World's Last Hope-Chapter 91: Crops and Miracles
"So, as I said, it will be a good idea to try to use your miracle—the one that will speed up the crop’s growth," Grandmaster Gryndor spoke as he glanced at Eric.
It was a new day, and they were still at the table eating their breakfast.
Aria was eating silently as she listened quietly to the conversation the two were having.
"I don’t have a problem with that, but... using miracles takes mental energy, right? Will we be able to hold the sparring afterward?" Eric asked.
Gryndor scoffed at these words. "Listen, in the future, you will get offensive miracles, meaning you will be using them in combat, so you have to get used to resisting the mental fatigue," he explained.
Eric sighed as he glanced at the ceiling. "Okay, sure, lead the way."
After they finished their breakfast, they went out.
Eric was quietly observing the surroundings, he rarely got out in the city, so most things were unfamiliar to him.
Especially the place he was going to right now.
"So, you said that there are different districts?" Eric asked as he shifted his gaze to the old man.
Aria wasn’t with them as she was too busy with her training.
"Yes, the city is large, but it also houses a lot of people, as such there are multiple districts. In that way, it is easier to keep the provision of resources high," Gryndor explained.
"So we are going to the food district now?"
"Yes, more specifically, the place where they grow potatoes. These are one of the best vegetables, as they keep you full most of the time,"
Eric scratched his chin as he got lost in thought. After a few moments, he asked,
"I take it that there are multiple districts, and there are different standards of living?"
It was a natural question after all. No matter what society humans created, there were always the ones at the top, ones in the middle, and ones at the bottom.
The old man’s expression darkened as he spoke, "Yes, there are. And as I am a Grandmaster and you a Master, you can think of it that we have it the best."
Eric scoffed, "That is true if one ignores the constant danger for your life in the death zone."
"That may be true... but you have to understand something, Eric. A lot of people would risk their lives—even die in the process—just for the chance of a more stable future, a future with hope."
"Hope, huh..." Eric muttered under his breath.
It wasn’t an unfamiliar feeling to him. There was a point in his life where he was glad to risk his life for the smallest chance for a better future.
But he didn’t want to sour his mood, so he wasn’t going to think about the past now.
They walked for some time and finally, something caught Eric’s attention.
There was a large field stretching over the horizon, and all kinds of different vegetables were growing there.
"Is this the food district?" Eric asked in awe.
"Yes, it is, and this is just a small part of it," the old man spoke.
Eric looked at him in confusion as Gryndor pointed to an entrance that led underground.
"What is this?" Eric asked.
"We don’t have enough land to grow all the necessary food, as such, we have built numerous farms one over the other,"
Eric was stunned for a moment. ’Wait, how does this even work? How would the crops grow with no sunlight? How many people were tending to these fields?’
He had a lot of questions, but there was no need to know everything at once, so he refrained from asking now.
"Hello, Grandmaster Gryndor, Master Eric, we have been informed of your arrival,"
Hearing a voice behind them, Eric shifted his gaze to it. It fell on a chubby man that had a few golden teeth.
"Yes, we have come to check how good Master Eric’s miracle is at speeding up crop growth," Gryndor spoke.
"I see, then if you could follow me," the chubby man spoke as he turned around and began to walk.
As both Eric and Gryndor followed the chubby man, Eric realized something.
’This might be the first time I’ve seen a fat man in this world...’
On Earth, it was quite common to see them, but here food was much scarcer, so it was no doubt that most people wouldn’t be able to afford enough food to get fat.
Shifting his gaze from the man, Eric observed the surroundings. A few people who were working in the field had stopped and were staring intensely at them.
One thing that stood out was that all of them were skinny.
’Their boss is fat while his workers are skinny? I thought in this world humanity had united against the corruption, and such things didn’t happen, but again, I was mistaken. It seems that such things are destined to happen no matter which world we go to.’
Eric shifted his gaze to Gryndor. When their eyes met, it was like the old man told him he understood how he felt, but now there wasn’t much they could do about it.
"We are here," the chubby man said as he stopped and pointed to the field in front of them.
"We are experiencing a shortage of potatoes, as such it would be of tremendous help if you could make them grow faster," the man addressed Eric as he spoke.
"Here goes nothing, I guess," Eric muttered as he took a step forward and placed his hand on one of the crops that had taken root.
His eyes shined as he used his ’The Nature is Mother to All’ miracle and made the crop quickly grow faster.
In a few seconds, the crop had grown, and there were already a few potatoes ready to be harvested. It seemed that his miracle was really effective.
Eric placed a hand on his head as he felt pain for a short while, but it eventually passed.
Feeling a hand on his shoulder, he looked back only to see the old man looking at him with a smile.
"Good, now considering that we have to train you to take the exhaustion better..." the man pointed forwards.
"Speed up the growth of a thousand more crops."
Eric gulped audibly, it seemed that it was going to be a long day.
