Chapter 287: Chapter 287- Perks

Isn’t it said that after drinking, people speak their true thoughts?

When someone is completely drunk and has lost their sense of awareness, the words they say are surely the deepest thoughts from their heart.

And after drinking, Dave kept mentioning their daughter. This deep affection was something to be trusted.

Cassy took out her phone and called her daughter, telling her that since Dave was drunk, it would be better for him to stay with her daughter for the night. Laurent, confused, asked,

"Drunk?"

In Laurent’s impression, Dave should be a very self-controlled person, and today he had met her father, so the atmosphere should have been somewhat serious. How could he still dare to get drunk?

Cassy then explained everything about Dave’s interaction with Alex to her daughter, and also told her that Alex had somewhat softened his stance. Laurent immediately understood why Dave had gotten drunk.

He was just too happy, too excited, and had no other way to express it except through getting drunk.

There was nothing more to say, but Laurent still reminded her mother,

"Just don’t let him drink anymore tonight, otherwise his stomach really won’t handle it."

"Mm, I’ll make him some light food tonight to help soothe his stomach."

Cassy agreed and then, after a moment of thought, put the phone on speaker and walked over to the bedroom door, letting her daughter hear some of the sweet words Dave was saying at that moment.

After listening, Laurent’s face turned red. She had never heard him speak such straightforward and explicit words before.

Something like "my Laurent," it was just... unbelievable...

But she thought it should be kept as a memory. It was rare for him to speak so passionately, so she pressed the recording button, capturing a few lines, planning to bring it up to tease him the next time he bullied her.

Then, a bit embarrassed, she said to her mother,

"Sorry to trouble you, but I’m really busy here. I’ll come back when I have time."

Cassy naturally understood,

"Don’t worry, focus on your work."

After they hung up, Laurent replayed the recording of what Dave had said just now. The smile on her face was impossible to hide.

Mutual affection—it was the most wonderful and beautiful phrase in the world.

In the evening, Dave woke up. His head still felt a bit heavy, but at least his mind was clear.

However, he felt that Alex was looking at him with a look of disdain. He thought maybe he had said something inappropriate while drunk, so he secretly called his daughter over to ask,

"Why does Grandpa seem upset? Did I say something wrong when I was drunk?"

Dave was a little frustrated. He had finally earned Alex’s approval, and now he worried that he might have ruined it all by saying something he shouldn’t have while drunk.

The little girl pursed her lips and laughed,

"Daddy, you’re so silly!"

Dave was confused,

"What do you mean?"

The little girl leaned over to his ear and mischievously whispered,

"Daddy kept shouting that he loves Mommy when he was drunk. Grandpa said it was too cheesy, and he got goosebumps all over."

The little girl had started to repeat what others said, and she perfectly imitated Alex’s words when she passed them on to Dave.

After hearing this, Dave let out a long sigh of relief. His heart finally settled back into place.

So that was why Alex seemed so disgusted with him. However, Dave didn’t mind at all, because those words were a reflection of his love for Laurent.

For dinner, Cassy made some light food for Dave, just as Laurent had instructed.

At the dinner table, Alex continued to wear a look of disdain,

"Such poor drinking manners, shouting all afternoon!"

Dave smiled and responded,

"Yes, yes, yes, you’re right. I’ll definitely improve in the future."

Then he added,

"It’s just that I was really happy today."

"I think it’s just right."

Dave thought his drinking manners were fine, but today he had indeed gotten a bit carried away because he was so happy about receiving Alex’s approval.

Alex snorted and couldn’t be bothered to respond, lowering his head to continue eating.

The atmosphere at the dinner table was fairly harmonious. Since Dave had gotten drunk, he stayed over for the night. After dinner, he spent some time chatting with Alex and Cassy in the living room. Later, when his daughter Emma said she was tired, he went to the bedroom to tuck her in.

After he left, Cassy quickly turned to Alex and said,

"I think he’s really changed this time. The old him—"

Cassy trailed off, trying to find a few words to describe the old Dave, but she couldn’t quite find the right words. It was hard to describe the feeling, so she just said,

"You know what the old him was like."

Alex slowly spoke,

"To use a word that’s popular these days, he’s really sincere this time."

Cassy laughed,

"Well, you old man are quite trendy, knowing about this ’sincere’ thing."

But even though Cassy mocked Alex like this, she had to admit that the word Alex used was actually spot-on.

The biggest change in Dave this time was his sincerity, which was what Alex referred to as "being sincere."

He had used his heart to treat their daughter, and in turn, he used his heart to treat them as well. This was something that could be felt.

