{Chapter: 229 Blind}

Pepper stood silently, watching William and Jane interact from a short distance. A sense of frustration and bitterness gnawed at her heart. Why was that scumbag being so kind and attentive to Jane? He used to act just like that with her — warm, considerate, dependable — He was just like that to her, and he had no humanity at all.

She kept telling herself over and over again: Whatever that scumbag does now has nothing to do with me. And yet, no matter how many times she repeated that in her mind, the bitterness remained, stuck like a thorn she couldn't remove.

"Jane, you can't do this," Eric shouted, stepping forward anxiously. "It's far too dangerous!"

Jane's eyes flared with stubborn determination. "Those instruments, that data — it's my entire life's work. I poured years into it. I can't just walk away and pretend it doesn't matter. I have to get them back. Can't you understand that?"

Eric hesitated, looking torn. "But..."

Before he could finish, William stepped in smoothly, his voice calm but firm. "Don't worry. I promise I'll make sure she's safe. If anything goes wrong, you can hold me responsible."

Eric looked at William for a long moment, then finally gave a slow nod. "Tom, you sound like a responsible man... I believe in you."

But inside, Eric was still doubtful. Responsible? Where did this kid even come from?

Trying to shift the conversation, Eric changed his tone. "Still, I can't just let her go. It's too dangerous, and I won't let Jane risk her life. Do you understand?"

"Eric?" Jane called out in disbelief, surprised by his firm stance.

"I said no, and that's final. I won't allow it."

William nodded solemnly, then looked at Jane and blinked discreetly, signaling her with a mischievous grin. "Jane, if that's how it is... then let's not go. He's right, it is too dangerous. I won't go either."

Catching on to his hint, Jane quickly played along. "You're right, Eric. It's just not worth it. We'll stay here."

Eric sighed with relief, smiling faintly. "That's the right decision."

---

Twenty minutes later.

"William! Let's go, quick!" Jane said, running up to him with a grin. "I slipped out while Eric was in the bathroom. He didn't even notice."

William smirked. "Nice timing. Alright, let's move."

Then he turned and called, "Pepper, what are you standing around for? Come on!"

Pepper shot him a glare but still walked over reluctantly, her arms folded.

"Is this your car?" Jane asked as she looked at the sleek black vehicle parked nearby.

"Yep," William replied, opening the door. "Hop in."

The car roared to life, gliding onto the road and picking up speed.

But before they could get far, Jane pointed ahead. "William, wait — look! Isn't that Thor? He's still here, he hasn't left!"

William hit the brakes. "Let's invite him."

Jane rolled down her window and leaned out. "Hey, Thor! Need a ride?"

Thor looked up from where he was standing and walked over to the car, his steps heavy but steady. "If you're offering me a ride, I'll gladly accept. Once I reclaim my hammer, Mjölnir, I'll tell you everything you want to know. That, I swear."

Hearing the name "Mjölnir," Pepper's expression changed instantly. Her eyes lit up with curiosity and suspicion. "Wait — that hammer... are you saying it belongs to you?"

"If you're referring to the mighty Mjölnir, then yes. It was forged for me. Only I, and my father Odin, can lift it," Thor said with confidence, his tone noble and proud.

Pepper stared at him, her mind racing. If this guy is telling the truth... and he really can wield that hammer... maybe he's powerful enough to take William down.

"So that means you're... what, some kind of god?" she asked, her voice laced with skepticism but also hope.

"I am Thor," he declared, puffing his chest, "The God of Thunder."

Jane rolled her eyes. "Oh no, not again. Thor, please, the delusions are back. Don't start rambling about gods and hammers again."

Pepper, however, wasn't joking. She turned sharply to William, her tone ice-cold. "William, is any of this true?"

Jane furrowed her brow. "Wait... did you just say William?"

She looked at "Tom" carefully, the gears in her mind turning. "That name sounds... familiar. William... William... where have I heard that before?"

Then her eyes widened. "Isn't that the name of the public enemy of humanity? The one plastered all over the news a while back?"

"He is the public enemy of humanity," Pepper said coolly, arms crossed and eyes narrowed. "William. That's his real name."

Jane looked back and forth between Pepper and William, then burst out laughing. "Hahaha! Are you serious right now? Him? William? That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a while. There's no way! Tom and William are clearly two different people!"

