Chapter 382: Chapter 382: Building 1, Three Identities_1

Everyone entered the closest building, Building One.

They hadn’t separated yet, primarily because the first floor of Building One housed the outpatient hall, pharmacy, and other facilities. Even if they wanted to split up, it would take time, as everyone was currently exploring the same floor.

"It wasn’t this rundown before; the Game System must have aged it," Wang Linchi remarked.

Hand of God asked in surprise, "You participated in a Conquest Battle before?"

"Yes, I even handed over a medical record, which is how I got out of that Conquest Battle. I didn’t expect to be dragged back into this," Wang Linchi replied, sighing as he spoke.

None of the others present had participated before. Previously, Hand of God and Green Plum Brews Wine had served as leaders of a Player organization in a large-scale dungeon, combating the Erroneous Sin. The other Players had worked solo, accepting tasks from the Game System to contend with the Erroneous Sin within those large-scale dungeons. These were the elite, like the Imperial Guard protecting the palace, and thus hadn’t been deployed for such tasks.

The reason was simple: these Players had been carefully nurtured by the Game System. If anything happened to them, it would be a great loss. The loss of ordinary Players was inconsequential, but losing a single high-level Player was a serious setback, as cultivating a replacement was no easy feat.

Furthermore, in the Hospital Conquest Battle, the main force had never been Players but the Game System itself, so a few less Players didn’t make much difference.

"Then you should have some intel about this Building One," Green Plum Brews Wine asked.

"Nothing. I only took a glance at it from afar. I went to Building Thirteen back then. Also, stop standing around. They’re watching us," Wang Linchi said, reminding everyone.

The Players glanced at the group of medical staff and patients observing them, not particularly concerned. They knew they were untouchable as long as they didn’t violate the killing rule. As for being watched, let them watch. This kind of intimidation was a low-level tactic. Unless one was hopelessly timid, most Players had actually grown accustomed to such gazes.

Some Players even glared back.

"Alright, let’s focus on what needs to be done. Everyone, acquire your identities as quickly as possible," Hand of God said. He had done his homework before arriving and knew that most Players could only go to Building Thirteen during the Hospital Conquest Battle.

This instance would undoubtedly be lengthy, and more Players were expected to arrive in subsequent waves. In a prolonged instance like this, the best strategy was to obtain an identity within the system.

There were three identities available in the hospital: doctor, Nurse, and patient. None of these roles were particularly appealing, but they could help them further in causing these Erroneous Sin to ’crash.’

Everyone quickly dispersed.

Those who wanted the patient identity went to register. Those wanting the Nurse identity went to apply. As for becoming a doctor, that was more difficult as it required professional knowledge, so the majority of Players had already ruled it out.

"What identity should we choose?" Wang Linchi asked quietly.

"Let’s be Nurses," Green Plum Brews Wine replied in a low voice. "You have a certain degree of freedom as a Nurse in the hospital. Although you have to care for those patients, it’s much better than being a patient."

Apart from Wang Linchi and the ten other Players, everyone else here was an Erroneous Sin.

Being a patient would be even worse. Not only would they not know to which ward they’d be moved, but they’d also be attended to by doctors and Nurses, which would greatly restrict their freedom. However, their safety would be relatively guaranteed as long as they didn’t violate any rules of the hospital. Within the established rules, they could even have the medical staff protect them.

"I think being a doctor is better. It would be easier for us to find the hospital director that way," Wang Linchi suggested.

Hand of God gave him a strange look. "We don’t know anything; we wouldn’t even pass an interview."

"I know things; I can handle this," Wang Linchi said confidently. Despite having no practical experience, he had committed everything to memory.

Green Plum Brews Wine asked, his voice laced with doubt, "Are you sure you can pull this off?" His suspicion flared. He suspected Wang Linchi was trying to set them up for a fall. Otherwise, why would he make such an outrageous suggestion?

"Absolutely. I’ll lead the way. No wonder they brought me here; they’re planning to have me cheat for you guys," Wang Linchi said, preparing to apply for a doctor’s position.

Green Plum Brews Wine exchanged a look with Hand of God. As partners who had cooperated for so long, they had this much tacit understanding. Neither of them intervened, choosing instead to follow Wang Linchi. They were curious to see if he possessed genuine skills or if this was a ploy to lead them into a trap. If the former were true, the likelihood of Wang Linchi being an impostor would decrease significantly.

