Chapter 136: As Steady as Old Wang

Mount Sanqing, the source of the Xin River, was only two to three hundred miles away from the Longhu Mountains. Its name meant "Three Pure Ones," which came from the three strange peaks that resembled the Three Pure Ones seated atop the mountain.

Because of the close distance, the Daoist heritage of Mount Sanqing had always been closely linked with the Celestial Master Sect of the Longhu Mountains.

As Wang Sheng and the others approached Mount Sanqing, their SUV turned away from a patch of dense trees that had been blocking the view, and they caught sight of several sharp peaks rising steeply in the distance. In the eyes of a sword cultivator, they looked more like three swords pointing toward the heavens.

"Is the venue set on the mountaintop?" Wang Sheng casually asked.

"Unfortunately, it wasn't possible," Bulldozer said in a low tone. "The mountain is too steep, making it too difficult to build on the summit. The venue is set in front of a Daoist temple halfway up the mountain. Preparations started half a month ago, and it is almost fully set up by now."

In the front passenger seat, Mou Yue was sleeping soundly under Bulldozer's jacket. Meanwhile, Mu Wanxuan was sitting cross-legged in meditation beside Wang Sheng, her slender legs naturally folded with a certain graceful beauty.

They drove to the foot of the mountain and followed a narrow path through the dense forest. Eventually, they reached a busy construction site.

The Immortal Dao Conference was tentatively scheduled to be held every three or five years, each time at a different location. Naturally, they could not invest too heavily in each venue, inevitably making the setup a bit simple.

The area had originally been a gentle slope. Without drastically altering the landscape, the Special Investigation Unit had made some partial modifications. After all, most Daoist masters did not care much for minor details.

They brought in soil, packed it firmly, and shaped it into two rows of triangular mounds. Afterward, they secured iron frames on top of the mounds, creating bleachers that could seat several thousand people.

The side backed against the mountain was made slightly more refined, but to Wang Sheng, it still felt like a hastily erected stage outside a shopping mall.

A massive backdrop had already been set up, with the nine bold characters "Grand Tournament of the Immortal Dao" and "Prosperity in Unity" written on it.

In front of the backdrop were two rows of round chairs, welded directly onto the iron frames below to enhance stability and prevent the chairs from being stolen. The most expensive part of the entire venue was the four giant display screens in the center and the matching sound system. However, since they could be reused, they did not seem too extravagant.

Not far behind the venue was a Daoist temple, around which many temporary tents had been set up.

Bulldozer sighed. "To get it to this point in just half a month is already quite impressive."

Wang Sheng smiled and nodded. He stepped into the lush green main venue, imagining the place packed with cultivators. The flowers and applause had nothing to do with him, though, who was just a staff member.

Mu Wanxuan was very supportive, softly expressing her admiration as she wandered around. Wherever she went, people greeted her respectfully and addressed her as "Daoist Master Bu Yu."

With his sword, Wang Sheng strolled around the venue like a supervisor inspecting the site. Soon, he caught the attention of some of the Special Investigation Unit's newer members, who did not know him well. He was not active in the mundane world, and it seemed that the mundane world had not spread any legends about him either.

—A suspicious Daoist is entering the venue. Stay alert. He's currently in sector D3.

—Target located. He could be a corrupt cultivator who snuck in. Be careful.

—Notify the warfare units immediately.

Mou Yue's furious voice then came through the radio.

—Notify your head, you idiots! Did you even bother memorizing the information we gave you? That's Daoist Master Wang Fei Yu, junior brother of the Quiet Fairy, second disciple of Daoist Master Bu Yan, and the Investigation Unit's first consultant!"

All the rookies immediately backed off in embarrassment. Soon, people around Wang Sheng cast curious glances at him.

Even though the Special Investigation Unit was usually very busy, there were still a few rumors about Wang Sheng circulating. After all, when gossip involved the Quiet Fairy, it was impossible not to mention the young Daoist in a robe performing a sword dance—the one featured on her phone's background.

At just over twenty years old, he had apprenticed under a Golden Core Realm master; slain the Wood Yin God, one of the Five Gods Cult's five great leaders; and helped suppress the corrupt cultivators' uprising at the Yellow Sea, where he, the Quiet Fairy, and Fei Lianzi had joined forces to fend off hundreds of corrupt cultivators' frenzied assaults.

After sitting for a while in the stands to get a feel for things, Wang Sheng stood up, still not quite satisfied. Taking advantage of the fact that the Special Investigation Unit had not yet assigned him tasks, he called his senior sister over to explore Mount Sanqing.

The mountain was rich in waterfalls and springs, full of clear streams and brooks. Not far from the venue, they found a small, pristine pool.

Mu Wanxuan, who was in a particularly good mood, excitedly pulled Wang Sheng into the pool to soak their feet. Her delicate little feet swayed gently in the water.

The spring trickled gently, creating a pleasant harmony with the surroundings. Sitting quietly in the empty mountains, Wang Sheng's Dao Heart grew light and clear. He gradually closed his eyes and let go of the many stray thoughts in his mind. As he began meditating, he clasped his hands together and gathered his primal qi.

Seeing this, Mu Wanxuan secretly snapped a few photos and sent them to their master. She wanted to show that her junior brother was cultivating diligently so their master would not lock him up in seclusion again.

While meditating with closed eyes, he asked, "Senior Sister, have you been fighting corrupt cultivators often these past two years?"

Mu Wanxuan softly nodded and then sighed. She liked traveling and enjoying the sights of the mortal world, but she did not particularly enjoy fighting. Sometimes, though, it could not be avoided.

