Wife's Bitter Revenge Against Neglectful CEO Husband-Chapter 160: Tailed to Together Forever
Ben texted me back. I arranged to meet him at Together Forever. I contacted Wyla for a ride. A knot grew in my stomach as I scanned the area and spotted King’s sedan parked just off company property.
I had no doubt he would follow me to the nightclub, so I arranged for Min to meet me at the door with a couple of bouncers.
It was hard to sit in the back of Wyla’s car, biting my tongue when all I wanted to do was blurt out everything I knew, which was precisely what Bea would have done.
"How goes my background check?" Wyla asked. "Should I give my boss two weeks’ notice?"
"We’ve not even discussed salary."
"I trust you to treat me right. I’ve seen the tips you leave me."
"Background check is completed. You can stop worrying about it."
"Did I pass?"
"You passed."
"Good to know."
"Listen, can we talk?"
"I thought we were," Wyla said. "Are you letting me go? Listen, my dad, I know he wasn’t exactly a good guy, but that has nothing to do with me."
"No, that’s not it. I thought we should sit down face-to-face, and I don’t think it’s a good idea to pull over while King is following me."
"Wyle looked in the rearview mirror. "He’s still tailing us. He’s not even trying to hide it."
"So, can you wait until I get him off my back to talk?"
"I can, but it seems to me you need me more now than you would after the heat is off."
"You’re probably right." I sighed. "Okay, wait for me. We’ll talk after I’m done at the club."
"I’d feel better if you would let me go in with you. Clubs are crowded. Anything could happen."
"Yeah, alright."
"I’ll have someone meet us there to watch the car," Wyla said.
Wyla was dressed like a chauffeur and the rich auburn hair was enough to make her stand out in a crowd. Together Forever was an upscale establishment. Chauffeurs didn’t tend to hang out there, especially in uniforms.
"Do you think you can look less like the help before we go in, and maybe stash that exquisite hair in a bun?"
"I’m the queen of quick changes."
At the next traffic light, Wyla did hair magic. In seconds, the long mane was twisted and fastened into place as a bun low on the back of Wyla’s head. At the next light, Wyla removed her jacket, vest, and shirt.
I was surprised to see she wore a red lace bra. She came across as pretty vanilla. Wyla put the vest back on and buttoned it over the bra. The red bra straps were on display in stark contrast to the back vest.
It took one more light to upscale her makeup, and she used her tie to fashion a creative accessory on the left side of her chest. Wyla dug through the glove compartment. If she pulled out diamond earrings, I would personally nominate her as fashionista of the year. What she pulled out was almost as good.
"I know I put it in here," Wyla muttered.
She pulled out a black belt with three chains that would loop down to drape over her right hip. Now I was the one feeling underdressed. It could have been worse. I usually wore jeans and a hoodie. At least today, I had a designer blouse and loafers paired with my jeans. But standing next to Wyla in her on the fly makeover, no one was going to notice me even if I was dressed in my best finery. Wyla was attractive without makeup and dressed in the drab oversized suit I was accustomed to seeing her in. Dressed up, she was a knock out.
I’d fall in love with her if I wasn’t already totally into Alec.
Alec. Geez, I missed him. I missed him so much I was seeing him standing at the curb of Together Forever. He was so put together in a black suit with his hair down. Rings glistened across his knuckles. He looked anxious, as if he expected to be stood up. I wanted to soothe the tension in his forehead.
If only wishful thinking could turn the illusion of Alec into the living breathing person, I’d forget all about this keeping my distance thing I had going regardless of the fact we hadn’t dealt with Alec’s distrust of me and how much it hurt.
A string bean of a man opened Wyla’s door and whistled.
"Damn, woman, you look good enough to eat."
"Shove it, Eli. I’m on the job."
"Oh, sure thing."
Wyla circled the car and opened the door for me. I stepped out and realized the illusion of Alec wasn’t an illusion when he stepped forward with Min at his side.
Alec held out a hand to help me out of the car. The second our hands met I ached for more.
"What are you doing here?" I asked.
"Min called."
I looked to Min for answers. He shrugged. "It is my responsibility to take care of Ben. It is Alec’s responsibility to take care of you."
"If providing security for me was inconvenient, Min, you should have said so. I could have brought my own detail."
"Deal with your business. I’ll take care of King."
"Teela!" King came storming toward me.
I rolled my eyes. I’d talk more to Min later. Right now, I needed to get off the street if for no other reason than to reduce the amount upheaval I caused for Ben with his patrons. If anyone could calm King, it would be Min.
Min darted around me toward King while Alec and Wyla escorted me inside. Once inside, we were joined by a club doorman who led us deeper into the club. I had faith Min would keep King out of the club, but that didn’t mean his men, who were pros at blending into the crowd, weren’t feeding him images of me.
We went straight to Ben’s office.
"King followed you here?" Ben asked.
"He did."
"What is the man thinking? He’s always been so careful about doing anything that would reflect poorly on the family. Granted, there isn’t much family left, but still."
"I think it has something to do with the medication he’s taking."
"What medication? That is what I’m trying to figure out. Min said the therapist sent King home with the meds, but I kind of hacked into his records with the therapist, and Ben, there is nothing there about prescriptions. Nothing."
"Teela, no. You didn’t. If King finds out, this is bad."
"Yeah, I know, but I’m worried about him. He is acting out of character."
"What do you expect me to do about it?"
"Can you talk to him or at least find out what kind of medication he is taking and why?"
"You act like we are close."
"He’s closer to you than anyone, well besides Min."
"Teela, he is a grown man. I don’t know if we have a right to interfere with his life."
"And if he is in trouble, and we didn’t do anything about it?"
"Why do you care, Teela? He’s not your problem anymore." 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
"No. You’ve got that wrong. I may not be married to him, but he is more of a problem now than ever."
Min entered the office without knocking, shoving King in ahead of him. "Now talk. All of you."
He might as well have told a room full of owls to hold a staring contest.
Alec said, "King, why are you here?"
"Because Teela is here. I need to talk to her," King said.
"So talk," Alec said.
"I’d rather speak in private."
"That isn’t an option," I said.
"Please, Teela, if you would just listen, this would all be over soon," King said.
"Are you ready to call off the surveillance team you’ve had shadowing me?"
"Are you ready to come back home?" King asked.
"Sure, I’m ready to go home to Alec, King. Not you."
"He doesn’t deserve you!"
"And you do?"
"I’m the only one who can take care of you."
"King, I’ll consider moving back if you’ll tell me about the medication you’re taking."
"How do you know about that?"
My smile was ice cold. "I know everything about you, King. The minute I found out how horrendously you’d invaded my privacy, you gave me permission to invade yours."
"What you’re doing is illegal, Teela."
I stepped into King’s personal space. "And what are you going to do about it? Have me arrested? I’d be out of your reach if I was in jail."
"I’m King fucking Heavenly, Teela. Don’t push me too far. There isn’t anything I can’t do."
Alec and Wyla moved to intercede. I waved them back.
"You sound more like Lettie every day."
It was as if I slapped him. King took a step back. "I’m nothing like my mother."
"Aren’t you? It’s your way or the highway and then you cut off all access to the highway. It sounds exactly like something Lettie would do."
"Teela, you’re being unreasonable. What can I do to change your mind?"
"You can start by telling me about the pills you pop like they are candy. What are they, and what do they treat?"
