’re all settled in, what’s the point of changing places? Next time, maybe."

Jean Dunn pulled Connor’s arm a bit, signaling him to say less; their financial situation was tight, this hotel already quite a stretch, mentioning The Rivage hotel seemed farfetched.

Connor shook her hand off, grumbled, "Why do you keep pulling me?"

He looked at Zion Fitzwilliam and Jason, asking, "What do you two do?"

Jason, being honest, responded to Connor, "I work at a design institute, drawing plans."

Connor smirked disdainfully, "Drawing plans, huh."

Though not too evident, his expression was obviously scornful.

Vera felt her fists clenching once more.

Just like this, Jean Dunn was infatuated. What’s there in him? Even without the cheating issue, Jean Dunn’s losing out big time!

Connor then shifted to Zion Fitzwilliam, rudely questioning, "How about you?"

Zion Fitzwilliam, casually, didn’t answer, instead asked, "What do you do?"

Connor paused, said nothing.

Jean Dunn, grasping the situation, hurriedly explained, "Connor used to work in human resources, company optimization ended up downsizing him; he’s currently job hunting."

Zion Fitzwilliam laughed lightly, "So an unemployed person, by his demeanor, I figured he’d be a major boss."

"Not likely," Jean Dunn replied with a chuckle, "He’s just in a bad mood lately, don’t mind him."

Connor glared at her, "Do you need to misrepresent me?"

Elara felt if things continued, this meal wouldn’t be had.

After all, it’s everyone’s first meeting, and it wouldn’t look good to make a scene in front of Jean Dunn.

So she gently tugged at Zion Fitzwilliam and whispered, "I know you’re not used to this kind of grievance, but could you bear with it?"

Zion Fitzwilliam couldn’t help but smile at her cautious approach and responded with a deliberately calm "Mm."

Jean Dunn awkwardly laughed, "Let’s not talk about this. It’s rare for us all to gather together."

She then gave Connor a look, but Connor turned his head disdainfully, not even sparing her a glance.

Vera Ford restrained her temper and asked, "Jean Dunn, you only took three days off before, and Elara helped you extend it twice. We really can’t extend it any further. How about you go to the company tomorrow and apply for maternity leave?"

Their company’s benefits in this regard are excellent; they won’t mistreat pregnant women.

At this, Jean Dunn instinctively glanced at Connor.

Connor coughed and said, "Jean Dunn is pregnant. I mean she should take a good rest. The work intensity at your company is quite high. Whether she works or not, it’s just that."

Vera looked at Jean Dunn, "Is that what you think too?"

Jean Dunn smiled awkwardly, "Connor is just thinking of my well-being."

Vera took a deep breath and didn’t say any more.

The atmosphere at the dinner was very strange. Jason Carter, noticing the open and covert struggles at the table, focused on eating in silence.

Zion Fitzwilliam was always taking care of Elara Hale, even being careful enough to test the temperature of the water she drank.

Vera gave Jean Dunn a meaningful look and said, "When you get married, you should marry someone like Mr. Fitzwilliam, who won’t let you suffer grievances no matter what. Marriage and having children are big deals for women, and you must be careful."

Jean Dunn thought Vera was talking to her and smiled, "Yeah, all three of us found good husbands, we are so lucky."

Vera’s mouth twitched, unable to say a word.

Connor ate quickly, and without caring if Jean Dunn was done eating, he urged, "Let’s go. I have friends waiting to play games together!"

Jean Dunn blushed at his words and whispered, "My colleagues haven’t finished eating yet!"

Connor frowned impatiently, "But I’m done. Didn’t I mention I have other things to do? Do you really want me to sit and watch them eat? Do they deserve that?"

Jean Dunn was furious but didn’t say anything for the sake of Connor’s reputation.

Vera, however, turned cold, "We don’t have the honor to have Mr. Kane dine with us. Jean Dunn, if you’re done, just leave."

Jean Dunn stood awkwardly, filled with guilt, and said, "Vera, Connor didn’t mean that..."

Before she could finish, Connor interrupted her, "They couldn’t care less about us. Why are you clinging to them? Let’s go!"

And with that, Jean Dunn was pulled away by him.

Vera angrily cursed, "What a jerk!"

Elara sighed, "Don’t be upset."

The situation was worse than they anticipated; Connor not only cheated but also didn’t care how Jean Dunn felt. Clearly, he thought that by getting Jean Dunn pregnant, he could control her.

And Jean Dunn, with no assertiveness, was utterly under Connor’s thumb.

Vera also sighed, looking at Elara Hale, "What do you think?"

Elara hesitated and said, "Rationally, their business is none of ours as outsiders. We might not solve anything and only cause more trouble for ourselves by intervening. But since Jean has been working with us for so long, and she’s not a bad person, I feel uneasy not saying anything."

Vera also found herself in a dilemma.

If they intervened, they might be blamed for meddling by Jean, who seemed lovestruck. If not, Connor would eventually cause her great harm.

Jason Carter advised, "Why not leave it be? It’s better to avoid unnecessary trouble."

Vera sighed deeply.

Zion Fitzwilliam suddenly spoke up, "Didn’t they say her parents have always been against it? Just send the videos and photos to her parents anonymously."

Vera and Elara’s eyes lit up simultaneously.

Vera slapped her thigh, "Elara, your husband is too clever. That’s exactly the way to handle this. None of us stepping in can compare to having Jean Dunn’s parents intervene. Although Jean Dunn is swayed by Connor, her parents, who have cherished her for over two decades, still hold a strong bond with her."

Elara then started flipping through the employee’s family records.

Finally, she found Jean Dunn’s parents’ contact information.

She sent the previously taken photos and videos anonymously to Jean Dunn’s father.

The two of them finally resolved a concern. Regardless of the outcome of the situation, at least they had done their best.

After dinner, Elara Hale and Zion Fitzwilliam said goodbye to Vera Ford and Jason Carter and went their separate ways home.

On the way, Elara asked Zion Fitzwilliam, "Do you think Jean Dunn will come to her senses?"

Zion Fitzwilliam paused for a moment, "Not necessarily."

His phone suddenly rang. It was Felix Ford calling, "Fitzwilliam, are you guys done over there? Chloe says she wants to invite you to karaoke. If you’re done, come over."
