Chapter 161: Chapter 161- This was ridiculous

Dave and Laurent were heading toward the vegetable rack when they turned a corner and came face-to-face with Clark, who was slowly pushing a cart toward them.

Neither of them had expected to run into Clark in a place like this, and both were momentarily stunned.

For Laurent, this was the first time she had met Clark in person. She had seen photos of Clark with Dave in his wallet before, received numerous calls and messages from her, and endured all kinds of harm at Clark’s hands.

To her, Clark was both a stranger and someone intimately familiar—after all, Clark had infiltrated her life in every possible way and remained an unresolved knot between her and Dave for years.

Clark was the first to greet them, her face adorned with a warm and graceful smile.

"Dave?"

"It’s been a long time..."

There wasn’t a hint of hostility toward Laurent in Clark’s expression, yet Laurent instinctively felt a chill run down her spine. A woman’s intuition is sharp and accurate—Laurent just knew that Clark’s peaceful demeanor was all an act!

Laurent admitted that Clark’s presence was deeply unsettling. No one would want to face the person who had smeared their reputation with malicious rumors.

Originally, Dave had been pushing the shopping cart, with Laurent resting one hand on the front edge as they walked together. But the moment she saw Clark, she let go of the cart, turned around, and walked away without hesitation.

She had no interest in dealing with a woman as deceitful as Clark.

However, just as she was about to leave, Dave grabbed her wrist. Furious, Laurent turned back and glared at him. If he wanted to catch up with his old flame, why drag her into it? It made her sick!

"Aren’t the vegetables that way?"

However, Dave simply held her hand, his gaze calm, and said, "Aren’t the vegetables that way?"

Laurent was momentarily stunned. So, he grabbed her just to remind her she was going in the wrong direction? Not to make her stay and listen to him catch up with his old flame?

She had indeed gone the wrong way. They had originally been heading to the vegetable rack, but after running into Clark, she had turned around and ended up back where they had just been.

While she was still in a daze, Dave held her hand, pushed the shopping cart with his other hand, and—without even sparing Clark a glance—led her away.

Dave hadn’t expected to run into Clark either, but he felt he had already made everything clear to her.

After discovering that Clark was the one spreading malicious rumors that had hurt Laurent, he had kicked her out of the villa where she had been recovering—a direct warning for her to stop.

In the past few days, Clark had made no further moves, and he hoped that meant she had taken the warning seriously and was finally behaving herself. They had been together once, and he wished her well, hoping she could start a new life instead of clinging to dark illusions of the past.

He wasn’t sure if Clark had shown up today on purpose or if it was just a coincidence that she happened to be shopping at the same supermarket. But either way, he had no intention of acknowledging her.

There was nothing more to say—no need to keep dragging things out.

They had been apart for five years, and whatever feelings they once had had long since faded away.

Five years—long enough to forget someone, long enough to fall in love with someone new.

No matter how their past had ended, no matter how forced their breakup had been, they both had to admit and accept that this was reality—harsh and unforgiving.

Left standing there, completely ignored, Clark’s once bright smile froze on her face. Her entire body stiffened as anger and humiliation surged through her, making her tremble with rage.

She never expected this.

She truly hadn’t expected this—Dave treating her with such cold indifference. Ever since she returned to the country and found him, he had been by her side, offering care and support. She thought he would always be that warm and gentle man to her.

She had believed that once he divorced Laurent, his heart would finally belong to her completely. But who would have thought that after the divorce, his heart had moved entirely toward Laurent instead?

To her, it was a devastating blow. Everything he had said and done since then felt like salt being mercilessly rubbed into her wounds. The pain was unbearable, yet she couldn’t cry out. That kind of despair was something only she could understand.

She stood there, face pale, her eyes fixed on the two of them as they walked away hand in hand. Her teeth clenched so tightly she nearly shattered them.

It was all because of that woman—Laurent. She must have used some underhanded trick to keep Dave wrapped around her little finger. Ha! Wasn’t it obvious? She was just relying on the fact that she had their daughter as leverage!

Meanwhile, Laurent, still holding Dave’s hand, stopped as they reached the vegetable rack and turned to look at him.

His expression was calm, showing no sign of sadness, regret, or any other emotion she had expected to see.

Laurent didn’t know the full story behind Dave and Clark’s falling-out. She had only heard Tiffany mention that they had cut ties, but she didn’t know how it had happened or to what extent.

She also had no idea that Dave had already kicked Clark out of the villa. Naturally, she assumed he still had feelings for her and that his cold treatment of Clark was just an act—to reassure Laurent and continue playing the role of a devoted husband.

That thought made her suspicious of his current indifference. She stared at him intently, trying to catch a crack in his façade.

Dave, noticing her gaze, urged her,

"What are you looking at? Hurry up and pick the vegetables."

She ignored him and continued staring.

Dave smirked. "Since you’re so mesmerized by my face, I might as well grant you what you want."

With that, he leaned down and kissed her lips.

Laurent was startled, instinctively covering her mouth as she took a step back. Her face, betraying her, flushed red as she furiously protested,

"What are you doing?!"

This was a public supermarket, for heaven’s sake! There were people all around!

Wasn’t he the one who hated being the center of attention? Then why was he doing something so blatantly attention-grabbing?

Out of the corner of her eye, she caught an elderly woman selecting vegetables, sneaking a glance at them with an amused smile.

Laurent wanted to disappear into the floor. This was beyond embarrassing.

"You kept staring at me, so I assumed you wanted me to kiss you. After all, it wouldn’t be the first time."

Dave’s response was completely justified, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

Laurent: "..."

Okay, fine. She had, in the past, used this exact tactic to get a kiss from him. She would hover around him, moving back and forth in his line of sight, then lean in close, her bright eyes locked onto his until he couldn’t take it anymore and kissed her just to shut her up.

But this time...

She had only been observing his emotions!

This was ridiculous.

She clutched her stomach.

He had officially annoyed her into a stomachache.
