Chapter 89: The Outing of Teela

Our little group of taekwondo newbies grew by leaps and bounds. Drake, Davon, CK, and Sampson joined. We made up two lines now. The beginners were in the front. The super-dupers, who had more skills than the average special forces soldier, made up the second row.

After the warmup, we sat back for another exhibition match. Sampson and Jake paired up, with the winner set to go against Min.

Davon and Drake watched their stepdad slack-jaw as if they’d never seen him show his full abilities before. I envied their wonder and the fact that they got to live and learn from this man for the rest of their lives.

King joined us.

"Is it okay for me to be here?" King asked me.

"Sure. Why not?" I said, but I couldn’t say it while looking him in the eye.

Everyone followed my lead and welcomed King.

Jake won the first match, but Min dominated in the second.

I was awed to be in the presence of such greatness. It felt like a shame that they were performing before such a tiny audience when they could fill a coliseum with fans.

All the while, I felt both guilty and relieved that Alec wasn’t there. He would definitely be included in the second row. I suspected he would appreciate an introduction to Jake and Min. On the other hand, there was King. I wasn’t sure how he would feel about seeing me dating someone else so soon after the divorce was finalized.

Even more disconcerting, I wasn’t sure which would upset me more—if he was upset or if he wasn’t.

Eventually, I’d discover the answer, but not tonight. Tonight, I got to hang with my friends and work up a sweat at my new favorite activity.

And then it was time for the beginners to show what they remembered from our last visit, only my last visit was last night, and I’d shared several sessions with Alec since the group’s first visit to The Red Dragon. I was nervous about showing what I’d learned, but I wasn’t about to play down my ability.

I worked through the form with concentration and tension in my limbs. I hit my marks, made my turns, and judged my progress against my abilities and not what my friends could do. They didn’t have the benefit of a private trainer the way I did.

"Whoa, Night Shadows, you are amazing. Will I be that good next week?" CK asked.

"I’ve been practicing," I admitted.

"So have I, but I’m not that good," Bea said. Her eyes narrowed with suspicion. "You’ve been sneaking off to practice with Alec, haven’t you? You cheated."

"It’s not a competition!"

Stiff said, "Yes, it is. Everything between us is a competition, and I’m not losing because you are dating a freaking ninja."

My gaze slid to King to see if he heard Stiff. If he did, he wasn’t letting on. He continued practicing in front of the mirror as if nothing was going on around him.

"He’s not a ninja, and keep your voice down. I’m not sure what he’s said to Angie."

Angie walked by. "Angie isn’t blind, Teela, and you guys weren’t exactly covert in the parking lot last weekend."

"It’s your fault we were hanging in the parking lot. You booked a birthday party during our practice time."

Angie said, "I’ll stop booking birthday parties when Alec pays fees like everyone else."

"I’ll pay the fees. Send me the bill."

Angie grunted. "Like I’d ever charge my future sister-in-law."

That set off a round of shock and awe that not even King couldn’t ignore.

I hid my face and the smile slapped on it. "Stop it! This is why I don’t tell you guys things. At this rate, you’ll have me barefoot and pregnant before I learn Alec’s last name."

"It’s Crest," Angie offered.

I shook my head, "Well, that makes everything better. Can we get back to the class before I die of embarrassment?"

"You’re dating Alec Crest?" King asked.

Yup, I knew I would regret including King.

"Yes."

"For how long?"

"I should say I’ve gone out on a date with him."

"For how long?"

I sighed. "After our divorce, King. I didn’t do anything wrong."

King appeared to give it some thought before he spoke. "Yeah. Nothing wrong."

He grabbed his bag and walked out.

"Well, that went well," Bea whispered.

"About as well as one could expect, I guess."

King

King threw his bag into the trunk of his car and slammed it shut. Teela was dating. Not only was she dating, she was dating Alec Crest, and she thought the Heavenly family was fucked up. Wait until she met Eugene Crest.

King and Alec attended the same private school. They were always compared to one another. Alec was taller. Alec was a better athlete. Alec was a math genius. King was more popular. He was richer and more generous with his friends. The men were pretty equal in all other academic aspects except for mathematics.

Sure, King had a hotter head, but when the composed Alec did lose his temper, he did more damage, and Eugene Crest rewarded the boy for his vicious behavior. As opposed to King who faced the reflection room for his bad behavior.

Out of all the men on the planet, how did Teela manage to meet this one? It had to be a setup. Alec must have learned that Teela was his wife and targeted her. That had to be what was going on, but how to let Teela know without sounding like a jealous prick?

In essence, nothing that happened to Teela was his business anymore. He should stay out of it.

King watched as a Jeep drove into the parking lot and parked a few spaces down. Alec exited the vehicle and pulled a number of bags out of the back before heading toward The Red Dragon.

"Fuck it," King mumbled to himself before getting out of the car.

It was his business if Teela was being targeted because of her relationship to him. He had the right to confront Alec.

King jogged over to Alec.

Alec said, "Hey, King. Long time, no see."

"It has been."

"What brings you here tonight?"

"I suspect the same thing as you," King said.

Alec held the bags up. "I’m dropping off groceries to my mom."

"Your mom is Mrs. Chen?"

"Yeah."

"I didn’t know."

Alec asked, "What about you?"

"I take a class with your sister. Half-sister?"

"Half-sister. That’s cool."

"Teela is in the class as well."

Alec said, "Yeah? I’ll stop by to see her after I drop these off."

"Why?"

"I suspect you know, or we wouldn’t be talking."

"Teela is a good woman. I don’t want her to get hurt."

Alec said, "I agree. She is a terrific lady. I look forward to getting to know her better."

"Are you seeing her because I was married to her?"

Nothing like getting directly to the point.

"No, King, I’m not. I didn’t know she had anything to do with you until last weekend."

"The name didn’t give it away."

"Unlike you, I don’t analyze everything to death. I didn’t know Teela’s last name. All I knew was she was a beautiful lady who was upset about something, and I wanted to make her smile."

King nodded. "All right. Let’s say I believe you. Now you know. I’d say don’t see her anymore, but I don’t have the right to tell Teela who to see. But what I can do is warn you that I still care about Teela. We’ll go to war if you hurt her."

"That sounds like a threat."

"It is."

"You know my father. My family. A threat to us is the same as a dare. Do you really want to dare me to hurt Teela just for the opportunity to hurt you? I thought we left all of that in school. I’ve stayed out of your way and you out of mine. Do you really want to end our peace over a woman?"

If that woman was Teela, yeah, King was ready to go to war. When he stepped out of his car, he knew that was exactly where this was headed.

"Yeah, Alec, for Teela, I would, so watch your step. Treat her right, and we won’t have a problem, but the second I hear you’ve made her cry as much as one tear, I’ll destroy everything you and your father have built."

Alec took a step into King’s personal space. His eyes glistened with dark mirth. "You can try."

"Yeah, I can try."

It took everything in King to step away and return to his car. He wished he was as confident as he sounded when it came to winning a war against Alec, especially now that the Heavenly family was still reeling from bad publicity, dropped stock values, and skyrocketing legal costs. But even if he had to sacrifice everything to protect Teela, he would. It was the least he could do for her.
