Chapter 31: Chapter 31- remarriage

Laurent was so angry that it almost made him laugh.

She had accidentally mentioned in front of her daughter that he would be with another woman, but if it hadn’t been for his phone call with Clark, would any of this have happened? Was she just overthinking things all day?

There she was, calmly holding her daughter and accusing him.

"Did you take Clark’s call on the way back? Was she crying on the other end of the line?"

Dave frowned at her question.

"How do you know that?"

His response indirectly confirmed that everything Laurent had said about their daughter was true.

On the way back, Dave had indeed answered Clark’s call. When Clark asked where he was, he told her he was at Tokyo Disneyland, and then she started crying.

Considering Clark’s mental state, he had said a few comforting words.

At that moment, his daughter was in his arms, curled up as soon as she got in the car. He thought she had fallen asleep...

Now it was clear that the little girl hadn’t actually fallen asleep.

Laurent let out a cold laugh.

"Dave, don’t think that just because she’s young, she doesn’t understand. She’s very sensitive. She heard everything in that phone call. She knows all about your other woman. You don’t need me to say anything more—she understands it all clearly."

Dave felt a lump in his throat at her words about "another woman" and instinctively glanced at the little girl in her arms. That wasn’t the case at all, and he didn’t want the girl to continue misunderstanding.

When Dave looked over, the little girl, with her large, glassy black eyes, was looking back at him. There were still teardrops clinging to her long lashes, and the sight made his heart ache.

However, before he could explain, the little girl, disappointed, turned her head back and rested it on Laurent’s shoulder. She was still sobbing, but not as hysterically as before.

"Mom, Emma’s hungry..."

Laurent felt a bitter pang in her heart and gently comforted her.

"Go wash your face, and Mommy will take you downstairs to eat."

Amid all the commotion, neither mother nor daughter had eaten yet.

After calming her daughter, Laurent intended to take her to the restroom, but Dave stopped them. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"Wait!"

He walked over, looked at his daughter, and softened his tone, explaining gently.

"Emma, Daddy and that lady are just friends. Daddy won’t have a baby with her."

He said this to his daughter, but his gaze was heavy as it fell on Laurent, who was holding their daughter.

Laurent sneered inwardly. Who couldn’t speak sweet words?

But as she thought about him lying to their daughter, she wondered if he could live with his conscience.

But the reaction from his daughter was completely different. She looked up at him with tear-filled eyes, about to cry.

"Is it true?"

"Yes, it’s true. When have I ever lied to you?"

Dave tried his best to explain to his daughter.

"See, when I said I’d take you to Disneyland, I really did bring you here."

In just a few sentences, the little girl, who had been angry with him, started to waver.

The more she believed him, the colder Laurent’s expression became.

Dave could no longer hold back. He didn’t want all the effort he had put into getting closer to his daughter over the past few days to be ruined now. With gritted teeth, he warned Laurent.

"Don’t smile so sarcastically. Why did you have to deliberately smear me in front of our daughter by saying there’s another woman in my life?"

He then stared at her fiercely.

"Can you guarantee that after the divorce, you won’t marry again? Can you guarantee that you won’t have children with another man?"

Dave’s question was filled with a biting edge, and his dark eyes locked onto her with icy intensity, as though he expected her to give him an answer right then and there.

Laurent found him unreasonable.

"Why should I answer such a trivial question?" she retorted.

Did her life after the divorce have anything to do with him? Why should she promise him anything about the future he was demanding?

After the divorce, she had no immediate plans to start a new relationship. She felt that, at her age, the most meaningful pursuit in her life should be to build a career for herself.

If, in the future, there came a man who didn’t mind her past marriage or the fact that she had a daughter, someone who would love her wholeheartedly and accept her as she was, then she would consider remarriage.

No woman was immune to the desire to be loved and cared for, and no woman wished to grow old alone.

After saying this, Laurent hugged her daughter and walked past Dave, heading to the restroom. She washed the little girl’s face, and, in a good mood, quickly styled her hair into a beautiful look. Only then did the two of them leave the restroom.

She had assumed Dave had left, but to her surprise, he was still outside. As soon as he saw them coming out, he walked over and immediately picked up their daughter.

"What do you want to eat? Daddy will take you."

After all, she was just a child. Her anger and resentment came quickly, but they also dissipated just as fast. Moreover, after Dave had explained himself earlier, the little girl no longer had the intense resistance she had felt before.

Dave took a gentler approach, walking over to her and gently asking in a soft voice. The little girl didn’t resist being held this time. She was in his arms, looking back at Laurent.

"Mom, what do you want to eat?"

As soon as Laurent heard that Dave was planning to eat with them, she immediately lost her appetite. However, she couldn’t avoid eating—she had low blood sugar, and skipping a meal would leave her dizzy and weak.

Glancing at her daughter, she forced a smile.

"Just pick what you want to eat. I’m fine with whatever."

Dave frowned.

"Say what you want to eat!"

Laurent really hated his superior attitude, constantly frowning with impatience. She had always held her tongue before, but now, she showed no hesitation in expressing her displeasure with his attitude.

"I did have something in mind, but now that you’re joining us, I’ve completely lost my appetite!"

"You—"

Dave was left speechless by her cutting remark. He had no idea what to say. Every time they spoke, it turned into an argument.

He didn’t want to argue, but it felt like every time she opened her mouth, it was like she’d swallowed dynamite, using her sharp tongue to leave him, a company leader feared in negotiations, utterly speechless—and fuming with anger.

After silencing him, Laurent was the first to leave the room. Dave followed behind, carrying their daughter, seething with frustration.

"What a terrible temper!"

But the little girl disagreed with him.

"Mom doesn’t have a bad temper! Mom is so kind to me."

Then, innocently, she asked Dave,

"Daddy, did you make Mom angry? Is that why she’s being so mean to you?"

He made her angry? If anyone should be angry, it was her at him!

Dave was about to explode from the combined frustration with both mother and daughter, but he couldn’t get angry at the little girl.
