You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 214- incapable of loving
She was still upset from their argument, and there was no way she was going to turn around and go back to him immediately. Besides, his IV had just been set up, and it would take a while for the whole bottle to finish. So, she simply sat there, lowered her head, and scrolled through her phone for a bit.
She took the opportunity to tell Vivian and the others about what had happened today. When Vivian heard that Dave had taken a stab wound for her, she fell silent. Even as a die-hard supporter of Leonardo, she couldn’t bring herself to say a single bad word about Dave after hearing this.
Yes, in the past, every time Vivian mentioned Dave, it was always with resentment—resentment that Dave had turned Laurent into who she was now, that he was cold and selfish, that he had treated Laurent poorly, that he didn’t have her in his heart. But now, in the face of this incident, all those complaints and grievances suddenly seemed meaningless.
Marylin chimed in:
"If a man is willing to risk his life for you, just marry him."
She quickly corrected herself.
"Oh wait, I mean, just marry him again."
Laurent couldn’t help but burst into laughter at Marylin’s words. The bad mood caused by Dave’s cold attitude instantly lightened.
Vivian, however, wasn’t convinced.
"No, no, no! Laurent, you can’t just agree to get back together with him so easily."
"Listen to me, you absolutely cannot soften up. You have to make Dave go through some serious trials. You’re in no rush—he’s the one who should be anxious. Drag it out for a year or two before even considering getting back with him!"
Vivian firmly believed that after all those years of Dave’s indifference toward Laurent, Laurent should now return the favor—double. She wanted Laurent to crush Dave’s arrogance completely so that by the time he had no temper left and truly cherished her, then—and only then—should she consider reconciliation.
Laurent laughed and replied to Vivian:
"A year or two? I was thinking of dragging it out for three to five years."
Vivian sent a thumbs-up emoji:
"Awesome! Absolutely awesome! Laurent, I support you! Drag it out for three to five years—let him age into a grumpy old man before he dares act arrogant again!"
Marylin rolled her eyes:
"Come on, you two. If you drag it out for three to five years, Washington’s great lord will be pushing forty. What about his and Laurent’s second child?"
Vivian protested against Marylin’s blatant support for Dave:
"I have to say, as someone who doesn’t even have a man, what right do you have to talk about a second child? How about you get a first one yourself and show me?"
Marylin laughed:
"Don’t push me. Be careful—I just might go and have a kid someday."
As Laurent read their conversation, the corners of her lips curved into a smile.
As for Dave, aside from today’s major incident, she could feel through every little moment they had spent together recently that he truly loved her.
However, just as Vivian had said, she wasn’t planning to reconcile with him so easily. Before getting back together, she had to make sure he fixed his bad habit of sulking and giving the cold shoulder every time something upset him.
He had always been like this—most of the time, when he was unhappy, he would just go silent and start a cold war. Why couldn’t he just say what was on his mind instead of bottling everything up? Laurent was the complete opposite—if she had something to say, she said it. Good communication cleared up misunderstandings and saved everyone a lot of unnecessary frustration.
Just as she was about to put her phone away and head back to the hospital room, Leonardo suddenly called. She answered, and on the other end, he asked worriedly,
"I heard about what happened today. Are you okay? You weren’t hurt, were you?"
Laurent briefly explained her situation and also told him about Dave’s injury. There was a long silence on the other end before Leonardo finally spoke, his voice tinged with bitterness.
"Laurent, I wish you happiness."
Then, after a pause, he added,
"This time, I really mean it. I truly wish you happiness."
Any man who heard about Dave’s actions would probably find it impossible to keep clinging to Laurent. After all, not every man would take such a brutal knife attack for a woman. If he didn’t truly love and care for her, why would he risk his life like that?
Hearing Leonardo’s blessing, Laurent simply responded with a "Thank you." It was a relief to finally hear him offer a genuine, heartfelt blessing.
Leonardo then asked,
"Oh, by the way, I wanted to ask you something—why can’t I get through to Zoey? Have any of you been able to reach her?"
He explained,
"I just got a new script. The character is an executive at a multinational company, and I wanted to get some insights from her—to understand the role better and make it more authentic."
"Zoey’s phone isn’t connecting?"
Laurent was also puzzled. No wonder Zoey hadn’t appeared in their group chat earlier.
"Hold on a sec, I’ll check with Marylin and Vivian to see if they know anything."
Leonardo agreed to wait for an update.
After hanging up, Laurent tried calling Zoey, but there was no answer. She then reached out to Marylin and Vivian, but neither of them knew why Zoey had suddenly gone off the radar.
The three of them couldn’t help but grow concerned.
Then, Laurent remembered that she had Zoey’s business card. She quickly found it and gave Leonardo the number for Zoey’s company.
"Try calling the front desk at her office. Maybe they’ll know what’s going on."
Leonardo agreed and said he’d follow up.
After finishing her call with Leonardo, Laurent returned to the hospital room. Dave had already fallen asleep.
Standing by the bedside, she looked at his furrowed brows and sighed softly. He was in this state, yet he still insisted on sending her away. What if the IV finished and no one was there to notice? What if his blood pressure dropped again? 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
She reached out and gently adjusted his blanket. The slight movement startled him, causing him to turn his head slightly to the side and murmur her name in his sleep.
"Laurent..."
Her hand froze mid-motion.
Her gaze lingered on his exhausted face.
Even in the days when she had been most infatuated with him, he had never called her name in his sleep like this.
He didn’t seem to be sleeping peacefully, nor did he look happy. His brows remained tightly furrowed. At that moment, Laurent felt he was both distant and close—
This Dave, the one willing to sacrifice everything for her, felt unfamiliar and far away.
But this weak, injured man, lying just inches from her, was still him.
Since their divorce, when he said he loved her, she had gone from outright disbelief to tentative trust, and now—to an inability to believe it at all.
She didn’t know why she felt so uncertain.
When he hadn’t loved her before, she had been full of confidence, unable to understand why he didn’t like her.
But now that he did, now that he loved her so deeply, she found herself doubting. She didn’t know what she had done to deserve such devotion.
Laurent didn’t know what was wrong with her.
Had being hurt by him once made her incapable of loving again?