After catching up with Wang Linchi, Green Plum Brews Wine whispered, "Actually, I believe there are two other potential identities, though acquiring them might prove exceedingly difficult."

Wang Linchi asked, somewhat curious, "What identities?"

"Leadership, and positions in administration or logistics. If we could acquire administrative or logistics roles, we might have a chance to be promoted to leadership later..." Green Plum Brews Wine explained. Truthfully, he wasn’t very satisfied with the doctor identity either; it offered too little operational freedom.

"Dream on," Wang Linchi scoffed. "Do you really think you can get into something like that with your current status?" Unless one had connections, aspiring to a leadership position here meant dedicating twenty or thirty years of slogging away, and even then, you’d need to constantly grease palms along the way. Only then might it be possible. Otherwise, even if you managed to get a position, it would only be as a temporary worker—doing the hardest work, earning the least money, and taking the most blame. Not only would your achievements go unrecognized, but you also might not even secure a permanent position. It’s hard enough for ordinary people to climb the ladder like that, let alone Players attempting it within the Erroneous Sin’s established order.

"Linyuan Fish is right," Hand of God chimed in, also disagreeing with Green Plum Brews Wine’s plan. "We can’t go down that road; we simply don’t have the capability." The potential for independent action was indeed high, but when weighed against the cost and success rate, if Wang Linchi could genuinely secure a doctor’s identity, the strategic advantage wouldn’t be significantly different.

Green Plum Brews Wine, though somewhat reluctant, nodded. "I was too rash." Upon reflection, he realized how naïve his thinking had been. Climbing from being a nameless nobody to a leadership position was never that easy. Even if one was adept at scheming and currying favor, such a rapid ascent was impossible.

The three of them quickly arrived at the human resources department, which was not in Building One but Building Three.

"Speaking of which," Wang Linchi began, "isn’t it a bit wrong for us to just leave like this? We agreed to stick to Building One earlier."

"It’s fine," Hand of God said, unconcerned. "It seems our earlier plan is unworkable. The area is too large, and the system too complex. We’ll have to play it by ear." The emphasis of their prior discussion had been on mutual assistance, not on rigidly sticking to one location.

Regardless of the identity they assumed, it was impossible to remain in Building One indefinitely. Patients would be transferred to other buildings for hospitalization, and Nurses would be assigned to work in various areas. The doctor identity would naturally be no exception.

"Alright then," Wang Linchi stated bluntly. "If they question me later, I’m using you as a shield."

This left Hand of God feeling a bit exasperated. "You’re trying to wash your hands of this completely, aren’t you?"

"Yes, so?" Wang Linchi retorted.

"You should at least share some of the responsibility. Otherwise, won’t they all just blame me?" Hand of God replied. This Linyuan Fish seems a bit tricky.

"Don’t worry. You’re Rank One. Even if they complain, they’ll only do it behind your back. They wouldn’t dare confront you openly," Wang Linchi said, essentially telling him to take the fall.

The three soon arrived at the human resources department.

"I’ll go in first," Wang Linchi said, pushing open the door to the Human Resources Department. "You two find a place to hide. Don’t let any Erroneous Sin catch you and use you as a sacrifice."

Once the door closed, it sealed off the inside from the outside. Hand of God and Green Plum Brews Wine couldn’t hear any commotion from within.

Hand of God asked, his expression unreadable, "What’s your take on this?"

"Fifty-fifty," Green Plum Brews Wine replied. "If he can really help us, it means he’s likely not an impostor. Then we’ll need to carefully vet the others."

"If Linyuan Fish is a Player, then things are about to get complicated," Hand of God said, rubbing his temples, his voice tinged with fatigue. "The other Players aren’t aligned with us. Once our group scatters, it will be easier for them to stir up trouble, and they’ll be better concealed. Why on earth did Calligraphy Linchi and Demon Slayer run off? Now this huge burden falls on me."

Green Plum Brews Wine mused aloud, "Calligraphy Linchi, Linyuan Fish... Do you think they might be connected somehow?"

"Who knows? Maybe their names just follow a similar pattern. There are plenty of Players like that," Hand of God said, not giving it much thought. Even if there was a connection, so what? It’s not like they’re the same person.
