Chapter 216: Chapter 216- Love means different things to different people

Dave had already been upset about her taking Leonardo’s call, and now with her attitude, he was even more frustrated.

At that moment, Tiffany knocked and entered, bringing Dave his meal. Seeing the cold and distant atmosphere between them, she couldn’t help but sigh inwardly. What was going on? Tiffany had thought that after this incident, the two of them would finally put their differences aside and reconcile.

But who would have known, the afternoon passed, and things only became more tense. She felt it was time to have a talk with her son.

So, she said to Laurent, "I’ve already brought Emma back, she’s at Lilian’s. I didn’t tell her about Dave’s injury. You’ve been here all afternoon, why don’t you go rest for a while? I’ll stay here and look after things."

Laurent also felt that given the increasingly awkward atmosphere between her and Dave, it was no longer appropriate for him to stay, so he grabbed his things and looked at Dave.

"Then I’ll head back. Take care and rest," he said

Dave didn’t respond, so Laurent had no choice but to say goodbye to Tiffany before leaving.

After he left, Tiffany glanced at her son’s reluctant expression and sighed, "You clearly don’t want her to leave, clearly need her, so why do you have to act so cold?"

When his mother pointed out the core issue, Dave turned his eyes away.

"I don’t want her to stay and take care of me just because she’s grateful that I saved her..."

Tiffany immediately understood the reason for her son’s awkwardness ever since he woke up. After thinking for a moment, she spoke to him:

"But you have to understand, if someone else had protected her today, she would still stay and take care of them. It’s normal for her to feel grateful to the person who took a knife for her."

"Are you expecting her to remain indifferent? That would make her cold-blooded, wouldn’t it?"

Tiffany spoke slowly.

"She first needs to feel gratitude towards you, and only then will other emotions towards you grow. The sympathy, the love, the acceptance you want, all of that is based on the gratitude she feels for you."

Tiffany’s words made Dave frown, and they made him think deeply.

Ever since he woke up, he had been bothered by the idea that she was staying only because of gratitude. But if she weren’t grateful, if she ignored him completely, that cold-hearted Laurent wasn’t someone she would want either.

"So, what’s the point of being so awkward? Won’t that just push her further away?"

Tiffany once again tried to wake her son up.

"You’ve always been proud, haven’t you? Otherwise, you and Laurent would’ve had a happy and fulfilling marriage long ago."

Then Tiffany added, "Maybe by now, you’d even have a second child."

When they were still together and hadn’t divorced yet, Tiffany had actually mentioned having a second child to Laurent, and at the time, Laurent didn’t oppose it.

But just a few days later, they ended up in a divorce, and the idea of a second child was completely dashed.

Tiffany hadn’t brought up the idea of a second child because she wanted a son, as she didn’t have that kind of preference for boys over girls. She just thought that since Lilian was already in kindergarten and didn’t need much adult care, and Laurent was at the perfect age, whether the second child was a boy or a girl, having two children would be good for them to grow up together.

As Tiffany brought up the old discussion about a second child, Dave felt a pang in his chest.

He hadn’t forgotten that the night before, they had been making love and talking about having a second child, and the very next day, she had brought up the divorce in front of so many people.

Although his son had never really responded to her words, Tiffany felt that he had taken in quite a bit, so she didn’t say anything more.

Dave ate the meal Tiffany had carefully prepared for him.

After leaving the hospital, Laurent drove to Lilian’s place. His daughter, Emma Washington, was having a blast playing with Lilian. The two girls were making such a racket that Laurent felt envious of Lilian’s carefree life.

When Lilian saw him, she got up from the sofa, fixed her messy hair from playing with her niece, and said,

"Laurent, sis, you haven’t had dinner, right? Mom saved some for you. Go wash your hands and eat."

After Tiffany had picked up her granddaughter, she sent Emma to her daughter’s place and made dinner there.

Lilian protested in discontent.

"Mom, why didn’t you send Emma to Dad’s? I’m having dinner with friends tonight. He’s Emma’s guardian, so it’d be perfect for him to take care of her, right?"

In fact, Lilian didn’t have any plans that night. Ever since her falling out with someone, she had been hiding at home, too afraid to go out.

The only reason she said that was that she hoped her mother and father could communicate more.

However, her mother was absolutely stubborn and ignored her protest.

"If you have a date, just tell them you’ve canceled. Right now, your brother is in the hospital, and it’s more important for you to help look after the kids."

Lilian snorted angrily. Her father was just sitting around doing nothing—why did he have to be sent here to her?

Lilian didn’t mind taking care of the child. After all, it was just playing with the little girl, and she was enjoying herself. She just felt that it wasn’t quite right how her mother was keeping her father at a distance.

Laurent hadn’t expected Tiffany to save dinner for her, and she felt quite touched. When she came out after washing her hands, Lilian had already set the meal on the table. Laurent felt a bit embarrassed.

"Thank you."

"We’re family, why are you being so polite?" Lilian said casually.

The little girl came over and rested on her lap.

"Mom, why didn’t Dad come to see me today?"

Lilian quickly responded, "Didn’t Lady Tiffany say? He’s on a business trip for the next few days, but he’ll be back soon. He even said he’ll buy you a doll."

Laurent understood the hint in Lilian’s words and reached out to gently stroke her daughter’s soft hair, comforting her in a warm voice.

"Mm, Dad’s on a business trip."

It was better for the little girl not to know about such dangerous matters for now

When she heard Laurent say that her dad was on a business trip, the little girl stopped asking and went off to play after pestering Laurent for a while.

Laurent was eating, while Lilian sat across from her. She was half-leaning on the table, resting her chin on her hands, with her long eyelashes fluttering.

After a while, Lilian suddenly let out a long sigh and then asked her,

"Laurent, what do you think love is? Does true love really exist in this world?"

When Laurent heard this, she immediately sensed something was off in Lilian’s tone and asked her,

"Are you in a relationship?"

"No!"

Lilian quickly denied it.

"I was just reflecting on my brother’s situation today."

"He risked his life for you today, so he must love you, right?"

Lilian asked with wide, innocent eyes, but this was a question Laurent couldn’t answer.

She couldn’t speak for Dave and say whether he loved her, nor could she answer Lilian’s question about whether true love really exists in this world.

Love means different things to different people. The only love that feels real is the one you experience yourself. What you hear from others can’t really be considered love.

There was a knock on the door from outside. Lilian snapped out of her thoughts, stood up, and went to open the door.

"Who could it be at this late hour? My mom has a key..."

Lilian muttered to herself as she went to open the door, and Laurent continued eating.

When Laurent heard Lilian open the door and there was silence for a while, she got up to check and found that the person standing outside was Morrison.

When Lilian saw Laurent coming, she immediately gave Morrison a deep bow and respectfully greeted him.

"Hello, boss."

Then she turned back to look at Laurent.

"Laurent, our boss is here. Is he looking for you?"

After saying that, she quickly darted back into the room, not noticing the man behind her, whose teeth were gritted in frustration.
