Chapter 10: Chapter 10, The difference between courage and recklessness is experience

The forest grew noticeably quieter after Lin Yi killed the Spineback Lizard.

It was not the silence of peace.

It was the silence that followed surprise.

Several students were still staring at the monster lying motionless on the ground. Even though the creature was considered weak, the speed at which Lin Yi had killed it left everyone slightly unsettled.

After all, most of them were still struggling with the idea of fighting monsters for the first time.

Meanwhile, Lin Yi stood there calmly, the froststeel dagger resting loosely in his hand.

The blade had already returned to its faint silver glow, the cold energy around it slowly fading into the air.

Wang Hao was the first to break the silence.

He leaned closer to Lin Yi and spoke in a low voice.

"Brother Lin..."

Lin Yi glanced at him.

"Yes?"

Wang Hao pointed at the dead lizard.

"That thing attacked so fast I barely saw it move."

Lin Yi nodded.

"It was pretty quick."

Wang Hao’s expression twitched.

"Then how did you stab it like that?"

Lin Yi thought about it for a moment.

Then he answered honestly.

"I reacted."

Wang Hao stared at him.

"That explanation is not helping."

A few students nearby were whispering among themselves.

"Did you see that strike?"

"He pierced its skull in one motion..."

"Isn’t he a Laborer class?"

Zhang Wei walked over again, crouching beside the lizard’s corpse.

The experienced hunter studied the wound carefully.

The dagger had entered through the narrow gap between the creature’s skull plates.

Precise.

Clean.

And delivered with enough force to kill instantly.

Zhang Wei slowly stood up.

He looked at Lin Yi with slightly narrowed eyes.

"You’ve got good instincts."

Lin Yi smiled lightly.

"Thank you."

Zhang Wei crossed his arms.

"But instincts alone won’t keep you alive in the wilderness."

His tone wasn’t hostile.

Just firm.

"The difference between courage and recklessness is experience."

Lin Yi nodded.

"That sounds reasonable."

Zhang Wei gave him a final glance before addressing the rest of the group.

"Listen carefully."

His voice carried authority.

"This was a weak monster. Don’t get the wrong idea."

The students immediately straightened.

"Low level creatures can still kill you if you make mistakes," Zhang Wei continued. "Never assume you’re stronger than you are."

No one argued.

Even Lin Yi understood the point.

The system might give him an advantage, but overconfidence was the fastest way to die in a world like this.

Zhang Wei then kicked the corpse slightly.

"Alright. Since someone already handled this one, we’ll keep moving."

He gestured toward the deeper part of the forest.

The group resumed walking.

This time, however, several students occasionally glanced at Lin Yi while whispering quietly.

The reputation of the "E rank Laborer" had clearly changed a little.

Wang Hao leaned closer again.

"Brother Lin."

Lin Yi sighed.

"Yes?"

"You’re becoming famous."

Lin Yi chuckled.

"For killing a lizard?"

Wang Hao looked serious.

"You reacted faster than most combat classes."

Lin Yi shrugged.

"Maybe I’m talented."

Wang Hao looked like he didn’t know whether to laugh or believe him.

They continued walking for another fifteen minutes.

The forest gradually thickened around them.

Tall trees blocked much of the sunlight, leaving the ground covered in shadows.

Zhang Wei suddenly raised his hand again.

"Stop."

The group halted immediately.

This time his expression was slightly different.

More focused.

More cautious.

"What is it?" a student asked quietly.

Zhang Wei pointed toward a rocky slope ahead.

"Tracks."

Everyone leaned forward slightly.

At first glance, the ground looked normal.

But once they focused carefully, they noticed something unusual.

Large claw marks.

Deep ones.

Far larger than the wolves or boars they had seen earlier.

Wang Hao swallowed.

"That doesn’t look like a level two monster."

Zhang Wei nodded slowly.

"It isn’t."

The atmosphere immediately grew tense.

"What is it then?" someone whispered.

Zhang Wei examined the tracks one more time.

Then he stood up.

"Probably a Stoneback Bear."

Several students inhaled sharply.

Stoneback Bears were significantly more dangerous than anything they had encountered so far.

Their thick armored hide made them extremely difficult to kill for beginners.

Wang Hao whispered nervously to Lin Yi.

"That thing is around level five or six..."

Lin Yi remained calm.

At that moment, Su Qinghan stepped closer to Zhang Wei.

"Is it nearby?" she asked.

Zhang Wei shook his head.

"Hard to say."

He scanned the surrounding forest.

"These tracks are fresh, but the creature might already be moving away."

The students waited silently.

For a moment the only sound was the rustling of leaves.

Then—

CRACK.

A loud snapping noise echoed from the rocky slope.

Everyone turned instantly.

Something large was moving behind the trees.

Heavy footsteps followed.

Then the creature appeared.

The Stoneback Bear was enormous.

Its body towered over the surrounding bushes, covered in thick gray fur and plates of hardened stone-like skin along its back and shoulders.

Its small eyes glowed faintly with animal aggression.

The monster sniffed the air.

Then its gaze locked onto the group.

Wang Hao whispered hoarsely.

"...That’s definitely not level two."

Zhang Wei stepped forward immediately.

His hand moved to the large sword strapped across his back.

"Everyone stay behind me."

The students instinctively retreated a few steps.

The bear let out a deep growl.

The ground vibrated slightly as it began moving closer.

Lin Yi watched quietly, and a faint smile appeared on his face.

For most beginners, this monster would be terrifying.

But for him...

It might be the perfect opportunity, but the question was simple.

Should he step forward again?

Or let the experienced hunter handle it?