Wang Sheng was about to say something personal to his senior sister when they heard footsteps from behind. His spiritual consciousness picked up three people approaching. Two were at the late-stage Spirit Convergence Realm, and one was at the early-stage Seed Formation Realm. They all seemed to be young cultivators.

Were cultivators already arriving for the conference? That did not seem right. The invitations had not even been sent out yet.

Suddenly, someone called, "Daoist Master Bu Yu? Is that you? What a coincidence running into you here!"

Wang Sheng turned his head curiously and saw three young cultivators, two men and one woman.

The one walking in front, who had just now called out to his senior sister, had sword-like eyebrows, starry eyes, and a graceful demeanor. He could be considered a handsome man.

The two following behind were clearly a couple. They were holding hands, their fingers interlocked. Their auras were closely aligned, suggesting that they were fellow disciples who had also become lovers.

A coincidence? It probably wasn't that simple.

Wang Sheng's spiritual consciousness captured a fluctuation of primal qi hidden in the sleeve of the man at the front. The wave of qi was directed precisely at his senior sister.

A suitor of Senior Sister? Pfft. A cultivator at the early stage of the Seed Formation Realm dares to court her, who's already at the Illusory Core realm?

Wang Sheng smirked slightly, but he soon thought that it wasn't really that surprising. His senior sister had spent the past two years working in the Special Investigation Unit, constantly traveling around. It would be more surprising if no one got attracted to her.

Nevertheless, he showed not the slightest hint of panic.

The man hurried forward and cupped his hands respectfully to Mu Wanxuan, his face filled with joy that couldn't be concealed. He didn't even spare Wang Sheng a glance.

Mu Wanxuan nodded politely. She then continued swinging her bare feet while scrolling through her phone, as if no one was standing next to her.

Wang Sheng immediately understood his senior sister's attitude. He cleared his throat to draw the man's attention. "Ahem! Greetings, Daoist Master. My senior sister is not good with words. Allow me to answer on her behalf."

The man frowned slightly at Wang Sheng, his gaze showing a hint of hostility. It made him seem lacking in composure. Nevertheless, he soon forced a smile, cupped his hands back at Wang Sheng, and chuckled. "I did not notice you earlier, Daoist Master. May I ask how I should address you?"

Wang Sheng replied, "You should introduce yourself first before asking others."

"I am Li Lezhang, a practicing Daoist from Mount Hua. My Daoist name is Qing Wen. May I know how I should address you?"

Wang Sheng casually wiped his feet clean and stood up, answering offhandedly, "Wang Sheng. Daoist name Fei Yu. A pleasure." frёewebnoѵēl.com

At the side, the young Kun Daoist gasped lightly. "You're the second disciple of Daoist Master Bu Yan? The young sword cultivator who killed the Wood Yin God of the Five Gods Cult?"

"I was just lucky," Wang Sheng answered modestly as he cupped his hands. Having already put on his cloth shoes, he smiled warmly at the Daoist couple. "May I ask how I should address the two of you?"

The pair immediately let go of each other's hands and hastily cupped their hands in return, introducing themselves as cultivators from Mount Sanqing.

Along the way, they also tactfully explained that Li Qing Wen was merely accompanying several Daoist masters from Mount Hua on a visit to Mount Sanqing. They had only been ordered to show him around and had no particularly close relationship with him.

After hearing Wang Sheng's self-introduction, Li Qing Wen started observing Wang Sheng cautiously. A moment later, as if he had seen through something, he revealed a slightly confident smile.

"I have long admired you, Daoist Master Fei Yu. Meeting you today is truly an extraordinary encounter. I have heard that your mastery of the Dao of the Sword is beyond worldly standards. I have also had the fortune of receiving guidance in the Dao of the Sword from a few martial uncles in Mount Hua. How about we take this opportunity to spar and exchange insights?"

Extraordinary? He almost sounded like he was about to say "nothing special," did he not?

"No need." Wang Sheng shook his head, speaking casually as if mentioning a trivial matter. "You are not my match."

His words were so direct that everyone present was stunned. Mu Wanxuan's shoulders trembled from holding back laughter.

Li Qingwen frowned as he looked at Wang Sheng, clearly displeased.

Wang Sheng cupped his hands at the three again. "My senior sister prefers tranquility. We will find another place to linger. If you could tell us which direction you are heading, we will avoid you."

Without even bothering to look at the expression of the Mount Hua disciple, he said, "Let's go, Senior Sister."

"Mm!" Mu Wanxuan responded obediently. Her skirt fluttered as she floated into the air. Holding her sneakers in one hand, she followed beside Wang Sheng barefoot toward the west side of the pool.

"Daoist Master Bu Yu!" Li Qing Wen called out with a frown, but he received no response.

The Kun Daoist from Mount Sanqing could not help but comment, "Daoist Brother Li, can you still not tell? Their intentions are already quite clear..."

The male cultivator beside her tugged on his Daoist partner's sleeve. The Kun Daoist pursed her lips but did not say more.

Deep in the woods, after confirming that no one was following them, Wang Sheng smirked. "Senior Sister, among your suitors, is anyone at the Illusory Core Realm? I talked big just now. If I get beaten up later, it won't be good."

Mu Wanxuan, who had been holding back for a while, burst into uncontrollable laughter and even doubled over. Wang Sheng was still puzzled when Mu Wanxuan leaped over, still holding her shoes, and wrapped her arms around Wang Sheng's neck and shook him wildly, almost sending him flying with a casual Tai Chi push.
