World's Last Hope-Chapter 95: Mass Awakening
Kyle walked behind Grandmaster Gryndor, feeling his heart beat fast, almost like it was going to explode.
’I just came to say to my boss that I quit now that I have awakened. I definitely didn’t expect to encounter a Grandmaster close to the mines! Not only that, but he is even leading me somewhere! Have I hit the jackpot?’
"How do you feel?" Kyle was startled for a moment as he heard the Grandmaster’s voice.
"I a-am fine, sir!" Kyle stuttered from nervousness.
The old man scoffed. "Don’t worry, you don’t have to worry about anything," he explained.
"If it is okay to ask, where are we going, and what am I supposed to do?" Kyle asked.
Gryndor glanced at the man before speaking. "That depends solely on you. You have awakened. If you wish, you can continue to live the life you are currently living, as just by being awakened, you will be stronger, so your job should be significantly easier."
He paused for dramatic effect. "Or you can join the fight against the Corruption. You and your family’s living conditions would drastically improve, but you have to keep in mind the high death rate."
"I want to fight the Corruption!" Kyle responded without any hesitation.
Gryndor raised an eyebrow. "Do you have a family?"
"Yes, I do."
"Have you talked with them about this?"
"Yes, I have."
"So, what did they say?" 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎
Kyle grimaced before answering. "They... they wanted me to keep it a secret, fearing that I might die if I go outside the city."
"And... you plan to go against their wishes? You plan to risk your life?"
Kyle glanced at the sky before answering, "Yes, I want to say that I want it, because this way I will be able to provide better for my family, but that is a lie."
He took a deep breath. "I just want to achieve something in my life. I don’t want to waste it doing nothing but slaving away in a job with no hope for a better future."
The old man didn’t laugh at Kyle’s resolve. "So, are you ready to die for that hope if the time comes?"
Kyle shifted his gaze to the Grandmaster’s. "Yes, yes, I am ready."
After going to the teleporting circle, they went to the center of the city.
Kyle had never been here before, so he couldn’t help but admire the sights around him.
This place, being the central hub and all, was times nicer than the place he lived at.
The air was light and pleasant on the lungs, his eyes didn’t hurt from trying to see past the polluted air in the atmosphere, the sky was clearer and nicer to look at.
Despite being in the same city, Kyle felt like he had entered a new world.
"This is amazing," he gasped as he took in the sights all around him.
"You still haven’t seen anything, kid," Grandmaster Gryndor spoke as he pointed with his finger forward.
Kyle followed where the old man’s finger was pointing, and his eyes widened as his mouth opened in awe.
"This is the castle?"
He had only heard rumors, but this was the first time he had seen it. Up until now, he wasn’t awakened, so if he wanted to use the teleporting circle to go to the center of the city, he had to pay with money he didn’t have. And even if he had the money, he didn’t have the free time due to his job.
"Are we... perhaps going there?" he asked, unable to contain his excitement.
"Yes, this is where all the awakened would be gathered."
Kyle raised an eyebrow. "All?"
The old man scoffed. "What did you think, you are the only one? The gods don’t choose a single individual when they give out their blessings. If one has awakened, then more have as well."
"Then... how many are we talking about? Hundreds? Thousands?"
Gryndor scratched his chin. "It depends on a lot of factors, but it can range from a few dozen to a few thousands," he explained.
Kyle could feel his heart beat even faster. He was getting excited.
For the first time in his 20 years of life, he had felt excited.
It didn’t take them long to approach the castle. Kyle’s eyes widened as he saw the amount of people that had gathered around the entrance.
There must have been a thousand at least!
The Grandmaster patted Kyle on the shoulder.
"This is as far as we go. Now go into the line and await your turn."
After he finished speaking, Gryndor quickly went past the large crowd and entered the castle.
He was searching for the Saint and for the other Grandmasters that no doubt had already entered.
His quiet steps made faint echoes that spread around the empty hallways of the castle. Most of the personnel were already outside, busy trying to organize the thousands of people that had suddenly awakened.
Just from thinking about all the things that had to be done, the old man put a hand on his head. Now they had to discuss the logistics, where they were going to place the awakened after training them, and how they were going to train them.
It was also important not to forget, as there were now awakened individuals who would leave their jobs—who was going to take their jobs?
Having more potential soldiers was nice, but if the city collapsed from the lack of resources, it was all going to be pointless in the end.
"This is going to be one long talk..." Gryndor sighed.
For a moment, he wondered if he should have called Eric and Aria over but decided against the idea. They were probably training, so it wasn’t a good idea to disturb them, or maybe they had used the opportunity to take a break together.
"Wait... maybe leaving them alone wasn’t the best idea?" he muttered but quickly disregarded the thought as he opened the doors.
Entering, he saw the Saint sitting from across the doors and most of the Grandmasters that had already gathered.
The meeting was about to begin.
