Chapter 95: Saving Bea

"You have to come with me now," Min said.

"I told you to leave me alone!"

Min showing up at the apartment minutes after I left had me ready to blow my top.

Min snapped. "Shut up and listen. Bea and the boys were in an accident. I’m here to drive you to the hospital."

The blood left my head, and I dropped. I would have hit the floor, but Alec caught me. He held me up.

Alec asked, "Are they alright?"

"No," Min said. "We have to go now."

"Let’s go," Alec said.

"You don’t have to go. I’m here to pick up Teela."

"I won’t let her face this trauma without me."

Alec picked me up and cradled me in his arms. I clung to him. My brain temporarily shut down to everything but the fact my precious Bea was injured.

"How badly?" I whispered into one of the flowers on Alec’s neck as he carried me to the elevator.

Alec relayed my question to Min.

"Bad. We have to hurry."

And hurry, we did. Alec kept me safe while Min sped through the city, ignoring traffic lights and forcing vehicle drivers to move out of the way or face destruction. The minute the car stopped at the hospital entrance, one of my men took Min’s place in the driver’s seat and drove the car away as we rushed to the fifth floor.

Stiff and Father DiMarco met us near the nurse’s desk.

"How are they?" I asked.

Father DiMarco said, "The boys are resting in there. He pointed to a nearby room. Jake is with them. Drake has a broken arm. Davon has cracked ribs and a punctured lung. Both have contusions and cuts, but they’ll be fine."

"And Bea?"

"She’s still in surgery."

"Is there anything we can do?"

"Blood donations. She’ll also need a kidney transplant before it is all said and done."

"I’ll go donate. Which way?"

Alec said, "We’ll both go, and I’ll call Angie. She’ll want to help."

"I’m coming too," Min said. He made calls on the way. One to King and another to Ben.

"Are you going to tell me what happened?" I asked Min.

"Car accident. A truck ran a light. Bea’s car flipped. They are lucky to be alive," Min said.

"How is the driver of the other car?"

"Missing."

"Oh, that will never do."

"Agreed, but first, we take care of Bea and the boys."

By the time we finished giving blood and learning about organ donor testing, King arrived.

King said, "What can I do?"

As soon as he learned Bea needed a kidney, he started making calls. So did Alec. Both men had connections that could move Bea up the organ donor lists.

All I could do was keep my act together as I watched the seconds tick by on the clock behind the nurse’s desk.

Stiff brought me coffee. I wasn’t interested, but the heat from the cup felt good—life-affirming, actually.

Alec finished his calls and sat down beside me. "How are you holding up?"

"I should have gone with her. Bea asked me to go with her, but I said no."

Tears dripped down my face. Alec wiped them away before holding me close, my head on his shoulder as he stroked my hair.

"You can’t think like that. There is no way to know anything would be different other than you might have been hurt too."

"I couldn’t hurt more than I do right now."

I held onto Alec for a long time, feeding off his support as I waited for news about my best friend.

I was a quiet kid in school, much-preferring computers to people. I wouldn’t have had any friends if Bea hadn’t latched on to me. I never socialized with anyone my age before her. Bea’s the one who pulled me out of the basement and forced me to attend school ball games and the occasional party. She taught me how to put on makeup and why girls liked boys. I wouldn’t be the person I am today if not for her.

She tried forever to teach me to be true to myself and to own my eccentricities. I was still waiting for that lesson to take.

If Bea managed to pull through this emergency, I’d do anything for that woman. I loved her that much.

Two men in doctor’s coats approached us and pulled Alec away, but I wasn’t left alone. King took over the empty seat.

"We’ll do everything we can, Teela. Bea is important to you, so she’s important to me no matter what the history between Bea and me is."

"Thanks, King. I appreciate it."

Angie showed up with a dozen friends and relatives to donate blood. Mother Chen brought sandwiches and soup.

Ben arrived at a run and flew into Min’s arms.

"When did this happen?" King mumbled.

"Quite a while ago."

"I’m the last to know?"

"Pretty much."

Alec returned with three doctors. The one in scrubs spoke.

"The patient is in recovery. She’ll need a kidney transplant. Mr. Crest and Mr. Heavenly have arranged priority placement on the donor lists in three agencies.

"Can I see her?" I asked.

"The nurse will let you know when you can go in. And I want to thank everyone for the blood donations. You and your friends and family have been more than generous."

When Alec returned to me, King gave him back his seat without a word.

King said, "I’ll leave now that Bea is out of danger. Call me if anything changes."

"I will. Thank you."

Angie peeled off next with a promise to return with dinner later.

I took a few minutes to visit Jake and the boys, who were still sleeping.

Jake said, "I just got them back and almost lost them again."

"I know. I’m sorry. I feel like it was my fault."

"It’s no one’s fault, except maybe the guy who hit them."

"It still feels that way."

"Yeah, it does," Jake agreed.

I stayed with Jake until the nurse came with the news that we could see Bea. Stiff and I went in first. Bea was bandaged across the face. She had a cast on one arm and a leg in a sling.

There were so many tubes, and the medical equipment beeped and blinked, and the whole place smelled like a hospital.

I don’t think I’d ever seen Bea so still and quiet. If I wasn’t scared before, I was now.

"Stiff, I can’t lose her."

"I know."

"She’s the best part of my world. She’s saved me over and over again for most of my life. If they can’t find her a kidney, she can have mine."

"Mine, too. Bea is too good to suffer like this."

We took turns sitting with Bea and the boys. I was coming off my second shift when Cometkazee stormed up to me. "Why am I the last to know my girlfriend is in the hospital? Do I mean that little to you?"

His eyes were red. His nose was runny, and his cheeks were blotchy.

"CK, it’s not like that."

"Then what is it like, huh? I trusted you guys, and you’ve treated me like a junior varsity player even though I’m just as invested as the rest of you.

"And I know Bea’s hurt, and I can’t even do anything to help. She’s the best thing in my life. I can’t lose her."

The boy broke as I wrapped him in my arms. I knew exactly how he felt.

"She’s out of danger now. She’s safe, CK. We’re not going to lose her. Get that thought out of your head."

I held him while he cried it out. I waited until CK calmed to speak.

"Bea needs us to be strong for her. Now, go to the bathroom. Wash your face. Then you can go in and take Stiff’s place by her bed. You can stay as long as you want. You’re fresh. Stiff should be exhausted by now. I know I am."

Tired or not, there was no place I’d rather be than by Bea’s side, but CK was right. He was her boyfriend. He deserved to be there.

CK nodded. "We still need to deal with why no one called me, but later, right?"

I nodded. "My only excuse is I was late to the scene, and I was in shock. I’ve not even called her parents yet. I keep thinking I’ll wait until I’ve got good news for them. And I know Bea wouldn’t want to worry them."

CK said, "Call her parents. They have rights too. You’ll feel worse if something bad happens and you didn’t warn them ahead of time."

I waited until CK was settled at Bea’s side before I found a quiet corner. Alec joined me. He held my hand while I called Bea’s mom. He continued to hold my hand and comfort me as Bea’s mom went off on me for not letting her know earlier, then he took the phone from me and provided Bea’s mom directions to the hospital.

"You’re alright, Teela. You handled that well. She didn’t mean those hateful words. She’s just worried about her daughter. We all are." 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

"I know. Everything will be fine. Just need a minute to block it out."

Alec kissed my forehead. "Take all the time you need. I’m here for you."
