You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 289- really happy.
Over the past year, Laurent’s hard work had significantly improved their financial situation. So now, even though Dave had lost Washington Co., their lives hadn’t fallen into chaos or ruin.
Had it been before—back when she still relied entirely on Dave to survive—his fall would have meant the collapse of their whole household. She would’ve been like a parasite, unable to sustain herself, nearly starving the moment Dave was gone.
But now? Life carried on just the same.
Some might say she was too much of a tough woman. Some might say she was a fool. Everyone has their own values and philosophy in life. She couldn’t control what others thought, and she wouldn’t be controlled by them either. As long as she and the people she cared about could live with peace of mind and comfort, that was enough.
And although this weekend had been exhausting, it was a fruitful one—for both Dave and Laurent.
On Dave’s end, he had finally earned Alex’s approval. While Alex hadn’t given a full blessing for his daughter to marry him, his attitude had clearly shifted to one of acceptance. It was only a matter of time now.
As for Laurent, she had spent the weekend hosting clients—and just as they were about to leave, they suddenly placed two massive orders, catching her completely off guard.
One of the clients had looked at her sincerely and said:
"I’m a workaholic with a short fuse. To put it bluntly—I’m selfish. I bring up work no matter the time or setting. When inspiration strikes, I’ll call in the middle of the night without caring about time zones or whether people are asleep. A lot of people I’ve worked with have complained about this part of me... but you didn’t."
Laurent opened her mouth to say something, but he gently cut her off:
"I know—you’re about to say ’the customer is always right.’ Everyone says that. But whether someone truly treats the customer like a god, only they know in their heart. Some just pretend. Others genuinely mean it."
The client smiled as he handed over the signed contract.
"And you—you’re genuine." 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Laurent looked down at the two contracts with their staggering totals, her face lighting up with joy.
"Thank you. I hope we’ll have a great collaboration."
She didn’t say anything more than necessary. The size of the order alone was all the affirmation she needed. Since the client had shown such trust in her ability, she was determined not to let him down. She’d give her all to make sure every detail was handled flawlessly.
She had said it before—every client had their own way of working. Some liked to take things slow and easy, dragging their feet. Others were impatient and preferred to get everything done at once.
But regardless of what kind of client she dealt with, she always treated them with patience and care. She respected every individual’s work style. Perhaps that was why this client had said she was genuine.
After signing the deal and seeing the clients off, Laurent’s first instinct was to call Dave and share her success.
As the saying goes, "you lose some, you gain some." She had sacrificed her weekend to host this client—and in return, he had handed her not one, but two massive orders.
Dave was thrilled for her when he heard the news. His voice over the phone was filled with pride:
"Congratulations. I knew you weren’t ordinary."
Laurent blushed a little at his words. Not ordinary—did he have to be so good at complimenting people? She had expected something more cliché like you’re the best, but instead, he gave her something far more meaningful.
Okay, to be fair, she couldn’t think of a better compliment herself. But somehow, you’re not ordinary sounded perfect. It acknowledged not just her talent, but her character too.
She suddenly recalled how Dave once suggested she start her own company. Back then, she hadn’t believed in herself. He was the one who had encouraged her.
Now, looking at her own achievements—and hearing his quiet praise—she felt a new sense of confidence rising in her chest.
Since Dave was driving, they only chatted for a short while. "We’ll talk more when I get back," he said before they hung up.
After hanging up the phone, Dave glanced at his daughter in the backseat.
"Sweetheart, Mommy did two really amazing things last night and today," he said. "Daddy wants to buy her a gift to reward her. What do you think we should get her?"
The little girl tilted her head, thinking hard.
"A necklace?"
"A dress?"
"Earrings?"
She listed her suggestions one by one, making Dave chuckle.
Definitely a little girl,he thought. Always thinking about pretty things.
After a moment of brainstorming, she suddenly turned serious and asked:
"But Daddy, what amazing things did Mommy do?"
Dave was caught off guard.
He could definitely explain what she did today—but last night? Uh... not exactly kid-friendly content.
Still, he gave it a try.
"She... signed two big contracts. Isn’t that awesome?"
The little girl nodded innocently.
"Okay, so what was the other amazing thing she did?"
Dave froze. "...Uh..."
He paused, carefully choosing his words.
"She... made Daddy really happy."
That was apparently the wrong thing to say, because her eyes instantly lit up and she launched into full-on interrogation mode.
"How did she make you happy, Daddy?"
Dave had a massive headache.
In the end, he just told his daughter, "Mommy made Daddy very happy because she was super obedient and listened to Daddy. That’s why Daddy was so happy."
And then, like any opportunistic parent, he slipped in a lesson.
"So you see, sweetie, if you always listen to Daddy too, there might be rewards for you as well."
The little girl tilted her head, half understanding, half confused, but nodded anyway.
Dave closed his eyes for a moment, rubbing his temples. The words tasted empty on his tongue. He had promised himself he wouldn’t lie to her, but here he was, doing it again. It wasn’t the first time, and deep down, he knew it wouldn’t be the last.
