Chapter 404: The People of Wilderness Province Have Remarkably Progressive Ideals

In the span of a single night’s rest, they had encountered two groups of walking corpses. The walking corpses held farming tools—shovels, rakes, and the like—seemingly snatched from villagers’ homes. In their hands, these tools had transformed into dangerous weapons.

“Say what you will, but only in Wilderness Province can you encounter something like this. Quite the eye-opener,” Lu Yang joked with a smirk tugging the corner of his mouth. He drew out his Qingfeng Sword, whose blade gleamed under the candlelight.

Despite the sheer number of armed walking corpses surrounding the ancestral hall, we are almighty Golden Core seniors who can even establish our own minor clans outside and become the founding ancestors of sects. How could we be troubled by mere rural walking corpses?

“No wonder the villagers didn’t let us stay overnight. They were worried about danger. And they even mentioned something about being eaten by corpses—is this what they meant?” Although the villagers’ attitude had been less than welcoming, Meng Jingzhou was one to hold a grudge. Helping the village get rid of the walking corpses wasn’t an issue.

“Look, there are female corpses!” Lu Yang suddenly exclaimed, pointing at a long-haired female zombie.

Meng Jingzhou was bewildered. “Why would a corpse’s gender matter? Isn’t it normal for there to be female corpses?”

“What I mean is—doesn’t your karmic backlash prevent you from meeting women? But you can run into these female corpses, which shows that your karmic backlash is only limited to living people. Corpses and demons don’t count. If we can’t solve your problem in Wilderness Province, you could go stay in the Demon Region until you reach the Divine Transfiguration Stage.”

“Go to hell! I refuse to believe Big Senior Sister won’t return eventually!” Meng Jingzhou snapped. He acted first, launching himself at the walking corpses.

“Crushing Fist!” Meng Jingzhou drove his horn-like knuckles into the walking corpses.

Boom! The walking corpse exploded, and the force sent the encroaching horde flying back, clearing a path.

“Hmm, these corpses are so tough.” Meng Jingzhou was stunned. He had assumed that these were random corpses from the wild, fragile enough to be beaten into pulp with a single Crushing Fist.

“Immortal Fairy, these walking corpses aren’t contagious, right?” Lu Yang had originally intended to stop Meng Jingzhou from acting until they understood the dangers, but it seemed too late for any of that now.

“What do you by ‘contagious?’” The Everlasting Immortal Fairy was confused by Lu Yang’s question.

“You know, if a living person gets bitten, they turn into a walking corpse?” fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

The Everlasting Immortal Fairy looked at Lu Yang as if he was an idiot. “Of course not, or rather, I have never even heard of such a thing. Why would you think that?”

“Just a random thought.”

Assured there was no risk of infection, Lu Yang joined the fray without hesitation. Upon engaging them, he also noticed that these walking corpses were unusually tough, a clear sign of being refined by an expert.

“Did you really think you could eat us? Dream on!” The two burst out laughing as they hurled the walking corpses out of the ancestral hall.

To the walking corpses, it might have seemed like they had surrounded the duo. But from the duo’s perspective, they had the walking corpses cornered.

“None of you shall escape! Today, we brothers will eradicate this menace for the people!”

Just as the two were about to unleash their unique arts and wipe out the walking corpses, they heard an elderly voice nearby.

“Young brothers, please show mercy! They mean no harm!”

It was the same old man who had refused them lodging at the start.

“What I said about them eating people was just a scare tactic! They simply wanted to eat the offerings in the ancestral hall, and you two happened to be there!”

The two froze. Upon closer reflection, it did seem like the walking corpses never had any intentions of attacking them.

They tentatively ceased their assault and observed that the corpses didn’t attack them but instead went around them to enter the ancestral hall.

Only after all the walking corpses had shuffled into the ancestral hall did they approach the old man for an explanation.

The old man sighed. “I’m the village chief of Jianshi Village. You might find the explanation behind this matter of the walking corpses hard to believe, so it’s better that I show you something first.”

They watched the walking corpses swarm into the ancestral hall, crowding around the still-warm mantou. Soon, the mantou turned cold, all traces of warmth gone. Only then did the walking corpses give up.

When they left the ancestral hall, the walking corpses held their shovels, rakes, and plows as they marched in unison out of Jianshi Village.

The trio tailed them all the way, though the walking corpses didn’t go far, stopping at the fields to till the soil with their farming tools. Some even collected water from the river with carrying poles and tirelessly irrigated the fields. Others, lacking tools, squatted to pull weeds or squash pests. With well-defined delegation of roles, the walking corpses looked like diligent old farmers.

After finishing their tasks, the walking corpses grabbed their tools and walked from the fields to the village entrance, then to the cemetery at the outskirts, where they dug holes with their tools in hand and buried themselves.

Lu Yang, “...”

Meng Jingzhou, “...”

The two rubbed their temples, wondering if they were hallucinating.

“Do all of you people in Wilderness Province use walking corpses for farming?” This is far more advanced than anything in other provinces. Even our Dao-Seeking Sect can’t compare. Back in our sect, we only used the Blue-Eyed Water Buffaloes and Third Elder for plowing the land.

The village chief helplessly explained, “It’s not what you think. We’re just ordinary folks. How could we afford to maintain so many walking corpses? The truth is, we also don’t know where they came from.

“One night, we were resting under the tree at the village entrance when we saw them approaching. At first, everyone was terrified and thought those walking corpses were going to attack us. But after coming into contact with them, we discovered that they meant no harm. Perhaps they had exhausted their energy and simply stayed on in our village.

“Although we don’t have Corpse Drivers here, I’d apprenticed under one in my youth. Using whatever fraction of what I’d learned, I tried steaming mantou to feed them.

“This method proved effective. The walking corpses became active again. Then, someone suggested putting them to work in the fields. I thought it was a good idea, so I drove them to plow the land.

“And just like that, we now rest during the day, steam a pot of mantou at dusk, and place them in the ancestral hall. At night, the walking corpses climb out of their graves, absorb the mantou’s yang energy, and till the fields. Since everyone is still afraid of the walking corpses, all the households close their doors and stay indoors after dark.

“After the walking corpses are done farming, they will automatically bury themselves until the next night, and the cycle repeats.

“I'm not sure if I should be saying this, but ever since the walking corpses took over farming, life’s been much easier. We even have free time for other matters.”

“Then why did you refuse us lodging?”

The village chief admitted honestly, “We feared you’d find out about the ownerless walking corpses here and report it to the authorities. If the authorities locate their master, wouldn’t we have to farm by ourselves again?

“We initially wanted to scare you off. Who would have thought that you not only stayed but also decided to sleep in the ancestral hall? Seeing that the truth would be exposed regardless, I figured showing up to explain the matter was better than letting you get beaten by the walking corpses.”