She shook her head, chuckling. "You must be joking. Good one, though."

Pepper didn't laugh.

William just smiled faintly and looked out the window.

William shook his head with a helpless smile. "I'm sorry if I've embarrassed you. Pepper often compares me to William—always claiming I'm a terrible person. Jane, be honest with me. Do you think I'm a bad person?"

Jane responded without hesitation, her voice warm and full of admiration. "Of course not. You're a good person—honest, just, and kind. Actually, I think you're one of the best people I've ever met."

"You're blind," Pepper muttered coldly, crossing her arms and looking away.

Jane's smile faded slightly. Pepper's tone and words irritated her, and she responded calmly but firmly, "I know exactly who Tom is. You're the one who refuses to see the truth."

"You'll regret this," Pepper said in a low voice, her gaze fixed on the dark horizon. "I'm just waiting for that day to come... and trust me, it will."

Jane sighed and shook her head, clearly growing tired of the tension. "Tom, how can you tolerate such an assistant? If I were in your position, I wouldn't hesitate to fire her."

William smiled gently, a faint sigh escaping his lips. "If I let her go, how will she find another job? She might not be able to survive on her own."

"You're too soft-hearted," Jane said, shaking her head. "One day you'll suffer because of it."

"Maybe," William said, his voice calm and composed. "But if someone has to suffer, I'd rather it be me than her. If my kindness helps someone else live a better life, then I think that's a price I can accept."

In that moment, William radiated the image of a perfect gentleman—kind, generous, and selfless. He played the role so flawlessly, one would never guess the truth behind his identity. He silently wondered what kind of expression Jane would have the day she found out who he really was. The thought made him chuckle inwardly, his eyes flashing with a dangerous glint. What would she say... when she realizes that the 'good man' she's defending is actually William—the infamous public enemy of mankind?

He could already imagine her shocked face. That moment is going to be delicious, he thought darkly. Hahaha...

"Everyone hopes to meet someone like you," Jane said with a chuckle. "Someone good-hearted and easy to take advantage of."

"You haven't answered my question yet," Pepper suddenly interrupted. "Is it true what he said earlier? That he's Thor?"

"Human," Thor said, puffing up his chest, "you will know the truth soon enough. Once I reclaim Mjölnir, the hammer of thunder, my power will return—and with it, all your doubts will vanish."

His voice was full of conviction, but also tinged with frustration. He had grown impatient. He needed to get his hammer back and prove his strength—prove that he was still the God of Thunder.

"I believe you," William said, turning toward Thor with an expression that seemed sincere.

Pepper blinked in disbelief. "You... believe him? You're joking. No, you must be lying. You know what I want to do. You're just saying that to give me false hope... so you can crush it later. Isn't that right?"

Jane laughed and gave William a playful nudge. "Tom, don't let Thor's nonsense get into your head. His brain is already fried—you don't want to end up like him!"

"Brother, you are wise to believe me!" Thor said proudly, puffing out his chest once again like a rooster ready for battle.

William chuckled softly. "No, my brain's not broken. But we're almost at the site. Once we get there, the truth will reveal itself. We won't have to argue anymore—reality will speak for itself."

By the time the black car rolled to a stop, the sky had grown dark. The stars shimmered faintly above, and the area ahead was now well-guarded.

Jane lay flat on her stomach with the others, peering through a small telescope. Her brows furrowed. "That's not a meteorite crater at all. If it really was a meteor, it would've been cleared and taken away long ago. But look—there are fences now. They've fortified the site. This is becoming a military zone."

Just as she said, the crater that had appeared during the day was now surrounded by a perimeter fence. Uniformed guards patrolled the area with flashlights and radios. In just under a day, a small base had been constructed on top of the impact site. It was clear now—this wasn't some random event. This was something SHIELD had taken seriously.

"Their resources really are impressive," William muttered, watching the patrols move with practiced efficiency.

"I'm going to retrieve my hammer," Thor announced suddenly and stood up, determination blazing in his eyes. freewёbnoνel.com

Jane gasped and grabbed his sleeve. "Hey! You can't just walk in there. There are too many guards. Are you planning to get yourself shot?"

Thor smirked, eyes glowing with confidence. "Just watch."

Without another word, he slipped away into the darkness, heading directly toward the high-security fence, ready to reclaim what was his.