This time, he really had changed. Otherwise, Alex wouldn’t have given him his approval. When you treat others with sincerity, they will naturally return that sincerity.

After Dave had tucked his daughter in, he himself tossed and turned on the big bed.

It wasn’t because he couldn’t sleep from the effects of the afternoon nap after drinking; it was purely because of his yearning.

He missed someone terribly. It had only been one day since they last saw each other, and now they couldn’t sleep together tonight. The feeling was... unbearable.

But the woman he missed so much still hadn’t called him.

This made him even more restless. Could she be out at some gathering, singing and drinking? Otherwise, why hadn’t she called him?

With this thought in mind, he simply couldn’t stay still any longer. He sat up, grabbed his phone, and dialed her number.

The phone rang for a long time before someone finally answered. It was her voice, drowsy with sleep, that came through the line,

"What’s wrong?"

Dave had been annoyed, wondering if she was still out somewhere, but as soon as he heard her voice, he was momentarily stunned. It was clearly the response of someone who had been woken up from their sleep. Confused, he asked,

"Are you already asleep? Why are you sleeping so early?" 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

He glanced at the clock on the wall— it was only 9:30, not even 10 o’clock yet.

Her lazy voice came through again,

"It’s rare for me to have a night without kids or men, so of course, I’m going to enjoy it and get a good beauty sleep."

Laurent had indeed done as she said, going to bed early. Without children to bother her, and most importantly, without a man bothering her, she was enjoying a peaceful beauty sleep.

After spending the whole day with clients, she had declined to join them for dinner with others, had a simple meal on her own, then returned home. She played a warm, soothing song, did a little housework, washed some clothes, and then went to bed.

It was comfortable and relaxing.

Hearing Laurent talk about enjoying a night without a man to get some beauty sleep, Dave couldn’t help but laugh softly to himself,

"Are you protesting against our ’overexertion’ last night?"

On the other end, Laurent responded with a tone full of exasperation,

"Do you think so?"

For Laurent, working at the company every day was tiring enough, and when she got home at night, all she wanted was a good night’s sleep. But Dave still wanted her attention, and although it wasn’t every day, she still felt it was a bit too frequent.

Dave seriously thought for a moment before answering,

"I think it’s just right."

Laurent, "..."

Of course, he thought it was just right, otherwise, he wouldn’t have done it.

"Or... what do you think would be appropriate, once a week?"

Since they were already on the topic, Dave decided to ask for her opinion. Laurent blushed on the other end, irritated by his shamelessness, and intentionally teased him,

"I think once a week is appropriate."

He raised his voice on the other end,

"Once a week? Are you sure?"

"Of course."

Laurent continued to hold her ground, while Dave gritted his teeth and declared his own needs,

"I think at least three times a week is normal. Scientific research shows that a healthy amount of intimate time is good for mental and physical well-being—"

The more he spoke, the more ridiculous he sounded. Laurent immediately interrupted him,

"Alright, alright, let’s end this. I need to go to sleep."

"No, you can’t hang up."

Dave refused to let go, clinging to her on the other end,

"What should I do? I can’t stand not seeing you for just one day, I feel like I need to be with you right now."

His words were so cheesy that Laurent couldn’t help but think back to the cheesy things he had said while drunk today. She couldn’t help but laugh on the other end.

The tables had truly turned—before, it was always her who clung to him, saying passionate things, not being able to live without him. Sometimes he would just go to work in the morning and return at night, and she’d feel like she missed him every second. Now, though, it was him constantly saying sweet things to her and clinging to her.

"What are you laughing at?"

Dave was unhappy. He was clearly confessing his feelings for her, and her laughing now felt like she was mocking those feelings.

Laurent smiled even wider. She wouldn’t tell him that she had recorded his cheesy drunk words earlier. Instead, she teased him,

"Well, then you can just come back right now."

He asked,

"What benefits will I get if I come back?"

Laurent casually replied,

"Whatever benefits you want, you’ll get them."

She said it carelessly, thinking he wouldn’t really come back in the middle of the night. After all, their daughter was still there. But Dave, on the other hand, had a sudden desire to return.

He hadn’t planned to stay the night, but since he had drunk too much at lunch, he had slept the whole afternoon and still didn’t have much energy by dinnertime. But now, late at night, he had found his energy again.

Moreover, her words about "many benefits" had stirred something in him. After hanging up, he glanced at his daughter, who was sound asleep, then stood up to start putting on his clothes.

"Many benefits?" Hmm, it seemed like there were a lot of benefits he hadn’t fully enjoyed, and there were some he had experienced but hadn’t thoroughly savored—like, perhaps, letting her be the one to take the lead for once?
