You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 255- we slept quite well
Bert had initially thought that Clark would be difficult to deal with, especially given his seemingly high-minded demeanor. He had prepared extensively for their interaction, assuming that Clark would be difficult to sway. However, after subtly hinting to Clark that he was the eldest son of Burg Eltz and that he might be in line to join the Washington family, Clark’s stance wavered unexpectedly. To Bert’s disappointment, he didn’t get the reaction he had anticipated from Dave either. There was no great emotional upheaval or crisis; instead, Dave chose to step away from Clark and let him go.
Daniel, for his part, had acted decisively, using Clark’s involvement with him as an excuse to keep him out of the picture, effectively forcing him to stay in the U.S. and stop making waves. For Bert, this situation had been frustrating—he had been eager for Clark’s suffering, hoping for a more dramatic turn of events, but all of his efforts seemed to fall flat.
During the time he was with Clark, Bert had transferred all of his anger and frustration onto her, torturing her in various ways to regain some semblance of control and emotional balance. The real issue was Clark’s insistence on having a child after hearing about Laurent giving birth to Dave’s daughter. Clark’s jealousy had led her to push for a pregnancy, but Bert wasn’t having it. He could never allow Clark to have a child, especially not under those circumstances.
Bert had always taken precautions against pregnancy, but Clark had gone behind his back, repeatedly becoming pregnant despite his efforts. In the end, Bert had no choice but to force Clark to abort, a decision he made out of personal conviction—he simply didn’t want children. He couldn’t bear the thought of subjecting his own child to the same neglect and emotional pain he had endured in his own life, growing up without proper parental care.
What truly frustrated Bert was that he had no intention of spending his life with Clark. To him, she was nothing more than a trophy, something to be claimed in his ongoing rivalry with Dave. As far as he was concerned, Clark’s desire to have a child with him was absurd, and the situation had only further cemented his resolve not to father any children. He had no interest in continuing a relationship with her, and he would not let her trap him into something he never wanted.
Bert justified his actions by reasoning that Clark wasn’t entirely innocent in this scenario. If it weren’t for her desire for wealth and status, she wouldn’t have been so easily deceived by him. He believed that if she hadn’t pushed for a child, none of this would have happened, and he would never have been forced to make the decision to end her pregnancies, leaving her infertile. He convinced himself that Clark was simply after Dave’s wealth and image, not the man himself.
In Bert’s mind, he had done Dave a favor by taking Clark out of the picture—after all, by removing her, he had paved the way for Dave to find Laurent. To Bert, this was a form of service to Dave, as it had helped bring about the current relationship between Dave and Laurent.
As the evening progressed and Bert insisted on Laurent’s company, Dave responded with a cold smile. His tone was calm but firm as he addressed Bert, making it clear that Laurent was not available for his games.
"It’s a pity," Dave said with a smirk, "this beauty’s private time is all mine, and she doesn’t have time for Soul’s eating and drinking adventures. I’m afraid your wish will go unfulfilled." 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞
He chuckled again, a knowing look in his eyes.
"I thought Soul might prefer my company, though. After all, I could show him exactly what he wants to see—the Washington estate, the lordship, the father... and, of course, the Washington family."
With that, Dave made it clear that Bert’s playful challenge wasn’t something he was willing to entertain.
Dave’s words were a sharp and mocking jab, peeling back the raw wounds Bert had long tried to hide.
The most painful thing for Bert in this world was not being recognized by Burg Eltz or not earning the acknowledgment of the Washington family. Those were the things that truly stung, and Dave had hit right at the heart of it with his cold words. The smile on Bert’s face disappeared in an instant, his jaw tightening, showing the anger bubbling beneath the surface.
In that moment, the air between them was thick with tension. Bert’s gaze was laced with fury, but Dave remained unfazed, locking eyes with him, neither man willing to back down. It was clear that Dave wasn’t acting out of impulse when he intervened to protect Laurent. He had been planning to confront Bert from the beginning, but the opportunity had only just presented itself when Bert had crossed a line with Laurent.
