Chapter 130: Negotiating Happiness

"What about kids?" Alec asked.

"Definitely not twelve."

"What if we started with one? If we don’t break it in a year or two, maybe we try for another one."

"What if I’m a sucky mom?"

"What if I’m a terrific dad?"

"I could do the cooking while you do the nurturing."

"Deal." Alec held out a hand, and I shook it.

I can’t believe I just agreed to have Alec’s baby.

"But no pressure, okay? When it’s time, it will happen or not. No in-vitro. No procreation on a schedule or guilt trips if it doesn’t happen. If we can’t enjoy the process, then it’s not worth it, you know?"

"They did that to you?"

I nodded. "Every month."

"Never with us. We set the rules together, and when the rules don’t work for either of us, we revise them together."

I could do this with Alec. I could start all over, marry a good man, and live a normal life that meets both of our needs.

"One bank account or two?" I asked.

"Hm, how about three? We’ll keep a household account that we both contribute to, and we’ll each have a private account."

"What is the split?"

"Fifty-fifty?"

"All monies over normal expenses out of the joint account require joint agreement to spend."

"Agreed, or we can do what we do at the company."

"What’s that?"

"Any withdrawal over twenty-five grand requires two signatures."

Somehow, I didn’t think money would ever be a problem. One good job would pay all our living expenses for a year. I suspected Alec was just as flush.

"Do you really think it’s necessary?"

"No, but neither did Mom and Dad."

"Good point. As long as I have money for my personal expenses or a way to earn it, I’m good."

"Tee, you’ll always have access to my black card. And unlike my mom, I don’t care if you spend all my money. I can get more. I’d rather you talk to me about why you need so much money first, though. I’ll support your play."

The rain stopped. "We should go back to the cabin if you can walk."

Alec held out a hand. "Help me up."

"Wait. Let me wrap your ankle and put your sock on. It’s muddy out there, but I don’t think you can tolerate the boot, right?"

"Right."

Alec leaned on me during the trip home. We took it slowly, resting often. Even so, by the time we reached the cabin, Alec was having a tough time tolerating any weight on the ankle. I took him directly to the SUV.

"Wait here. I’ll get my keys."

"Tee, I’m fine. I need to elevate the foot for a while. Ice it. The swelling will go down."

"You are going to the hospital."

Only he wasn’t going to the hospital. A mudslide blocked the road.

"Terrific," I said.

"Looks like I win."

I gave him a glare that said more than words.

"Ouch," Alec said. ’You wound me."

"Quiet," I growled. "Or I’ll flick your ankle."

It was a short drive back to the cabin, but not short enough. The rain started up again. It was heavy enough that the windshield wipers struggled to keep up. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

The only thing that would make the drive less pleasant would be if it were also dark outside instead of solid storm cloud coverage at noon.

"Pull over, Teela. Let the storm pass. We are dry and comfortable here. We can wait it out."

Only we weren’t dry. I should have taken Alec into the cabin and changed out of the rain-drenched clothes from our hike before attempting the drive to the hospital.

I pulled over and put the SUV in park, but I left the engine and heater running. I had most of a tank of fuel so that we would be fine for a while. In the meantime, I unbuckled my seatbelt and crawled into the back, looking for whatever might help us with that warm and dry thing.

In the back of the SUV, I kept a plastic container of emergency supplies so we had food and water. I also had a larger first aid kit with more ice packs and a blanket.

"Alec, can you take off your wet clothes? I’ve got a blanket here you can wrap in."

"What about you?"

"My jacket is water repellent. I’ll strip down to my thermal underwear. I’ll be fine."

"Or we could both strip down and share the blanket."

Alec moved his seat back and unbuckled. I assumed to take off his clothes, and he did take off his jacket. Instead of undressing further, he climbed in the back with me. The man had skill. I would have knocked my injury around a dozen times and landed on my head.

"My jacket is also water repellent, hun, but I will never turn down an opportunity to snuggle under a blanket with you."

Alec’s hands roamed to the button and zipper on my jeans.

"What are you doing?"

"Helping you strip down to your underwear."

"What about you?"

"You can strip me down next."

I smiled. "Why do I get the feeling this isn’t going the way I thought it would?"

"Tell me, Teela, have you ever had sex in a car?"

I shook my head. "Just assume if I’ve not done it with you, I haven’t done it."

"Lucky me." Alec yanked me closer and kissed me as if this was the last time we would ever kiss, and he planned to make the most of it.

I’ll be the first to admit Alec is an exceptional kisser. Well, at least according to my limited experience. But when he really put his mind to it, the man made me tingle in parts of my body I didn’t even know existed.

It was way more than soft lips, warm breath, exploring tongues, nipping teeth. It was the chemistry of two people coming together in such perfect harmony that the mere act of touching became an addiction, and I was jonesing for the next kiss the moment our lips parted.

The storm outside disappeared as the storm inside surged forward. I no longer felt the chill in the air or the dampness of my jeans that climbed to my knees. All I knew was Alec. All I wanted to know was Alec.

I was ready for my first release just from rocking against him long before the clothes between us were pushed aside and even longer before Alec cried out his intense ending.

When I finally looked up from admiring the euphoria in Alec’s face, the curtain of rain that had shielded us from the outside world had disappeared, replaced by condensation on the interior of the vehicle’s windows where Alec and I had created our own heat against nature’s damp and chilly assault. Anyone who drove by could see the blurry images, if not the details of our encounter only I didn’t recall ever running into another car on this stretch of road before.

Labored breathing filled the car. I loved watching the pulse in Alec’s neck jump with each second. He swallowed and that was too much temptation not to kiss my way down his neck and over his Adam’s apple. The tip of my tongue teased between kisses. I groaned.

How could I want more already? I was still throbbing from our last round, but that was how it was with Alec. There was no state of being fully sated. There was only short pauses between need, and I had missed out on being with him for such a long time that It would take well into next week to take the edge off of my needing him.

Alec winced and adjusted me on his lap as he angled the injured limb differently.

"I smiled at my lover. "How’s the ankle?"

"What ankle?"

"Uh huh. Let’s go home before you remember."

I eased my way off Alec’s lap, reaching into the emergency supplies for a bottle of water and cleaning wipes. Five minutes later, we were back on the road with me driving and Alec stretched out in the backseat with his foot up. The pallor of Alec’s skin spoke volumes of the pain he was suppressing.

He really needed to go to the hospital.

"Hey, let me see your phone again."

"No."

"Why?"

"You’re driving. And I’m not going to the hospital. At least today. If Its not better tomorrow, I’ll call myself."

"It will make for a long night."

"It’s okay. You’ll keep me company."

"I can do that."

I pulled the SUV as close to the cabin as I could get. Even so, we had to negotiate a set of ten steps from the ground to the porch. By now, Alec couldn’t bear any weight on the injury.

"Stay here. I’ll be right back."

I left Alec leaning against the porch railing while I rushed inside. I returned with the rolling desk chair.

"Sit."

"Tee, I’ve made it this far. I can jump on one foot the rest of the way." Alec protested.

"Don’t be a baby. Sit."
