Chapter 259: Chapter 259- fault

Daniel was first stunned by Bert’s obsessive and irresponsible words. Then, anger overwhelmed him, and he clutched his chest, collapsing back into his seat, gasping for air.

It was all his fault. All of it.

His foolishness in his youth had led to all the turmoil and conflict they faced now.

How could he resolve all this resentment and hatred? How could he help them let go of their grudges?

Both of them were his sons. Deep down, he hoped they could get along in peace. He didn’t expect them to be like other brothers, always harmonious and respectful, but at the very least, he wished they didn’t have to be in such direct opposition.

Once Bert set his sights on taking Washington, Dave would inevitably fight back. One of them would end up hurt. No father would want to see his sons like this.

After sitting for a while, Daniel finally calmed down. He picked up his phone and called Dave. Since Bert’s intentions were so clear now, he needed to understand the current situation in more detail.

Moreover, things were now tied up with Laurent. Daniel knew very well what had transpired between Dave and Laurent. He also understood just how much Dave cared for Laurent. If Bert ended up hurting Laurent, Daniel feared that the fragile peace he had recently begun to build with Dave would shatter once again. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

The weight of everything Daniel was facing almost crushed him. Tiffany was threatening him with divorce, and they were nearing the one-year mark of their separation. Was he really going to watch helplessly as their separation reached the two-year mark and the court declared their divorce?

And his two sons—if his relationship with the eldest improved, his relationship with the youngest would inevitably strain, and vice versa.

It was said that even the wisest judge couldn’t resolve family disputes, and after years of navigating the business world, Daniel felt a deep sense of hopelessness about his current situation.

The phone call with Dave connected, and before Daniel could say anything, Dave’s calm voice came from the other end.

"You don’t need to get involved in this. I’ll handle it."

Dave already knew that Bert had gone to see Daniel, so he quickly figured out why Daniel was calling and asked him not to interfere. Dave believed that Daniel had no role to play here. The management of Washington was now in Dave’s hands, and if Bert wanted to fight, it would be with him, not Daniel. Bert’s aim was simply to irritate Daniel.

Daniel opened his mouth, hesitated, and then reluctantly spoke.

"I heard this involves Laurent... I’m worried it might hurt her..."

There was a trace of fear in Daniel’s voice. After the divorce, he and Laurent had finally reconciled, and everyone knew how important Laurent was to Dave.

Dave could hear the unease in Daniel’s tone. His father’s anxiousness made Dave feel a twinge of sympathy, but as he thought about the chaos and turmoil that had resulted from Daniel’s actions, he couldn’t help but feel frustrated. He asked on the phone,

"Do you have a better solution?"

Daniel fell silent.

If Daniel had a better solution, he wouldn’t be in this situation to begin with.

"Alright, I’ve told you, you don’t need to worry about it. I have a meeting to attend. I’ll hang up now."

That was all Dave said before ending the call.

However, Daniel called back shortly after, telling him that Tiffany had caught a cold and was unwell, asking him to visit her. After hanging up, Dave immediately called his mother.

Tiffany assured him on the other end of the line that it wasn’t anything serious—just a common cold. The family doctor from Burg Eltz had already seen her and prescribed some medicine.

Hearing that the family doctor had already checked on her, Dave felt a little more at ease. His mother was getting older, and any slight discomfort worried him greatly.

Still, he couldn’t help but realize that it was unlikely his mother had called the family doctor herself. Knowing her personality, she wouldn’t have bothered unless Daniel had arranged it. It was clear that Daniel had been behind the call.

Tiffany also mentioned that her cold was severe enough that she didn’t want to risk infecting the kids, so she asked Dave to handle the school runs with Laurent for the next few days. Dave agreed without hesitation.

It was after work when a cheerful young employee was packing up, ready to head out for dinner and karaoke with her friends. Suddenly, she received a call on her office phone from the boss, who, with an undeniably commanding tone, ordered,

"Let’s leave together after work."

The employee paused for a moment before responding with genuine sincerity,

"But we’ve broken up, haven’t we? It doesn’t seem appropriate to leave together after work..."

There was a noticeable silence on the other end of the line, and it seemed that the boss was caught off guard, clearly frustrated. The employee could almost feel the teeth-gritting irritation through the phone.

She felt innocent, really. She was simply speaking the truth—since they had broken up, leaving together after work might affect his flirtatious reputation. Hadn’t he recently started seeing a model with a stunning figure? What if his new girlfriend found out about his lingering ties to his ex? That would surely cause a scene, so it was better to keep some distance.

Besides, it had been a long time since they had broken up, and they hadn’t kept in touch. Why was he suddenly asking her to leave with him today? Was he out of his mind?

There was a long pause on the other end, and finally, the employee decided to speak up,

"If there’s nothing else, I’ll hang up now. I have plans to go out with my colleagues."

Just as she was about to hang up, she heard a male colleague calling her from the side,

"Lilian, hurry up, we’re waiting for you!"

"I’m coming, I’m coming!" she replied.

She told the person on the phone goodbye, about to hang up, but the boss finally spoke, his voice full of anger,

"Meet me in the underground parking garage, or I’ll come to your office and drag you out."

This shook Lilian to her core. There was no way she was going to let him come to her office, so she stomped her foot in frustration and said,

"Fine, I’ll meet you in the parking garage!"

With that, she angrily hung up and turned to her colleagues, apologizing for backing out of their plans. Although they were a bit disappointed, they understood and headed off to have fun without her. Lilian stayed behind in the office until almost everyone had left, before she sluggishly took the elevator down to the underground parking garage.

From a distance, she saw a figure standing next to her car. The man was dressed in a long, British-style coat, wearing hand-made leather shoes tailored to perfection. He stood tall, his posture straight, exuding an air of elegance and calm.

Lilian couldn’t help but sigh inwardly. Dating a man like him, radiant and imposing, left her with no regrets.

She walked up and stood before him, putting on a casual smile, as if they had never had that kind of relationship.

"Morrison, is there something you need from me?"

The man in front of her glared at her with an intensity that could almost pierce through her, as if he were about to devour her. After a long, tense pause, he spoke in a cold, commanding tone:

"Bert’s back. Your brother asked me to ensure your safety, so I’m driving you home."

Lilian quickly waved her hands in protest, "Oh, it’s really fine. I’m grown up now; what could possibly happen to me?"

"Get in the car."

Her refusal was met with the same two sharp words, ice-cold and unyielding. She glanced at him, resigned, then unlocked her car and got in.

Well, fine, if he insisted, she would just let him drive her.