This confrontation wasn’t just a random display of aggression. Dave wanted Bert to know, without a doubt, the power he wielded. He wanted Bert to understand that he was not someone to be trifled with, that any attempt to challenge him or Laurent would be met with fierce resistance. It was a warning, a declaration of his dominance.
But after a tense moment of silence, Bert finally let out a soft, dismissive laugh.
"Since Miss Laurent doesn’t have time, I suppose I’ll let it go for now," he said, his tone sharp yet feigning indifference.
With that, Bert turned and walked past them, heading for the elevator, clearly choosing to retreat rather than escalate things further.
Laurent, still in Dave’s embrace, glanced over at the direction Bert had gone before looking back up at Dave. Dave didn’t say a word, but he kept his arms around her, leading them both away, leaving the confrontation behind them.
In the car on the way back to Laurent’s place, they didn’t speak much. The tension between them had been thick after dealing with Bert, and with their daughter staying over at Tiffany’s, it was just Dave and Laurent alone at home.
As soon as they entered the house, Dave pushed Laurent against the wall, pulling her into a kiss. Laurent had been disturbed by Bert’s actions all night, and now with Dave seeking comfort, she gave in, wrapping her arms around his neck in return.
In that moment, they both allowed themselves to forget the troubles and the people who had been causing them stress. They lost themselves in each other’s embrace, the physical pleasure drowning out everything else. Dave’s kiss was intense, passionate, yet silent, but Laurent could feel everything he was trying to express. She knew that beneath his calm exterior, facing Bert had stirred something deep within him, something he wasn’t letting show.
She did her best to reciprocate, to comfort him with her touch while silently communicating her feelings for him. In their union, there was no room for doubt or betrayal.
The following morning, early, Laurent’s phone rang. It was Bert.
Dave woke up too, and seeing Bert’s name on the screen, he immediately reached for Laurent’s phone, intending to answer it for her.
But Laurent shook her head, signaling that she would take the call herself. When she answered, Bert’s voice came through the line, clear and teasing.
"Miss Laurent, did you sleep well last night?"
His tone dripped with smugness, as though he believed that after his interference, neither she nor Dave would have had a peaceful night.
But Bert was wrong. Last night, after the intense connection between them, they both slept soundly.
"Thanks to Mr. Soul, we slept quite well," Laurent replied, deliberately using "we," making sure to emphasize that she and Dave had been fine.
There was a pause on the other end of the line, and Laurent could almost hear the shift in Bert’s mood.
Laurent, still on the phone, said, "Mr. Soul, I understand. Is there anything else you need to discuss?"
Bert, on the other end, paused for a moment before responding with a light laugh. "Oh, it’s nothing urgent. I just wanted to inform you that I won’t be going to your company today to discuss business. I have some personal matters to attend to, and I’m meeting with an elder."
Laurent had a good guess as to who Bert was referring to but didn’t comment further. She simply responded, "Alright, I understand. I’ll be busy with other matters today. I wish you all the best with your meeting."
With that, she hung up the phone.
Since the call had been on speaker, Dave had heard the conversation as well. Laurent looked at him and said, "He’s going to see his uncle?"
She was referring to Daniel, and Dave responded with a dismissive grunt. "Well, that’s his father. It’s no big deal if they meet up."
Laurent, however, was still concerned. "But he always manages to upset his uncle so much. I don’t know what will happen this time. And with the way things are between Uncle Daniel and Aunt Tiffany right now, if Bert shows up to stir things up again..."
Laurent trailed off. She didn’t need to say more. Ever since Tiffany had kicked Daniel out in front of all the younger family members, their relationship had been strained and full of tension. The fact that Bert was now returning and planning to meet Daniel at this time only added more fuel to the fire. The situation seemed to be getting messier by the minute.
