Chapter 59: Cause Of Personality Shift freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

The rest of the day passed uneventfully for James, as after handling all his business, he found himself with nothing else to do.

He was starting to feel restless again and so, he did what he always did in moments like these — he distracted himself.

He spent hours mindlessly scrolling through his phone, jumping from one random article to another, watching videos, reading discussions on financial forums, and occasionally checking the memecoin stats.

After a while, he got tired and switched to gaming. But even as he played, there was an underlying emptiness that lingered.

James found it odd that apart from Leslie, Patty, and Ralph, there was no one else he could talk to. He has no friends.

And that realization was... unsettling.

For some reason, he had never really thought about it before, until today. Maybe it was because he was always busy worrying about his actual life, and had no time to dwell on things like that. But it didn’t mean that he has never asked himself that question.

"Why don’t I have any other friends?" This was a question he always ask himself.

It would be different if James has internet buddies or anyone he talks to, but literally has no one to talk to.

It wasn’t as if James was some kind of social outcast. In fact, back in elementary school, before his parents died, he had friends—quite a few of them.

Leslie’s friend group used to include him and still include him in their circle, and there were also his classmates, some of whom he had been on friendly terms with.

But something changed after his parents died.

James couldn’t help but pause his game, leaning back in his chair as he thought about it. His action attracted the attention of Leslie who was seated on another sofa.

James remembered that the first real shift in his personality happened after his father died.

It was the first time James had ever experienced true loss and he still vividly remembered the day.

He had come back from school, completely unaware that his life was about to change forever. As soon as he stepped into the living room, he saw his mother crying.

James had never seen her like that before. His mom had always been strong, always smiling. Both her and his father were the pillars in his life.

So he had rushed to her side, worried.

"Mom? What’s wrong?" The young him asked.

He remembered how his mother had looked at him with such deep sorrow in her eyes — like something had broken inside her.

And immediately her eyes fell on him, she just... collapsed into more tears.

James stood there, frozen, not understanding what was happening. It wasn’t until she managed to speak between sobs that he finally understood.

"Your father... he’s gone, James."

Gone...

That was the word she used.

And even though she explained what happened, how it happened, and why it happened — young James never fully processed it that day.

But he remembered the feeling. He remembered that cold, sinking emptiness in his chest.

Like something had been ripped out of him and replaced with a void.

"I didn’t cry that day." He muttered to himself in a very low voice, that was almost like a whisper.

James frowned slightly as he realized that. At ten years old, he had lost his father, but he never cried.

Not at the funeral. Not at night when he lay in bed. Not even when people gave him their pity-filled condolences.

Instead, he had just... numbed himself and pushed through.

His mother was still there. And even though it was hard, they slowly started to heal together. And then — life took another cruel turn.

Just two months after his father’s death, his mother was hit by a drunk driver in a hit-and-run accident.

She didn’t even make it to the hospital.

James didn’t remember much of that day. What he did remember was Patty showing up at the hospital and taking him home.

The following weeks were a blur as James would stay in the room Patty gave him, for days, barely eating, barely speaking.

Patty did everything she could to help him. Leslie tried too.

But he had already shut the world out.

Looking back now, he knew that it was their efforts that brought him back.

If Patty hadn’t been there to force him to eat, to check on him every day, to comfort him and done everything she did, even when he pushed her away...

If Leslie hadn’t constantly tried to get him to come outside, to talk to her, to interact again...

He wasn’t sure if he would have ever recovered. And that thought made James smile.

"They did so much for me. More than I can ever repay."

His grip on the controller tightened as he made a silent vow to himself.

"I’ll make sure to keep putting smiles on their faces."

Patty and Leslie deserved it. They deserved everything.

Time flew by and before James knew it, the day had ended.

By the time he checked the time, it was already past midnight.

"Damn. I really spent the whole day doing nothing, huh?"

He shut down his gaming console, stretching his arms and went up to his room.

Tomorrow and the next coming days was going to be a big day and he He needed rest.

He laid down and slowly drifted into sleep.

***

James woke up early the next day, feeling more refreshed than he had in a long time.

As soon as he reached for his phone, a notification popped up.

Ralph: "Got the exact listing time. Early afternoon tomorrow. 1:25 Pm. Everything is set. Also, the influencers have done their job — the token is pumping HARD. Price is about to break $1!"

James sat up immediately, his mind fully alert.

"It’s almost at $1?!"

He quickly opened his laptop and navigated to the DEX Screener to check the memecoin’s performance.

And sure enough, it was just as Ralph said.

Price per token: $0.94

Market Cap: $940 million

Liquidity: $6.55 million

"Good. Everything is going exactly as planned."

James leaned back, his eyes glued to the screen.

In a few hours, the token would officially break $1.

And by tomorrow, after the listing, the real fireworks would begin.

With nothing else left to do until the listing, James decided to keep things simple.

He freshened up, took a quick shower, put on some casual clothes, and went downstairs for breakfast.

Patty and Leslie were already at the dining table.

"Morning," he greeted, taking his seat.

Breakfast was calm and uneventful and after breakfast, James decided to spend the rest of the day gaming.

Tomorrow is D day.
